Inside, she was grateful that Michi didn't press a little further. However, she still couldn't quite keep the weight and hesitation off her voice. "Yeah... it'll be fine."

She turned away briefly, hoping that Michi didn't notice her pained look. Facing away, she tried to pull herself back in shape. She had to be the good mentor right now.

She forced herself to smile again, and sat down. "Yeah, we can proceed as normal. We'll try the basic runes a little more until you can consistently invoke them and make them take effect, then I'll start explaining how more complex spells work."

Contrary to what Adelaida would have thought, Michi read the hesitation in Adelaida's voice differently. She managed to catch a hint of it as the voices subsided, but she thought it might be because Adelaida figured teaching her might be harder with this new discovery. Still, Michi decided not to press further, turning her attention to the other runes she was given. She was heavily weighing her options when Adelaida turned back to her again. Two other things she had left to try was the one marked 'breeze' and the other, fire, both of which rather self explanatory. Michi tentatively looked at the water rune she still held which luckily hadn't self destructed like the light rune from earlier. After a moment's deliberation, she swapped it out with the breeze rune. Until she can size things down, she couldn't exactly trust herself to play with fire. Michi glanced at her mentor once, as if to check with her before proceeding to invoke the spell. Careful, she reminded herself, as she stared into it. A thought crossed her mind, wondering if her impatience was getting in the way of learning proper control. Taking a deep breath, Michi began another attempt, this time making sure not to let too many strings of light touch the rune. It was taking longer, that was sure, but Michi tried to remember she was supposed to be painting a line, not pouring into a stencil.

Adelaida waited. The pause, the silence was helping her push the guilt away. Maybe when Michi was more advanced in the arts, Adelaida would reveal what was going on with her soul and then they could work one of the many different workarounds to harness the corruption and master it.

She began working on replicating the diagnostic light test that she'd whipped up, thinking that she would regularly have to check on Michi's prognosis.

"Hey, when we're done with these basic spells, I'll have you repeat the diagnostic spell, just so I can take a picture. I'm thinking we'll have you redo it regularly, so I can keep track of your status, see if it's... growing or not."

Hopefully, the light wouldn't change all that much. But Adelaida had a sneaking suspicion that it would only go farther and darker from white, and it would be harder and harder to lie about what it meant in that case.

Michi was deliberately more careful with the rune that it was definitely taking more time than her earlier attempts. She was intricately weaving through the rune, making sure there wasn't any stray lines that would seep into it without her noticing. Her focus was on the rune, while the voices slowly tuned back into quiet murmurs. She had been too focused in fact, that Adelaida's words would have easily gone over her head. If she was any more paying attention to her mentor, she would have easily questioned what she meant by 'growing', but that was not the case. Michi could only offer a hum of agreement as she finished tracing the rune. Michi could feel light breeze flowing in before it dies down fairly quickly, and Michi has to trace the rune over and over again, trying to keep in mind to be careful. It took maybe four or five more attempts before she could hold the breeze in a steadier manner, and holding it long enough to seem more like a decent spell work. A feeling of achievement washed over her, for once she didn't over do it, and she looked at her mentor. "Does that get a passing mark?" she asked, trying to bite down a smile.

Adelaida was positively beaming. Michi was learning much, much faster than expected - she was getting close to her own pace in the past, but with much more potential. "Very good! You'll be my best creation yet, and I've built actual humans."

Her excitement and pride had taken over the guilt, and pushed away any thoughts of concern. Now, more than ever, she just wanted to see what heights Michi could achieve under her guidance. Maybe when Adelaida's own capabilities had come back, they could be rivals in magic. She'd always wanted to have a peer of her own at some point.

"So how's it feel to be magical? Feels great, right?"

