For once, Sprinkles actually wasn't afraid of what would happen if they spoke about how he felt. The worst that could happen was torture, but as far as they were aware, Valli wouldn't go that far.

"Man, I'm willing to work with you on 'getting better.' Whether this place is real or not doesn't matter. For all I know, it could be a long nightmare, and I'll wake up soon enough. Or I'm dead and this is some weird afterlife. Or it's a weird game where, once I complete however many quests, I'll be released. That last one sounds as bogus as this place being real though."

"That's probably the best way to look at it. You can't know if something is a dream or not, so you have to behave as if it's not."

He tapped his pen twice, considering.

Well, that was a surprising question.

"I'm not sure. I wouldn't want to betray my Dad if there's still a chance I can go back to him. But I don't like being alone or treated like a kid either. That's a hard question."

"This is what I meant about the value of consent. People who 'own' someone in a kink setting want that - the knowledge that the person has, regardless of how the play is being done, chosen to be there. Things like loyalty. If you don't choose who to go with, there's no value in it."

"Then... I don't know? I won't be here forever. Does it even matter if it's fake in the end? Sure, I'll feel bad, but then I'll realize it's no big deal. No one actually got hurt. Then I'll move on. I just... I don't know what you want me to say? I'll do whatever you want, but I'm getting confused on what to do."

Why did things have to be so complicated here? There were too many options. What kind of food do you want to eat? Where do you want to go today? What kind of relationships do you want?

His ears lowered, shame appearing on his face. "Sorry... I'm trying, honestly. I don't..." He fidgeted with some hands a bit, going quiet while wondering what he should say next. "Sorry. I don't think I should be worried about danger. Even if I'm stabbed and it feels real, it's not. And if it's the afterlife, will I be taken to the after afterlife? Not saying I want to be stabbed, but I'm not too concerned about it. But, well, I already said I'd do whatever you want, so I'll treat this like real life then."

He didn't want him to just agree. He wanted him to understand.

"Think of it like a logic puzzle," Valli said. "If this is a dream, and you treat it like a dream, there's no issue. If it's a dream, and you treat it like reality, there's no issue. But then you reverse it. If it's real life, and you treat it like real life, no issue. But if it's real life, and you treat it like a dream... things could be bad."

Before, Sprinkles' expression could be described as shameful and embarrassed, but now it was all fear. "If it's real life, then I have to go through a lot of stuff to get back to Dad. And what if by then he doesn't want me anymore? Then what's even the point? And... why would creatures so powerful willingly stay here? Why would demons and such let humans have most of the control over Earth. And you're all just hoarding all this magic and technology to yourselves? None of it makes sense, or it makes everything seem so... wrong here."

They were afraid. They were being confronted with an absolutely horrifying possibility: That it all might be real. That they might never see their father again. That their life, as it existed, was over.

"Demons and other species have their own homes. It's entirely possible they could go out and try and conquer the world, but they'd be stopped by other people in the same situation who don't agree with them. It's a non-aggression pact."

As for the last bit...

"It goes back to what I said about consent. The island won't force people to accept things. It would cause a war. Some species--things like vampires or demons--would be discriminated against, maybe even hunted. So we maintain the secrecy, and operate as a refuge for them."
