Sprinkles snickered at being told he needed to learn how to file his taxes. It wasn't a stupid idea, but it felt so far away. It wasn't something he needed to consider, and he shouldn't need to consider it at all.

"Then I'll look it up online, or take classes on how to manage money. I bet that'd be helpful when I go back, or to whoever I plan to live with if I'm still here. I'm even looking for a job. And don't worry, I don't just rely on people. I'm plenty capable to do things myself."

"An education is only as good as the people teaching. The internet can be an excellent resource, but it can also lead you astray. The school has the benefit of having dozens of world class educators handy, each with their own specialties. Even if you aren't a fan of the remedial curriculum, it largely exists to help ensure you're up to date so that you can start taking more challenging content."

They seemed... almost well adjusted. It was only the casual mention of going home to their father that meant anything else. Denial. That was denial.

"Are things that much different for you here?"

"I'll give it a try then. Pretty sure once I'm considered eighteen, I can leave if I feel like it's not working out. But I gotta have a stable way to get money and a house and all that. Man, being an adult really is difficult. No wonder Dad needed help relaxing." Sprinkles rolled his head back and gave a quiet, drained sigh.

He pulled his head back up to look at Valli, then continued. "Things are real different. Too many people to talk to. Too much responsibility. I don't even have a lot of money to spend on stuff. Dad was rich, so I could get whatever I wanted. And I was great at what I did, and now there's all this... magic. I definitely don't belong here. The ears and tail and some other stuff are the only things separating me from humans."

Valli's skin crawled at how casually they said it. Needed help relaxing. He could guess what that entailed.

He let the surprise register on his face, his eyebrows raising.

"Oh? I was under the impression that the NEK0s had been... adjusted in a variety of ways. Enhanced learning, reduced physical needs, physical capabilities adjusted... things like that. The file doesn't exactly have details, but I was very generally briefed."

"That's what I meant by 'other stuff.' I didn't want to list each one out though, so thanks for doing my job." This time, he actually managed to give a genuine laugh to a genuine joke of his. Sprinkles just saw the surprise as Valli not realizing NEK0s were so similar to humans.

"But yeah, it's not obvious, so I can pass as human. I can say I have dyed hair. I already wear contacts to change my pupils, so I can say they change my eye colors too. And age, well, I aged fast, but I shouldn't age too much more to be noticeable. Also, human charms. I can use those."

Human charms. That might give him something that could edge his way to more shaky territory without asking outright.

"Not aging is a difficulty in itself. It means you have to move, and form no real bonds. You can't have friends in the narrow reality for more than a few years, because they'll begin to wonder."

Which was an issue he would never have had to face... until now.

"How do you feel about the idea of having to use a human charm to pass as a human?"

"For sure, but it's all good. I only had Dad for my entire life, and I'm doing just fine. He let me use the internet too. I made lots of friends there, and it's pretty normal online to stop contacting them and getting with a new group. And won't I have to do that here if I make friends, then leave?" His tone made it seem like it was a "checkmate" sort of question, but he really was curious about what the big difference would be.

Sparkles wanted to say that of course he'd be fine with a human charm. Why else would he mention it? But the thought gave a noticeable wrinkle to his nose. "I don't like having to hide like that. My cat features are what makes me special, but... if I need to use it, I will."

"There's a difference between making friends and leaving them because you made the decision to leave, and making friends and being forced to give them up to avoid compromising the veil. If you choose to return to the narrow reality, you'll be doing so on your own terms, and you'll be able to weigh the friendships you have here against your desire to continue living in Japan."

Valli paused for a moment, unsurprising by the I don't like it, but I'll deal.

"It's a common sentiment. To put it in simple terms, for many people it's like going back in the closet. Hiding who you are."

"I don't... need friends?" Sprinkles gave a tense, confused smile. How were they supposed to explain the problem? "I'm trying to say that Dad is the only one I really need. Once he's out, we can be together. Otherwise, there's not really a point, and I'm not very comfortable with replacing him."

On a lighter note, Valli gave Sprinkles the perfect segue to a joke. "And don't worry, I'm no stranger to the closet." And to add the cherry on top, he gave a wink.

The only person she needed was her father. Valli's expression was somewhere between intense and distressed, lost in thought even as they attempted a (lightly inappropriate) joke.

"Do you remember when I said that it was a bad idea to rely on someone to do everything for you? That applies to emotional and social needs as well. It isn't uncommon to have someone in your life who's more important. To many it would even be expected. But having just one person leads to unhealthy dynamics. Often it's idealized--put on a pedestal, really--but in truth, having just one person be responsible for all of your emotional needs is a huge amount of strain on both sides."
