Noticing him turn just enough for her to miss him, she instinctively moved her arm and leg to protect her vulnerable side, while attempting to twist herself so she'd continue facing Zack. With her muscles tensed the kick she received was a solid hit, but most of the damage that would have been caused was mitigated at the cost of a little pain.
The next thing she knew, it was Zack on the offensive, running towards her and then slide. She wasn't sure how strong he was yet so she decided to try and maneuver herself instead of attempting to block with her own foot, which could have ended with her snapping either her tibia, fibula, or both, with the added pain of a broken ankle.
She wanted to stay on the ground as much as possible, and so did a tiny hop to the side instead of attempting to jump over him. As soon as she touched the ground and got her footing, she kicked off the ground to hop back a little farther before walking backwards with a grin on her face. Feeling her blood pumping so fast in a long time got her excited. She didn't move to attack yet, and decided to play it safe for a few more moments.
