Fire

'When I was little, adults used to say if you can control fire, it was a good thing.'

'In what ways?'

'I'm not sure; I think they were referring to cooking. I guess I'm a good cook.'

Before, whenever he was lonely, he talked to himself, with a collision of thoughts. Since Dari had revealed himself, he normally got replies.

A candle's wick flared up within seconds, and was subdued at the same time. Darren's gaze settled intently on the burnt wick, and with a determined mind, the candle was lit again, burning a deep golden-red color. He dabbed his finger on it, burning it, intensely hot for a second, and then leaving a burn mark.

'Dare! Are you insane? That was hot!' The addressed could hear his brother's mumbled cursing in the back of his head.

He nipped the flame out with his fingers, scorching it once more. 'Small, but powerful; I had to see your reaction, Dari. You're like an internal thermometer. What is it?' He stroked a finger down the hot wax ignoring the shoots of pain that Darius obviously felt.

'Ten times the norm, at the worst... I advise you to think to measure it someway other that burning yourself...'

Dare just shrugged and poked the wick again, setting it aflame. His eyes shifted towards the window, and blankly he looked through it, and began to think.

Steps moved thorugh the empty hallway, leading to different unused rooms. Though were they really unused? Students came all the time for various reason, so another wouldnt be suprised to see some student already there. Though the student that stopped at the doorway did seem suprised.

Amber eyes looked at the boy who stood there, right as he seemed to burn himself. A look of confusion was on her face, but she said nothing for a few minutes. Ashy blonde hair fell to almost the floor, a small braid held at one side of her head. Pale skin was hidden under a black dress with rips on the skirt and it hung off her shoulders. It covered everything it needed to easily though. Currently she stood barefoot except for the socks that went to her knees, having not felt like wearing shoes.

"Doesnt that hurt you?" She finally asked, voice soft and hesitant, as if unsure if she should have even spoken. After all this boy probably had some reason he done that and some nosy girl wa probably not welcome.

His head snapped to the girl in surprise, mostly at her presense, half at her question. He must really stop being surprised everywhere he went. There was a subtle silence as his mind rewinded bac to what she said.

"Of course it does," he replied matter-of-factly, waving a burned hand as a wave. He also did it strangely too naturally. "I do it anyway. It works when I try to perfect my power."

Besides, it was true; if he ever did feel pain from the fire, it would last for a mere millisecond, and then disappear because he could get rid of the heat. Darius knew that since ever, but he could strangely feel any heat when he did it. In short, Dare was almost like fire himself. (Even if it did hurt.)

Noticing his suprise a hand when up to the odd thing at her ear, running against the part where both colors divided. She didnt exactly notice when she did this and she didnt then. His anwser he could tell by the look on her face confused her.

"How is it perfecting your power if you hurt yourself in the process?" She asked, looking at the spot on his hand where it was burnt.

'So I can measure the temperature...' his brother answered bitterly in his head. However, he couldn't be heard, of course.

"I would know if I did it correctly, duh," he replied, as if it was the easiest thing the world. He rubbed his hands, wincing a bit from the pain that now coursed through it. "I can't just experiment with say, a piece of paper; it doesn't work that way."

As per usual, he was being blunt and confusing...

She looked down at the ground, noticing his wince. She didnt wish to say something to anger him, seeing as he did not sound very happy to have her questioning him.

"Hurting yourself will not help you later on." She mumbled, still not looking up at him. She looked at her hair, which was touching the ground since head was tilted downwards.

"I don't care about that; as long as I get my powers working correctly, I'm fine with anything," he answered, maybe a bit too harshly. That was all he ever thought of. Perfect his power, it was his goal; just perfect it to the best, he'd always wanted perfect control.

He rubbed a sort of ointment on his burns that Dari had recommended, saying a silent thanks. While he didn't care if he got hurt, the burns were really that bad.

She flinched slightly, hearing the sharpness of his voice. A small breeze blew against his hand for a moment before disapearing, as if it had never existed. Though the breeze had to have come from somewhere and no window was open, the girl didnt look like she had caused it.

"Would you be fine if you ended up dead?" She asked, voice almost softer than before as she looked up. Eyes met his and she managed to hold her gaze.

Dari stayed silent at this, comtemplating his premature birth, which his brother was oblivious to. It was an unnatural silence, almost as if he was uncomfortable.

"I'd do just enough not to die," he said, not short of an answer, although he had never thought of that before. "I made it up until now, didn't I? I can handle things fine enough."

'Dare, I think that's fine. I, I have a class later today.' Said person didn't reveal a look of surprise, but stood up abruptly, pushing in his rusty chair, a bit too roughly. Grasping the candle, he pocketed it, and made his way towards the door, unwillingly towards the girl as well, who was now staring at him. He didn't feel like staying in there either.

She Shook her head, his anwser was not a smart one. "You made it this far becuase you were trying to perfect your power, but what about when you try going farther with it than you have before? You cant always control how much is too much." She anwsered.

Usually she wouldnt have even considered it but her hand shot out, blocking his way past her, unless he pushed her out of the way.
