Sage fell quiet at the man's words. So he was lonely. She could understand that. From the sounds of it, he didn't have the luck that Sage did. The luck of coming here with a group of friends to feel safe around.

That only made the thought of telling him that she wanted to reject his friendship more painful. It wasn't that she was against him as a person. It was that making friends here would give her a bond difficult to shake off when it came time to leave.

"I'm happy to hear I bring you comfort, though I'm sorry to say that I'm considered 'supernatural.' Compared to other civilians here, I'm on the weaker end of the spectrum. All I have is alchemy, a magical hat, and the ability to instinctively understand plants. But I understand what you mean. Meeting people in similar situations as my own makes me feel less lonely."

The response was all a way to avoid addressing his last statement. In the best-case scenario, she could simply speak to him in a friendly manner without becoming too attached.

"I forgot to introduce myself: I'm Sage Florentin."

"I'm Kalvin Brenato. You can call me Kal, Sage. And I figured you'd be. You wouldn't be here if you weren't," Kal replied with a chuckle. He noticed the change of tone, now distant and a little colder. So she might want to be left alone after all. He understood that sentiment. Yet, her self-introduction wasn't warranted but she gave it anyway. He kept quiet for a time as they jogged, trying to read the situation. Would it be safe to assume she only gave her name to be polite? He certainly did.

"So you're kind of like Poison Ivy, but without the plant-controlling powers," Kal mumbled, halfway going mostly to himself. She mentioned she's from a different world. That meant she might not even know who Poison Ivy was. Also, he quickly realized Poison Ivy didn't do much alchemy. Kal tried to recall any alchemists he knew from pop culture who also understood plants. Nothing much came to mind except that one Goosebumps monster that was mostly plant than a scientist.

"What does your hat do?"
He couldn' help it. The strange things that he saw in here made him understand immediately what magical things people and items could do. He'd seen the language charms others wore. He reckoned he might have caught glimpse of magic rings once or twice from passersby, too. A magical hat was certainly new.

Sage figured that was more or less true. She knew some people were completely normal humans, but those were special cases. Family coming here to live with their supernatural relative was the most common story.

"My hat lets me lessen the damage my allies take in battle. And I'm sorry, I didn't hear your first sentence. Is Poison Ivy a person?" If she caught Kal's words right, then he spoke about this Poison Ivy more like a person and less like the plant.

"Uh, yeah. Actually, she's a villain in a comicbook series. She can control plants. She mostly uses it to hurt people though." Kal never thought he'd ever have to explain Poison Ivy to anyone beyond the age of 5. Then again, he never expected there to be other worlds other than earth.

However, hearing Sage talk about battle was interesting. "Do you often go to battle in your world?"

(Oh mah gawd. I forgot Kal had a missing left hand this whole time. Jeez Louis. Haha, he's still a fresh character. Forgive me.)

Sage shook her head, mildly puzzled by how she seemed like Poison Ivy aside from plant powers. "I can only sense plants, use them for alchemy, and summon mushrooms. My plant abilities sound different from her."

The question about if she often went into battle especially caught her off. Was that the tone of someone unfamiliar with battle? But what about his hand? She wanted to ask about that but realized it would be rude. "Yes, I did. I was on a quest with my friends, the Lionesses, to save the princess. Our journey got sidetracked when we were somehow sent here."

((That's okay! Great timing for me to mention it.))

"Yeah, they are different from yours. Don't worry about her though. She's just a work of fiction. You can read more about her if you get certain issues of Batman comic books." Kal said. Now that he thought about it, is there a comic book store in Manta Carlos? He wasn't really a comic fan anymore but they were his childhood. It'd be somewhat tragic if a comic book store didn't exist in Manta Carlos.

Upon hearing about her quest, Kal's brows rose. He looked at her, wondering if she was kidding. She didn't have the face of a woman who would joke around. He took some time to process what she said. Was it ironic that the most normal person he found actually came from a magical D&D dimension? "So, how did you get here? Who sent you here?"

All of that comic book talk went flying over Sage's head. From what she could figure out, comic books were a type of book, Batman was the name of that book, and "issues" was another term for "chapters." The blank look she had on could be taken for her regular tired expression or as a signifier for how little she understood. She hoped he would go with the former.

So she was happy that Kal moved on to that arguably darker topic of how she arrived here. At least she knew something about that. "I don't know," she stated. "My friends and I were sent here for no discernible reason. I don't think the person who sent us here was trying to harm us. Perhaps get us out of the way, but not harm. We were summoned around the school, and most of us were quickly brought in without trouble." There was no need to mention the issues she ran into that hospitalized her because of her own foolishness.

So the heroes were sent to a different dimension so the villain could do his evil bidding. It's even possible that one of their trusted mage allies was secretly working against them and had been the one to blindside them. This sounded like a typical trope to Kal. He didn't want to say anything about it to Sage though. He knew close to nothing about her situation after all. Plus, he was only assuming from the things he saw in popular media.

"Wow, you have it rough. At least you have a home to come back to. I came here because I didn't have a choice. I needed to disappear. As far as people at home know, I'm hiding somewhere in the east." It had been a hard decision. It meant leaving everything behind. But looking for a fresh start was all Kal knew to do. "Considering all the weird things that happen here, it doesn't seem to bad. I guess all it takes is a little getting used to."

Sage winced. She didn't enjoy the feeling she was getting from this. It was like Kal made it a competition on who had it rougher. It didn't matter if she had a home to come back to if she couldn't get back to it. Or worse, she got back to it and everything was damaged beyond repair, but that was simply pessimistic.

"That sounds tough. It's good you're trying to think of things from a more positive light." Funny, coming from her. She was known for worrying too much and not thinking optimistically enough. "I'm trying to get used to things here, but it's all too much. I appreciate my necessities being free in return for work, but it is work that makes no difference to anyone. It distracts me from leaving this dimension and treats me as if I'll be a long-time or permanent resident."

He may have superhuman endurance but Kal was getting tired. He could feel his lungs burning--and it wasn't the good kind. And there was a small prickly pain at his side already too. Later, it'll get worse. "Oh, really? By the way, I don't know about you but I'm getting tired. Let's take a break," he offered before he led them to a stop. He took his breath and walked around for a bit.

"What do you do for work?"
Kal couldn't help but ask curiously. In Sage's homeworld, it's possible that they don't have the frivolities this world has. It's possible that her world worked like in the Medieval times when most jobs were important jobs. Then again, almost every job in this world had importance too. There were some that he could name at the top of his mind that might not make sense to her as jobs. Modeling, professional athletes, and even being a professional e-Sports player. He reckoned those jobs were rare on this island so he wondered what she did for work. He wasn't judging her for saying what she said. He was only really curious about where she worked that she could say something like that. He might even be wrong to assume she thought wrong. "It can't be that bad."
