Sam frowned, although he didn't realise he was doing it, as he listened to the heartbeat spike. This wasn't the type where it meant there was a life-threatening situation. This was the type where it meant the other person was scared.

He was used to having people scared of him. This was a given. He just didn't realise that some people could actually take his threats seriously and be scared of them, instead of just shrug that off as banter. This should've made him feel guilty. Instead, he considered his choices and gave the therapist a label in his mind - weak.

"Yeah, which is exactly my point. I'm not going to hurt you unless if you've done something." Sam said.

Valli had mostly regained his composure. He wasn't exactly calm, but he was better - good enough to pass if Samson hadn't been cheating and hearing his heart beat, ever so slightly too fast. But he was okay, and he could continue even if he wasn't terribly comfortable.

"People don't know that though," Valli pointed out. "And what happens if someone has done something? Then things escalate. It's important to know how to deescalate, to operate within the law to avoid getting in trouble."

Deescalation was one of the most important skills someone could have, in his opinion, and it was something he suspected Samson sorely lacked.

"De-escalate," Sam repeated aloud, considering how that word sounded inside his head. It sounded like the bullshit the people at the police place told him. He wasn't going to say that, though. It wouldn't end well. Operating within the law. Now that was something he could probably learn something in, as much as he hated to admit it. "Not breaking the law. Sounds like a plan."

The statement was neither affirmative or in disagreement. It was merely said to preserve the conversation, give Sam more time to think about what he was going to say in response.

The man's heartbeat had slowed down to something closer to normal, which was... well, Sam wasn't concerned, was he? But it was relieving. He hadn't hurt anybody yet. "Can we get to the point now?"

Valli had definitely noticed the non-responses. He was used to that, honestly, and a response that didn't tell him anything in particular was still better then silence. Some patients were like that, perfectly quiet and refusing to answer in any way. Those patients were the biggest pain.

"I'm not really sure what point you're expecting," Valli said politely. "I don't have an ulterior motive, or anything beyond what I've already told you. I was briefed about your situation, and that your therapy was mandatory. All I'm here to do is talk things through with you, and hopefully provide you with some techniques to help deal with your anger."
