Nearing the end of the groggy lingering April and having been nearly two weeks since his last hospital visit, Chester stared dead eyed at the enormous scribbled whiteboard.

Oh hot sunny afternoons were the best of the worst!~ he hummed as his gaze lazily trailed to the window staring at the inviting warm lawns. How sleepy he was! He'd much prefer hands on courses, but even the best of those had lectures- and he just couldn't STAND lectures.

Even in one of his favorite classes, Horticulture 211, going over histories of Agricultural cultivation was just... Yawn! He could always do this stuff in his spare time! He much preferred to do the research himself than hear the endless droning of someone else's voice! He would much rather be getting his hands deep in the fresh soil... but lectures just lasted FOREVER!

Eyes growing ever more heavy, his head nodded several times before he melted into his textbook, burying his sleepy head in his arms.

Just... wake me when it's over....~ He thought to himself as he drifted off.

RRRRRIIIIIINGGGGG!!!

The sound breached his slumberous peace shattering it apart as he jumped at its sudden volume.

Scribbling down the prescribed homework, he slid all his things into his book bag with one graceful swoop as he got to his feet and shuffled out with the rest of class. Droning out their incessant buzz of chatter with a stoic expression.

Dressed to his usual polished degree, Chester fashioned shined black boots, black skinny jeans and a deep purple light cotton blouse over a white Tee. His repaired human shape trinket centering his chest and his book bag slung over his right shoulder, to spare the mild soreness lingering from his left flank.

Stomach gurgling as the hoards all migrated for lunch, he wondered blandly over what choices awaited him on today's varied menu.

Internally pacing back & fourth, scribbles and notations were jotted down throughout the lecture hall he was attending. Most of the contents that filled his sheet were the various applications being taught by his instructor, Julian of course would find out whether any of them held merit. He’d always been a practical applications kind of person, preferring trial and error, learning in the field as opposed to holding a theoretical knowledge. Often times it was Julian’s understanding that both worlds could learn a great deal from one another, perhaps apply an outside opinion to each other’s madness.

Other times growing plant’s was just straight forward, when someone tells you you’re not growing a tomato plant correctly… well obviously there are a few ways to make the process easier, but it’s the easiest thing to grow for a reason. Fidgeting with his pencil, Julian twirled it about in a circle on his extended index finger like a basketball wondering just how long he could continue to keep the motion going before… Julian looked to the clocked losing hold of his pencil as he began packing up his belongings before the aforementioned.

“RRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG”

And with that, the jockeys were off, racing for the lunch room when Julian simply pulled out his new phone (luckily he carried insurance and lost items weren’t too picky as to inquire how he had thrown it clear into the forbidden forest whilst running in fear for his life). Not being a fan of rushing the door, Julian waited patiently phone in hand ready to make his way to his favorite lunch time garden. It was only momentarily that he recognized one of the students that had lifted his head and swept away with the crowd that he mused a moment thinking aloud.

“No, it couldn’t be… could it?” With a sense of mischief and a grin, Julian leapt to his feet and bounded after the mess of a black haired mop that could only be Chester Mayfield. For a man with such broad shoulders as Julian, he found molding his way through the crowd easier than most as he was very comfortable moving in large groups.

“Pardon me, excuse me, lovely hat mum” he tipped an invisible cap towards a teacher he’d nearly goosed attempting to round her flank. Perfectly happy in either a concrete jungle or one made of grass, vines and overgrown brush, Julian was like any other uncoordinated young adult, pumping the breaks for etiquette’s sake whilst pressing on at full speed if only to reach his destination two seconds sooner. Weaving in and out of the crowd with apologies here and there, closing distance between his target, all the while wondering if he had even given Julian a second thought since their last encounter.

“Hope he’s not mad” he almost bit his lip thinking aloud, his tribal obligations holding him fast at the location in which the other’s had deemed worth inquiring at a clearing near the edge of the island that city hall had given them permission to settle down and cultivate the land. With paperwork filed and purchases underway, it was a mere matter of days before the group would be going full-speed production with all hands on deck in the mean time getting one thing or another ready for the big construction. After all, houses didn’t build themselves and setting up Hydro/Aquaponics farms were no small task even if they planned to start small and see how fair the profit was to be made at Market.

About to heave at the excitement of it all, Julian slowed his pace and trotted up to his quarry placing a hand on his shoulder in a light friendly manner (because he didn’t want to misjudge and man handle the poor boy by accident again… gods know how that turned out).

