When was the last time Cam had been this excited about an outing that wasn't a date? Actually not that long, maybe about half a year ago. Wait, was this a date? Cam kind of wanted it to be a date, but at the same time didn't. Kal probably didn't mean it as a date. Or did he? Maybe he thought Cam would think it as a date and be weirded out. Or maybe Kal wanted Cam to think it was more than just an outing and actually kind of liked him. Or maybe this was all just a huge cosmic conspiracy and Cam was going crazy.
It was all kind of a mess inside his head as Cam made his way towards the beach he and Kal had agreed to meet on. Cam was wearing a dark blue hoodie, black sports sweatpants and sneakers. Under all that he was wearing the wet suit, that was peeking from under the hoodie. It was black with some bright blue and white highlights. Cam was also carrying a large shoulder bag, that contained a thermos filled with warm cocoa, water bottle, small container with Cam's surprise and a change of clothes.
Cam hadn't bothered with any makeup, naturally, and his hair was just on a plain ponytail.

Cam kinda wanted to bite his nails, as his mind came up with countless other theories and fantasies and other kinds of thoughts. But partly because of what Ernesto and Cam had talked about he was also kinda scared and unsure. It was clearer than day for Cam, that he had a crush on Kal. Cam was flirty by nature, Kal had definitely noticed that, so hiding this crush would probably be simple enough. Cam wasn't scared of Kal finding out, first and foremost at least. He was scared he'd grow to like Kal so much he wouldn't be able to hide his feelings. Cam was prone to being impulsive, who knew when he'd just ignore all the circumstances and hug or kiss Kal, or worse. That had happened before with others, though it usually didn't have bad consequences. But Cam was worried about his own readiness to be in a relationship again. His last one had been...traumatizing was a strong word but pretty accurate. The guy had turned Cam into a blue fucking fox and his life upside down. That had...left a mark, to say the least. A mark of anger, and uncertainty.
Cam sighed and got the beach in his sights before long. Guess he'd just have to wait and see. But for now he just wanted to enjoy surfing with his best friend.

As Cam saw the beach his worried were pushed to the background by excitement, and he started jogging. Cam jogged the rest of the short way to the short stairs that led down to the beach, and Cam stopped on top of them and scanned the beach. There were a decent amount of people, but it was part cloudy and the wind from the sea was chilly so many had just stayed home.
Cam was looking for one certain person, and as he would spot Kal his face would light up. Cam would wave widely, and make his way to Kal with a grin on his face.
"Hello, sir. Do you come here often?"

Kal had barely slept the night before. In fact the whole day he had barely been able to concentrate. He was full of excitement and anticipation and nerves. Kal had arranged this afternoon first and foremost because it would be a great time, but he had to admit he had an ulterior motive. After they had their fun time surfing he was going to have to tell Cam how he felt about him. It was dishonest to keep it a secret any further. After they had fun though. No need to ruin the opportunity for a good day.

Kal had brought two surfboards, a couple blankets, and a small cooler with some sandwiches in it. He hoped Cam had brought water for himself if he didn't like warm water to drink- Kal was fine with producing his own drinking water. One of the blankets was, oddly enough, draped around a surfboard stuck in the sand. The other board- one with a curling wave design on it sat also stuck in the ground but bare of any covering. The man was in his own wetsuit, mostly black except for dark blue sections and one larger bright orange symbol from the wetsuit brand's logo on the chest and back. He had already stripped off his outer clothes, which were technically also his only spare change of clothes too, and was in the process of stretching when he noticed Cam's wave. With a big grin he waved back and gestured for Cam to join him by their little temporary campsite on the beach.

He stood up and put one hand on the blanket covering his spare surfboard. Man was Cam going to be surprised. Skye had helped Kal sand down the board and wrap a new vinyl pattern on the board before sealing it over again and waxing it perfectly. Kal casually pulled on the blanket as he turned towards Cam, acting like it was nothing.

"Only when the clouds hide the sun from me and the breeze threatens to blow my things away," he chuckled. It actually wasn't that bad, just maybe not the perfect conditions he had envisioned when he imagined how the day would go. "But I think, my good sir, that we'll sirtainly have a good time sirfing." And with that barrage of terrible puns the masterpiece was revealed. The board that Kal had brought for Cam was wrapped in the image of a giant green pickle. A throwback to the ridiculous bandaid idea Kal had had before their coffee outing. Putting his face on the board would have been going way too far.