Michi was rewarded by a broad grin from her mentor, and because of that she couldn't nearly keep her own stifled smile from showing too much. If she wasn't as any excited as she was right now, she'd have questioned the creation part. She had a shot at this, if Adelaida's smile meant anything, and the idea itself relieved her just the same as it excited her. Then Adelaida turned a question to Michi. So how's it feel to be magical? Michi seemed to stop for a moment, letting the question bounce around in her mind. Magical. It was a word she'd never thought to call herself despite her 'gifts'. She always thought it more a curse than anything. Michi looked at her hands, still holding the rune, the lines of colors though a bit faint still visible in her sights. "It's..." she looked at Adelaida, wonder in her eyes. Just moments earlier, she was too busy trying to invoke the runes, too focused on pouring magic in to even notice anything. Now that she was given a moment to savor the feeling, she could feel a slight tingle as the flow of magic calms down from being used.. "It feels refreshing. Invigorating, even!"

A good answer. Everyone she knew who made it far into their explorations of the arts had been at least partially driven by this pleasant thirst, and Michi pointing out the good feeling of invoking magic was more promise. More than anything at the moment, she wanted to make sure that such potential was not lost to the world.

"Feels good, right? And when you get to the point of not needing a hundred percent of your brain to cast spells, you start to actually enjoy it more because you're free to feel the sensations."

She took out another blank paper and put it on an unused desk. "We'll have you try and use the fire rune without burning anything other than the rune itself first, and then we'll take a quick break so you have time to process things before we proceed to 'words'."

Michi moved her hands around, trying to get a physical sensation as she watched the magic flow around her. At one point, she wouldn't have to pay too much attention just trying to make this flow to her will? There was a curiosity in her that was piqued, overpowering the mild feeling of discomfort in her chest. It'll pass, she thought. It wasn't as if that didn't happen everyday. Her attention was brought back to Adelaida when she noticed movement from the corner of her eyes, and it was Adelaida laying a blank paper on the other desk as she continued to explain, Michi nodding along. Her expression somewhat perked up at the promise of a possibly more complex spell so without hesitating she took hold of the fire rune. For a moment, hesitation caught her and she looked at the rune with trepidation. "Without burning anything huh," she said with a wry smile. Hopefully that would be the case. Don't get too excited now, she told herself. The voices seemed to go along with her, returning to their soft whispers as she started the process again. Michi tried to do the same trick she had done with the breeze rune. Carefully, she began weaving through the rune with the lines of color, treating them like threads following a pattern. She held that for a second or two, making sure no more of the lines touched the rune until the paper finally ignited into flames, perhaps too large, but other than a scorch on the desk she was on, it didn't do too much damage. Michi held her hands to herself, for a moment fear of burning herself froze her, until she watched the flames die down into nothing. A moment after she calmed herself, she turned to her mentor. "Does that count?"

"Alright, slow it down missy," Adelaida said jokingly, though her face showed clearly that she was very pleased with the results of things. "At this rate I'll be obsolete by the end of the month. But damn if it won't be the most satisfying lay-off I'll have in my life."

She thumbed through some of the books, trying to think of an appropriate sequence for Michi's lessons moving forward. A lot of it would be self-study and memory, she thought, because once she had properly taught the syntax and the rules, everything else relied on how Michi would be able to process and replicate the runes.

But for now, she had to pace the lessons. Rushing it unnecessarily, even where Michi's immense talent may allow her to succeed, could caus problems down the line.

"For now, congratulations on figuring out spellcasting. Not the fastest or the most precise, but my standards are just extremely high, and you're managing to keep up quite well, actually. You can keep practicing if you want, but for now, let's sit down, take a few moments, and then proceed to syntax."

Michi let out an awkward laugh at Adelaida's comment. While it sounded a compliment, there was something at the back of her mind nagging at her that it wasn't good enough. She should do it over, she thought, but Michi decided to worry about later. Maybe she could sneak practice after this session and ask Adelaida for the runes. While Adelaida decided she passed, she knew she needed a little more control, a little more precision. She was antsy knowing she didn't make her first attempts count. Michi pressed her hands together, as if to ease the tingles she was feeling at her palms. "Well, then I'm honored to have at least met the base of it then," Michi said, a slight jest in her tone. Not good enough though, Michi wanted to be a little bit above that base but she kept quiet about it. Michi sat back down, leading back on the chair as Adelaida continued to speak. "About that... I might need to review the first runes I messed up I guess, but I don't mind proceeding."