“Chester Charles Mayfield is that you?!” he asked in a coy manner, wondering if he’d be mad or amused that Julian had spied his middle name from his medical chart and waited this long to tell him. Before the boy could leap entirely down his throat or not, he did however hold up a rather large homemade lunch he’d prepared for himself and offered to share.

“What say we ditch the line’s and catch up, I made tempura salmon sushi rolls” he tempted, displaying the stack able trays of which there were four… obviously he had made way too much, but then he had thought to and succeeded in making new friends this way many times before.

Not bothering to weave through the endless sea of fellow students, Chester found he still got anywhere he wanted to go if he just went with the flow. Sullen as usual and still rather sleepy, he paused just long enough for a janitor to wheel his way past.

Then raising his hand to cover another long and lingering yawn, he was just about to continue on again when someone reached out scared the scales off him!

“YAAAH!” He shrieked.

It was such a light touch, but not being accustomed at all to being grabbed from behind, he nearly jumped out of his skin! A chill racing up his spine like a spooked cat.

“Chester Charles Mayfield is that you?!”

Twirling around to that voice, it seemed the blood raced to his face faster than he could possibly have recognized the guys voice. Ears and cheeks flushing madly like a blushing high school girl, Chester gasped for words.

“J-J-Julian! It’s You!” Though breathless, even he was surprised and the elation in his own usually snarky tone.

Yet before he could continue on, a large multi-tier Bento was shoved in his face.

“What say we ditch the line’s and catch up, I made tempura salmon sushi rolls”

Putting his hand on the giant lunchbox to lower it from his face, his eyes lit up,

“D-did you say Sushi?!” His octaves jumped a little higher, and it was ever so clear that the gloom that followed him like a plague evaporated into thin air.

Hand popping from the box to Julian’s wrist, he instantly pulled the bigger man behind him, his step seeming lighter and quicker as he easily maneuvered the crowds towards the exit. Bursting into the bright sunshine, he sped their way through the courtyard heading towards one of his favorite gardens.

Coming to an abrupt stop, he had to lean over to catch his breath before realizing that he was still holding Julian’s hand.

Blinking daftly before yanking his hand away, he shot his eyes to the ground scratching the back of his neck. His whole body feeling heated… probably from the run.

“S-sorry. I-I-I don’t know what came over me…” He apologized in a humiliated prattle. “I-I’m..I-I mean you…You.. uhhh…”

Shit. What am I? A bloody shoujo girl? Calm down!~ He thought in a muddle.

“J-J-Julian! It’s You!”

A wild smile boomed from behind his bento box as Julian confirmed the boy had been thinking of him or at least remembered his name. Giving the green light evidence to his claims being accurate, he indeed had four stacks of freshly rolled and fried Salmon Tempura sushi rolls. The ingredients he was almost too ashamed to say were bought at market instead of home grown, why his aquaponics farms Salmon were beyond compare due to their overwhelming freshness and the overall quality of life they lead whilst being cared for by druids.

Hand held tight to in pursuit of Chester as they navigated their way to freedom, Julian reminisced about meals long past and the grand scale upon which they’d been provided. Druid clans were famous for their year round methods for supplying herbs, fruits, vegetables, steer, fish and fowl. Their treatment of animals was so in like kind with their respect for nature that it showed in the low fat count and the tenderness of every cut of meat. Needless to say the babbling boy that came to stop before him was in store for a treat, but someday Julian looked forward to sharing something of higher quality standards with him… after all, why should he not spoil his friends a little?

“It’s okay” Julian smiled politely as Chester fumbled with his words, wiping his hand off gently from the cool sweat that had accumulated. Nudging his head in the direction of their specified dining area, Julian beckoned Chester to follow him as he figuratively planted his hands and head on the ground, begging for forgiveness.

“I’m just glad you’re not mad at me… I know I promised to swing by your place and help tend the garden but dude… after I was released from the hospital, I kind of got sideswiped by one of my clan members who explained that they had found a suitable settlement area and well… I’ve been buried in paperwork with city hall for the last week and some change. It’s just one of my families things, we know people and deal with the paperwork” to be perfectly honest he was going to say that his complexion made it a might easier to deal with officials, especially back in Canada were so many natives were subject to racial injustice from just about every direction… but he didn’t want to make lunch awkward.