Kal had dug out the sand a little so he could lay a blanket and their things down, shielded just a little bit from being blown in the breeze. Nothing too fancy though.

Kal had put up a nice small spot for them, as Cam observed when he got close. He slipped his own bag off his shoulder while still smiling at Kal. He looked good in his wet suit, but at this point Cam would've thought the guy looked good even if he was wearing a trash bag.
"Ah, yes, those sound like the perfect beach conditions."
Cam answered, and snickered a bit. Though he outright laughed when Kal struck with a barrage of puns right afterwards. But when Kal all of a sudden pulled off a blanket that had been covering the other board Cam went silent. The board had a giant pickle on it, a callback from their first outing together. For a second Cam just stared at the board with a blank expression. Before bursting out laughing and stepping over to the board, touching his hand to the giant pickle. Cam turned to Kal and was still cackling a bit as he spoke.
"Didn't have the guts to put your own face on it?"

After Cam finished giggling at the pickle board he unzipped his hoodie, revealing the wet suit underneath. Cam folded the hoodie on top of the blanket on the sand, and did the same to his pants Cam had also slipped off. And after kicking off his sneakers Cam was just in his wet suit like Kal, ready to surf. He smiled at Kal and touched his hand to his pickle board.
"Want to hit the waves, pickle boy?"

Kal was very pleased with the reaction to his hard work. Once again it had been far more effort than was reasonable for a joke like that be he didn't feel like it was wasted at all. "I didn't want to scare away all the waves for you," he joked as he started getting his board out of the sand and ready to go. Also, he thought, there would have been far too many less than appropriate jokes floating through his mind had he went through with that particular board style.

Kal tried to avoid glancing too much at Cam as he shed his extra layers of clothing. Tried. He snapped himself out of it after a moment by dropping his board so he had to busy himself with picking it up. Real smooth, Kal. He was glad when Cam was ready to hit the waves though.

"Ready whenever you are, but I think you're the one who got pickled, Cucumber Cam," Kal called out as he ran, cackling, towards the water. He very clearly knew what he was doing as he paddled with strong, practiced strokes. he'd just get out past the breaks and wait for Cam to join him out there. The water was a little chilly but saltwater felt like home to him and he reveled in the salt spray in the breeze.

"Scare away the waves? Rather call them over, since you have some psychic connection to saltwater. You just wanted to hog all the good waves."
Cam threw back and stuck out his tongue at Kal, grinning right after. He had also thought of other more flirty answers to that, but Cam had decided to try and hold back the flirtyness today. It wasn't a date, it was just an outing between two friends. And he totally wasn't disappointed Kal hadn't put his own face on the board.

"Cucumber Cam? You went for the obvious one."
Cam called back and cackled as he ran after Kal, the pickle board under his arm. Cam's movements showed no hesitation as he set the board against his chest and dove into the water. His strokes lacked the strength Kal had put had the same amount of experience and soon enough Cam had caught up to Kal beyond the breaks. Cam felt the coldness of the water but it was easy to ignore as he smiled widely at Kal.

Kal smiled back at Cam as they both sat on their boards waiting for the right waves. The waves weren't terrible but many of them were not quite good enough to give a good ride so they sat and watched for a bit.

Since Kal had made it out there first the unwritten rules dictated he got the first choice of waves. He wanted to give that up to Cam but they were both going to have plenty of waves to ride on so he just held his tongue. Before too much longer the telltale signs of a solid wave crept up and Kal grinned at Cam before paddling along with it.

As the wave rose up and began to curl at the top Kal pushed himself up to his feet as he dropped into the wave. Smoothly gliding across the front edge he switched back and forth a few times before the wave began to collapse into whitewater too much and he finished by doing a sort of roundhouse turn, cutting back away from where it was breaking and then rode it out before looking back to see how Cam was faring. In fact he hopped off his board and waited there in the surf to watch Cam.

Cam kept his eyes on the waves, and like Kal was looking for a good one to come their way. Cam was going to let Kal go first, as he was very well aware of the unwritten rules. Though when Cam had first started surfing he had gone against most of them and broken good manners multiple times before learning.
Eventually a good wave came along, and Cam grinned back at Kal and waved as he left to ride it.

