Sage wondered if she said something wrong. Her eyebrows turned upward as Kal went silent, but he eventually spoke, seeming more or less fine.

"Thirty minutes? Oh, that's not so bad." Her shoulders loosened in tension.

"Hm, I think you're one of the few people I've been able to have a more or less normal conversation with. I'm, uh, still learning how to put contact information in this thing," she pulled out a phone from her back pocket, "but I wouldn't mind trading numbers?"

"I'm guessing you don't have the same kind of technology we have here. Here, let me show you," Kalvin said as he took the phone from Sage. He showed her where to go and what to do. As an example, he entered his number and name in it for her. "Don't worry too much about it. If you ever want to review the process, you can enter any random name or number in it for practice. Just don't call it or text it."

He returned the cell phone to Sage and pulled out his own. It was a smaller, simpler model with a keypad. After all, it was difficult to type on a touch screen with a missing hand. "Now, try to send a text to my number so I can register yours to my phone."

Sage shook her head, diverting her head down to hide the embarrassment reddening her cheeks. That didn't last long, thankfully. Kal's acceptance of her ignorance and willingness to teach her quickly rid her of her feelings of inferiority.

When Kal's tutorial was finished, Sage nodded and sent him a text. Very. Slowly. Sage had the flip-phone the school gave out to new students. Keyboards were hard enough. Keyboards made for fingers much smaller than hers were a kind of torture that made her question the good nature of the school.

"I am Sage," was what she finally managed to get out.

She smiled, proud of her work. "Thank you, but I think I'll stick to calls if I can."

In the wait for Sage's text, Kal wondered if she got lost in the instructions. Although, he did see her struggling with the keypad so he figured he only needed to wait a little longer. When his phone finally gave a quick vibrate, he pulled it out. "I got the text," he announced, opening it to see what she sent him. He looked at her and returned her smile.

"Yeah, no harm in that. Texting gets easier with practice though. Also, I suggest you text your friends if you have messages for them that can wait. Calling might disturb classes if they're in one," Kalvin advised. He saved the number under Sage's name before he pocketed his phone again. "Well, that's a pretty long break now. Should we continue jogging?"

"Ah, right... Classes." It wouldn't be the first time she did something inappropriate in class due to cultural differences. With so many rules, she felt outshined by her classmates that caught on easily.

Sage nodded at his suggestion and stood up. "I'll learn how to text like any other citizen here. Adapting is part of life. Now come, you're right, our break has gone on for long enough."

Without missing a beat, Sage began walking back to the track before starting up her jog.

Kalvin stretched up, reaching for the skies and back. After, he began jogging as well. He was looking to finish his last few laps. Actually, he'd lost count of how many he'd done as he was speaking with Sage. Last he remembered, he reached 5 laps give or take.

Continuing the jog wasn't so boring now. Even if he and Sage began to jog in silence, it somehow didn't feel as lonely.
