It was a rather slow Saturday afternoon and Ivana, the fire chief of one of Manta Carlos's largest fire stations, was just washing and polishing the outside of one of the smaller fire engines. The station, itself, had just had two call-outs that morning, and only one of them was even really fire-related. The first had been a small city bus-private vehicle smash-up, where they had been called out to help passengers out of the bus and prevent any accidental damage from leaking fuel tanks. The second call-out had been, unsurprisingly, at least for the station, a small kitchen fire at one of the local restaurants that had had problems in the past with proper kitchen ventilation.

All-in-all it had been a quiet and fairly enjoyable day, and Ivana was in a good mood.

More often than not one would not see Soosei dare come near the firefighters, and nigh impossible was to see her near their vehicle. Of course, that only applied when they were at work, or rather when the uniform comes on, outside work she would be sure to be friendly to them and fair in business too. But this day her stand was nowhere in the park... Because she has come to the station.

"Ivana-san, I... I brought you some of my homemade manju, chocolate-filled.", as she approached the fire chief, Soosei bowed and presented her with a pack of six cherry blossom-colored manju, still warm, of course that wasn't all... "And... I want your help. Can you lend me your ears?"

Ivana looked up inquisitively from the tire rim she was polishing when she heard someone call out her name.

"Oh, hey, Soosei," Ivana said, flashing the kitsune a welcoming smile as she dropped the damp cloth she had been using in a bucket at her feet.

"Sure. What's up? What can I help you with?"Ivana asked as she thanked Soosei for the freshly made chocolate manju. It was one of the station's favorites.

It was finally time for her to approach that problem, and find herself a place near Ivana she took a deep breath and explained. "I... Never really talk about this to anyone, it has always been difficult for me... But I want to overcome a past trauma, and maybe I should get more involved with the firefighters.", she went straight to the point, but perhaps... Soosei should explain what her trauma truly is? Or the history behind it?

Ivana handed the manju Soosei had made to one of her lieutenants that was coming on shift for the afternoon-evening and asked them to put it in the staffroom.

"Come, let's go and sit over there. Then you can tell me more about why you want to be more involved with the firefighters," Ivana suggested as the two of them went to sit on a bench outside the station.

With a nod, Soosei followed Ivana to the bench, fiddling with her tail after taking seat. "First things first.... The Hakujuu of Nara was me. Maybe you heard that, the white fire beast seen after a fire broke out there, people saying it was the arsonist who came back to have revenge... But in truth, it was just me scared by the sirens, and it so happened while I was trying to contain and put out in secret.", she opened up with the fire chief.

"Only time I ever hurt someone... Was when I was still little, out of revenge. That despicable man... He burned our den, I heard mom and my siblings crying for me, not knowing if I was safe or anything, in one night I lost my only family. And the last thing I heard when I lost it all... Was the fire truck sirens. Ever since, it reminds me of the horrible pain I felt, and fear of losing everything and everyone..."

"But... When I punished the arsonist, people started to believe I was sent by Inari, they believed I brought that man Divine Punishment, and that I blessed the poor family he could have burned alive, because they somehow got wealthy after the incident."
, briefly, a content sigh brought her sad expression to leave her and welcome a small smirk, soon followed by a serious one, as she looked at Ivana.

"Before then, I was just an youkai that nobody was aware of. And suddenly they named me Hakushoku and treated me as a minor deity, asking for luck, or protection, or that something that seemed impossible could happen. But how can I protect them if sirens makes me run in fear? I want to overcome that fear and be able to protect and save people. And you, Ivana-san, is someone I believe can help me."

Soosei's story was certainly full of sad and dramatic twists of fate and Ivana could only sit there for a moment trying to absorb everything that had happened to them.

"I'm sorry to hear that you had to suffer such loss," Ivana started. "What, or more like, how do you think I might be able to help you?" she asked Soosei curiously.

"It means a lot to me that you feel like that.", Soosei truly felt glad Ivana sympathized with the pain that the fox girl once felt, but as for the how to deal with her trauma... "As I currently am, I cannot operate with the firefighters yet. I'll need to be trained, exposed to the sound of the sirens multiple times until it no longer strikes fear in me. I want the Hakujuu side of me to die off for once and for all."

Ivana was actually quite surprised to hear that Soosei wanted to eventually become one of her firefighters.

"I see," Ivana said as she thought about a few reasonable ways for Soosei to overcome her fear of sirens.

"I don't want to traumatize you right away or anything by placing you somewhere you feel trapped," she explained. "And it should probably be a gradual, not forced exposure."

"How about for the first few days .. whenever you hear the sirens, you come to the fire station? That way you are heading towards the sirens and not running away from them?"

A few sincere nods in agreement to Ivana not wanting to enhance the trauma through forced exposure. Soosei herself knew that such thing could have been a gamble, and luck could not be in her favor. The other idea... "Will you be here when that happens? I... I am scared that I might wind up having a panic attack or something.", why should this fox deity have fear of panic attacks? Well, she has never hurt anyone as Hakujuu, and didn't want to take risks.