In all honesty Cam wanted to stay and see how Kal surfed, he was sure the guy looked amazing on board, but he saw another good wave coming and didn't want to miss his chance. Cam paddled along with it like Kal had done before, and he could see this was going to be an excellent wave. And as it started to curl Cam slid down to it and pushed himself up. He was a bit rusty, and wobbled a bit before gaining balance and getting the hang of it. Cam crouched down a bit and kept a hold of the board's edge as he surfed on the wave, on his face the biggest smile. Cam had missed this sensation of gliding on water and feeling the water on his face and hair.

The wave started to collapse behind him, and Cam attempted to similarly turn away from the wave. But Cam was pretty rusty, and lost his balance as he leaned on the side. Cam, with a short surprised yelp, fell off his board and into the water. Like he had been taught he didn't go against the wave that followed after him and instead let it wash over him. And when it passed Cam swam to the surface and gasped for breath when he reached it.

When Kal hopped off his board to look back at Cam he was startled to hear a yelp come from the man as he lost his balance. Despite Kal's seemingly innate connection to the water, there was nothing he could do to keep Cam from falling. Even if he had actually had time to react, and he really didn't.

Kal ripped off the leash from his ankle so he'd be ready to dive in after Cam if he didn't surface and began paddling his way back out in the direction Cam had been when he went under. His heart pounded even though he told himself that Cam knew what to do. The man had said he was an expert at surfing so surely he'd be fine right? The thoughts rang hollow- he wouldn't be able to relax until he saw Cam's beautiful head burst back up above the waterline.

Fortunately Cam did resurface and Kal was so relieved. "Hey Cam, you alright? You really ate it on that one," he called out as he paddled over. His tone was one of genuine concern. Hell, if Cam looked like he was struggling Kal had no reservations about helping push him up onto one of their boards or even just physically helping him stay afloat while he caught his bearings. Kal was extremely good at swimming after all.

He probably was going to have to cool it with the whole rescue reflex thing. Cam would surely get tired of Kal rushing in like he needed to be safe after every little spill. And he wouldn't make it a habit- Cam was strong enough to take care of himself too. But he hadn't had time to think about that. He had just acted on instinct.

As soon as he resurfaced Cam could hear Kal's voice, and that helped calm his pounding heart. Knowing that he was close and watching out for him. Cam tread the water and turned towards where he heard Kal, swiping hair away from his face. The wave had loosened his ponytail.
"Yup, I messed up. I thought I had that turn but the wave beat me."
Cam answered, and was smiling happily and his tone was light and cheerful. Cam could hear the concern in Kal's voice and it made him happy, that the guy was worried for him. Cam's smile became more gentle and he swam a bit closer, patting Kal's shoulder.
"I'm completely okay, this isn't my first and won't be the last time I fall off my board. Wait, where is my board?"
Cam looked around. The strap around his ankle had come off during the spinning the wave had given him. Thankfully Cam saw the board floating near the shore, and he let out a sigh of relief.
"It would've been just perfect if I had lost your board on top of falling off of it like an idiot."
Cam snickered, and started paddling towards the board before it floated even further away. Cam noticed that the sprain in his ankle, that had just calmed down few days earlier, was aching a bit but he ignored it.

As Kal confirmed to himself that Cam was indeed safe and allowed himself to start calming down a stray thought struck him. How even when Cam was treading water after being tossed around by a wave, his hair somewhat messed up and wild, he still looked amazing. The messy hair only made the grin that much more attractive. And that was all before Cam patted him on the shoulder. Every time the two of them had contact it was like a spark of excitement.

"I know, falling off kind of comes with the territory. What can I say, i'd be a pretty poor knight if I just left the damsel in distress to sink without their glorious pickley steed?" He snickered and then realized that Cam had been distracted as he looked around for the missing surfboard. Honestly Kaliyan had pretty much ignored the fact that the board was missing in his rush to check on Cam. He'd happily trade the loss of a surfboard for Cam's safety any day.

"Ah, we'd figure something out even if you did manage to lose it. On your first wave," he laughed as he finished the last bit. With Cam safe it was ok to joke around and that just felt right. Kal did two things as Cam swam back to grab the board. First he splashed water on his face to snap himself out of the mental image he had of pulling Cam into an embrace right there in the water. And then second he turned his board back out so he could paddle through the waves and not be tumbled around in the surf.
