A steady stream of smoke blew out from Aliasse's nostrils, mixing in with the fog that had began to form on this chilly night. The new guard was leaning against one of the trees, finding a little comfort in this unfamiliar land. It wasn't her first choice, but it was really the only option for her. "Escaped death only to be bound by debt," she mumbled bitterly. "What a way to go." She drew in a breath through her cigarette and exhaled the smoke from her lungs.
At the very least, no one knew who she was or what she did prior to ending up in the island. It was a fresh start as far as she was concerned, but admittedly, it could have gone smoother, like, not crashing a plane into the sea and waking up wearing nothing but bandages smoother. After thinking that scenario over, she guessed it was lucky that she was up on her feet only a week after being washed up on the shore and taken to the hospital, but damn did the bill nearly kill her when she woke up.
The doctor said her enhanced regeneration practically saved her--even though she had no idea she even had that power--and had it happened to a regular human, she'd be lying inside a coffin under an unmarked grave. She did raise the question of why her bill had too many digits if her own body did most of the work, but then she was told that her plane had injured quite a few people out at sea, and they weren't too happy about that. Of course she could have at least tried to convince the doctor otherwise, but her pride and guilt kicked in when she learned that one of the victims of her accident was a girl around the age of her younger sister. Admittedly, it wasn't the best news to wake up to.
Again, it was lucky that nobody knew that she hunted supernatural beings for a living since almost, if not all, of the people here on the island were supernatural beings. Would she be in a heap of trouble if they knew. She turned to the academy for work and nabbed a job as a security guard, since that was really the only thing that she could be useful for. But it did feel weird to be surrounded by the very creatures she was trained to capture or kill, and she has to keep them safe too, something her instincts as a hunter screamed at her for.
There was one saving grace though: most of the students were humanoid and looked pretty much human. Maybe if she just ignored the fact that some of them can fly, throw fireballs, and walk through walls, she could get through this without too many problems.