“Sorry about that…” he rubbed the back of his head as they arrived at their destination, a little fern fenced off area were students gathered for lunch. It used to be the senior area from what Julian was made aware and lovely as it was they definitely deserved it but the principle had put a stop to all that rubbish when senior students started leaving the place a mess. Luckily the garden club had worked their magic over the fall semester to restore what they could and… my had they done a wonderful job. Pulling up a seat next to a small nook of a table in the corner of the area, Julian untied his boxes and set two in front of Chester. Each box contained two rolls of sushi, pre-sliced, with delicate cuts of fried salmon on top. Dumplings and fresh garden salad were arranged along the side with a sealed compartment for soy sauce and as Julian lifted one tray, pulled out of a secreted section in the side of the box a pair of chop sticks. Cracking his own pair in two, Julian tapped Chester’s box indicating he could find his own stored in his container. Each box had a set, so there was only a limit on those that could enjoy this meal for however many boxes there were.

“So, how's your tail?" he mused, a small smile never leaving his kinder, airy dispostion.

The pulsation in his chest calming over Julian’s cool unassuming personality, Chester found breathing easier, as the tension rolled from his shoulders. He didn’t know how the guy kept pulling it off, but it was hard to be somber when this big idiot came clambering in like a leaping grinning golden Labrador.

Refuting the apology, Chester shook his raven locks deciding that a kind white lie was preferable to the truth in the matter.

“No worries. I figured it was something like that. Plus I wasn’t in much mood for visitors afterwards anyways. It was nice to have some recovery time and the plants gave me plenty of things to do.”

Though truthfully he figured that Julian had just forgotten about him or played him off all together. But Chester was in no way going to admit that he had been thoroughly put out with rejection. Clearly it was an honest misunderstanding.

Taking a seat and setting his bag aside, he pulled out a thermos of cold tea and popped a few pills for his lunch time medications…

Perking up at the placement of two of the lunchboxes, his stomach gurgled in anticipation.

“I don’t know if you’re stalking me or if it’s just dumb luck! Butt you always seem to know my favorite things!” Chester blathered on as he knocked back his meds before his hands busied away collecting his chopsticks and shoving two rolls of the salmon sushi into his bulging cheeks at once.

“Though I am more for raw, that’s more a personal preference.” He added with a cheery air, before claiming another.

Chewing best he could for a solid minute or two more before a hard swallow, (because obviously he wasn’t rude enough to talk with his mouth full!) He half choked when Julian so casually brought up his... ughhh extra appendage.

“So, how's your tail?"

Gagging and giving his chest a good pound or two, before gasping for air and sloshing down another gulp of tea, it took a moment for him to recover, waving his hand back in forth in dismissal.

“Fine. Fine! *cough splutter* Fine. It’s aaah… my leg’s fine.” He stressed, patting his thigh in emphasis.

A weak fake smile masking his continuous discomfort with the subject, he shoved more food into his mouth, taking a dive for the dumplings.

Then waving his chopsticks around he’d suddenly made a realization. “Wait, How’d you know my middle name?! I’ve never told you that! You Are Stalking me!” He accused in attempts to sway the conversion. "Are you even a student? I thought you were a wandering nomad or something?"

So he likes it raw does he? Julian snickered at the thought, if only they were better friends Julian might have shared a taste of his twisted sense of humor with Chester. That little grasshopper on his shoulder however was saying “Don’t scare the poor boy” and that just made Julian internally chuckle at the thought of tainting another innocent soul like he had so many before.

“Dumb luck” he agreed whole heartedly, Julian wasn’t known for preplanning a lot of things except pranks… but now was no time for that inner monologue. Working on his dumplings first, Julian pulled out a bit of herb that magically warms food and sprinkled a bit over his food… shaking his head, he thought of what a fairy might look like doing the exact same thing… like he was going to bust out the “think happy thoughts my dumplings and you too shall fly like me”. It was a ridiculous notion but yet again, the kind of things he could think about but didn’t want to share with the world.

“Good, good” Julian replied flatly to hearing Chester was in a good sort of way with his previous injuries, having felt very responsible he had hoped to ask sooner but didn’t remember to take down the lads phone number… eyes suddenly wide with delight, he just remembered he’d called Anthony that night on the way to the hospital, so all he had to do is check his druid friends phone and then the real fun would begin.

Snickering when Chester asked Julian how he had known about Chester's middle name, he giggled like a school boy at being labeled a stalker when having just thought about how to obtain his phone number without asking… gods this was going to be a fun series of stories to tell someday. Still, bringing down his tone to a less jovial one, he answered truthfully.

“Your medical chart, it was at the foot of the bed. I didn’t want to look, but the nearer it got to the fourth day that you were unresponsive… I got worried”. he explained, it wasn’t his in his nature to be a snoop, playful as he could be Julian respected privacy.

“And I am a student, I actually was at the same Horticulture 211 class as you… this was my first day and I must’ve missed you because, heh, well somebody was sawing logs” teasing his smile returned and he thought to correct one minor thing Chester said.

“Nomadic druid, but yeah I never stay in once place very long. I still go to school like anyone else and do my best to benefit the tribe as a whole… but when I heard about this place, this Manta Carlos or whatever, I said goodbye to my folk’s n sister because they were kind tied down for the moment and I couldn’t wait another year… I mean I might’ve missed all this excitement, you know nearly dying and pretending that I haven’t noticed you checking me out” gods he was blunt.

“Not that I haven’t been doing the same, it’s not every day I run into a bi-curious dragon, especially a good looking one. But, if that’s not your bag, I’m cool with being friends too” winking, he tried not to tease the boy too harshly, but then maybe Chester would shut him down and maybe he wouldn’t… Julian wasn’t exactly one to beat around the bush, he liked being open about his own intentions.

Face turning redder by the second, he almost felt dizzy as Julian snickered with wicked teasing intent! Wondering between if he was just messing with him or if his parents had hired this crazy fool to follow him, he wasn’t sure if he should be angry or embarrassed. Though it seemed the answer to THAT was fast approaching! The way he was staring him down with those stupidly aggravating perfect green eyes… The inquiry into his name was pretty straight forward and obvious, yet he continued to eye him skeptically.

The chances of them going to the same school, believable. But taking the same class? So late in the semester? Not to mention a druid, wizard of nature so to speak, taking a Growing class?

His brow raised feeling the stories merit crumbling, his gaze zeroing in.

Why would someone who travels so often even bother with public schooling? Chester himself had always just done it online. Why not do the same? It was definitely more practical. But then again… Tilting his head ever so noticeably, his expression fell into one of criticizing judgement as Julian blathered on.

He doesn’t seem like he could live without a social life. ~ He thought. ~He’s too full of energy and life to sit in his room all day~ unlike a particular sickly rich kid.

Taking a pause to help himself to a dumpling before washing it back with more tea, the situation took a VERY unexpected turn.

“… I mean I might’ve missed all this excitement, you know nearly dying and pretending that I haven’t noticed you checking me out”

The liquids filling his mouth gurgled and made a backwards torrent, eyes bulging and heart leaping to his throat.

“Not that I haven’t been doing the same, it’s not every day I run into a bi-curious dragon, especially a good looking one. But, if that’s not your bag, I’m cool with being friends too”

SPLOOSH!!

Snort* Cough* Splutter* Wheeze*

WHAT?! Just…. WHAT?!

Tea spit everywhere as he leaped to his feet, knocking the chair to the ground in a clatter! His thermos spilling across the table and water dripping from his chin and stinging nose. Hand jumping to his aching burning face, he chortled a choked apology, swiped his bag and made a swiveled hasty exit!

Half tripping over a raised tile as he fled the scene.

~I’m going home! I’m going to my room! I am never ever ever EVER leaving! Oh gods. Oh Gods. Oh GODS! I am going to curl into a void and DIE!~ His heart was beating harder than ever, though it was currently strongly debatable if it was from humiliation, rage, or something else…

He closed his watering eyes as tight as he could,

“stupid, Stupid, STUPID!” He gritted between his teeth. But again whether he was addressing himself or Julian, he couldn’t say.

And I left the food~ Some stupid voice said in the back of his mind making his stomach twist further into its already existing knots.

~Who the fuck does he think he IS?~

Mid bite throughout the entirety of this… world shattering awkward moment that would normally have left any other persons mouth agape and tears streaming down their face. Julian simply continued chewing after Chester was long gone, his only thought aloud being.

“That was different” part of him wanted to laugh hysterically and proclaim “What the hell was that!”, another part wanted to cry and apologize profusely, “please don’t go, I take everything back, I’m so, so sorry, don’t shut me out”. Finally the part that took over his motor functions reached over to the other young man’s spilled tea thermos, put it right side up and lifting it, he drank what little remained.

“This is good tea” he said, those looking on perturbed by his odd sense of awkward calmness considering what a horrific display had just seen. Some had overheard the confession in passing, few were near enough to overhear it and relay the information to others and most drew the conclusion that Julian’s brain was in complete lock down denial of what just happened, one girl, bless her heart even said.

“Oh my god, that boy just got rejected… I don’t get it, he looks so nice” others commented on how nice the arranged meal looked, wondering if they had been on a date and finally they just all began looking away until Julian sat quietly by himself, slowly eating the remainder of his meal as the drippings from the table began wetting his pant legs.

What could be said? He thought, people got rejected all the time, some in less spectacular ways than Chester had just done. Maybe he hadn’t come out of the closet yet and Julian had just pressed the eject button way too early. The likelihood that he would profess his feelings were very low to begin with, Julian honestly didn’t know what he was expecting, the two were still very much strangers but in the course of four days… he really had gotten to know Chester a great deal. Knowing his full name, favorite way to prepare sushi, having been to his home, having been rescued from a bully, attended the same school/class, shared a lunch and exchanged flowers. Though it had all been rather rushed, perhaps that was it.

Finishing his meal, Julian stood his pants near completely soaked by this point as were his socks and went to the janitorial closet to retrieve a mop, bucket, broom and dustpan as he cleaned up the scene behind himself and then made off to his next class. Some part of his subconscious however lingered on the event, the part he tried increasingly to avoid, the one that told him he wasn’t good enough… perhaps Chester walked away with not but the palest apologies because Julian wasn’t worth his rejection.

Stopping in his tracks, Julian held a tightly closed hand over the middle of his chest as a sudden ache inside became widely apparent. It hurt, hurt like he’d just lost a friend, family member or favorite pet… not the kind of loss where they moved away, had a fight or were just upset with you, but like the part of them that lives in your heart died a little inside. As the hallways emptied and Julian found himself in another lecture hall… putting pen to paper as if the day had been as normal as any other, he tried writing something down only to see a wet spot on his page… that was weird he thought, had the tea spilled into his backpack or something… before a moment had passed a new wet spot appeared and then another leaving Julian confused, until he realized his eyes were overflowing with tears and he had no idea why.

“What… why, why is this… happ” trying desperately to wipe the tears away with his sleeves, he steadily realized he was failing as more and more just kept coming until his sleeves were wet with despair and he began packing up his bag. Standing, he slowly exited the room, clinging to the side of the wall as he descended the stairs to the classrooms exit, careful to keep his eyes averted and out of sight. After he left the room, he just went started walking and didn’t stop. He walked out of the building, off of the campus, past city limits. A flitter of his subconscious wondered where he was going, but he didn’t know and at the very moment he didn’t care either.

Despite his strong desire to crawl under the nearest rock and die of complete humiliation, the ever innocent shut-in knew that he couldn’t skip anymore classes. Even he kept to at least some loose moral academic code and couldn’t stray far or risk too much of a grade drop. So instead he spent the remainder of the lunch hour splashing cool water on his face, and hiding in one of the men’s bathroom stalls.

Going over his mantra’s and exercising all of his mental practices to retain a level of regularity, every single time he thought he had achieved it, Julian’s words echoed in his head and his face filled up his mind.

It was a very difficult and trying struggle to get through his day. It didn’t help any when he suddenly noticed that in one or two of his classes there were some darting eyes and accusatory whispers. Crouching lower and lower as classes dragged on he snapped two pencils and one fountain pen, knocked over a potted plant, tripped over his own foot, and gave the wrong assignment to the wrong teacher.

When the school day came to a close, he kept his head down and gripped his bag as he shuffled through the halls eager to get home. But as hard as he tried to ignore it, the gossip flooded his ears.

Is that the guy?
No couldn’t be. I think he was cuter.
If it is him, he must be a jerk, he is so sarcastic.
What about that other guy?
That guy who got rejected?
I think I heard someone say he was crying!
I heard that an emo kid dumped his lunch on him!

What? No way!

Nails gripping into his shaking palm around his bag strap, he picked up the pace until he was out of the school. Words still whirling around his head.

FIN.
