Havoc didn't respond right away as most people would have. Instead he sat there, his mind and focus obviously elsewhere. Nix gave good advice - a good assessment of what he was like and how other people saw him - but there was no quick and easy answer. Manta Carlos didn't have a quick and easy option.

"The scouts," he finally said after almost two minutes of no doubt awkward silence. "Have to have something to deal with more extreme cases, wouldn't they? You hear stories of supernaturals being held captive. Someone has to deal with that, and you can't send mundane special forces in to deal with dragons and supernatural cults. So they must have something akin to special forces. Like a military analog, only focused on hostage retrieval."

Which was more or less exactly what he wanted.

"The only question is if I'm forced to do standard scouting like I would be with the police." Which would be an issue. "Scouts would like a record with the student council, correct?" Without even having to ask, Havoc was entirely sure Nix had a better idea of how job searching and references worked than he did.

There was a slight pause, and for a moment there, Nix thought that he might've actually gotten through to the guy. Either that or offended him. Not likely for either, but eh. It was what he thought. Hopefully he gave good advice. Wasn't his advice fine?
Still silence.
His mind traveled back to something he thought he'd forgotten about - the year Lili moved out, he'd had almost the same conversation as this one. Except, you know, it was his sister - so.. there was more makeup and emotions and stuff. He even remembered what he'd been doing at the time. Which, honestly, was a good thing for him. Or something bad...
He remembered that time, They'd gotten into a fight over where Lili was going, and if she'd move out of the house... was that what Havoc was doing? He didn't have nearly as much reason to keep the guy around, but...
"The scouts," Havoc said, finally breaking the silence and the parade of thoughts in Nix's mind.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Uh. They'd have to have something akin to a SWAT team for the scouts, right? To deal with the people who're uh... locked up or something. Something they need force for, right? That'd be right up your al - " Unsurprisingly, he was interrupted again by Havoc, who brought up a good point. References.... On resumes.
"Yeah, I guess so. I mean, on resumes and stuff, employers kinda like it when you have leadership qualities, or things that you did before. Qualifications, work history, all that good stuff, it shows 'em what you're made of, basically. Student Council would be a plus for leadership, and your military thing would also be a huge help in the capabilities department... Yeah. Actually, dude, this is kinda perfect for you. All you'd have to do is get through training and stuff and then bam! You're good for scouting. Probably do a lot of normal missions, but once in a while... y'know... something might happen."
Right?

Technically speaking, Havoc could have made the decision for himself. He had all the tools, and he'd never been the kind of person who relied on others for his decision making.

But after a year as roommates, he'd come to trust Nix's judgement in a way he rarely did for those without a military background. He had a good head on his shoulders, and he had far more experience in civilian manners. If he said it was perfect, then it probably was, and Havoc nodded immediately after Nix finished speaking.

"Thank you," Havoc said simply. "I'll look into it in the morning, and see if I can't put in my application immediately."

For all of Havoc's many flaws, laying about wasn't one of them. He wasn't going to sit down and worry about the details. He was simply going to go in, look up the information, and put in an application then and there.

Of course, it was only moments later that he realized at least one major implication.

"That would mean dropping out at some point," Havoc said. "We wouldn't be roommates anymore." Not unless Nix was planning to get an apartment off-campus, anyway. Nix still had two or three years to go in the best case scenario, where as Havoc was having a hard time imagining scout training being more than a year.

"Thank you."
Man, you had to give this guy credit. Simple, but after a year as roommates, he'd learned that while Havoc didn't say much, what he did say meant exactly what he needed to convey. Technically, he could have made the decision on his own and never even come to consider Nix's judgement. He liked to think that he'd gotten Havoc to at least trust him a little bit. Or at least, he wasn't dead yet, so he like dot think Havoc at least liked him enough not to hate him. You never could tell what was going on with Havoc.
Either way, he grinned and raised his hand up, presumably for a high-five. "Yeah, dude! You got this!"
It was a moment before he put down his hand and was about to give Havoc a raised eyebrow, when:
"That would mean dropping out at some point. We wouldn't be roommates anymore."
...Right.
Shit, he hadn't though of that one. Well, that was a white lie. He'd thought of it earlier in the conversation, but. Eh. The point was - from now on, if Havoc got the job (which, let's be honest, he reasoned, he would, because it's Havoc for Christ's sake) he'd be on his own. And, well, at first... he was kinda nervous.
"You're uh, you're right," he replied, trying to sound casual. "Yeah, dude definitely, I'll just like... stay here, yeah. Cool coolcoolcoolcoolcool. Just uh, don't die, yeah?"
He tried to sound as flippant as he could.

Havoc had arrived on the island with no social skills to speak of. He dealt with simple facts, not feelings, and he'd missed almost every social queue he dealt with.

He'd improved. He'd been on the island for more than a year, and a lot of that improvement could be credited to Nix's patience with him. He'd picked things up, and he could mostly fumble his way through the expected responses, even if most of them were not natural. So when Nix put his hand up, Havoc's brain said high five, and he followed through, albeit with a bit less enthusiasm than he might have otherwise.

"I'm sure you'll be fine," Havoc said, connecting Nix's repetition of cool with the likelihood that he was, in fact, bothered[ by the possibility of Havoc moving out. "I don't plan to die, and I don't believe that being a scout would be a particularly dangerous profession. Would finding a new roommate help things?"

Oh.
When he'd put his hand up for the high-five, he didn't expect Havoc to get it, and just as he was about to put it down, Havoc had given him a high-five.
Which, honestly, was improvement. Back when they'd met, Havoc seemed about as expressive as a brick wall. Now he could high five. And he seemed to recognize his dumb ass's constant repeating of "cool" as some sort of distress thing. Or that something bothered him or something. Which was totally unnecessary as he wasn't freaking out At all. Coolcoolcool. He was coooool.
They grow up so fast, though Nix wryly.
Even so, he sighed, nodding at Havoc's suggestion. Maybe he did need a new roommate. After all, it wasn't like Havoc would stay. Well, he wouldn't outright die, so that left out a guarantee, but still, who wanted to hang out with a college kid when you were an adult dude with a job?
Right, he was mind-rambling again.
He said nah, I'll be okay, but it came out as "yeah probably maybe i mean I dunno probably... maybe, uh, yeah."

I'm sorry for the lateness *sob*

Nix babbeled when he was anxious, a trait that Havoc knew enough to recognize now, even if Nix was the only person he knew who was like that.

But recognizing a behavior was not quite the same thing as knowing how to actually deal with the behavior, so Havoc simply stared a bit, trying to process what would be best to say. Words of comfort? An acknowledgement?

"You will do fine without me," Havoc repeated, his brows furrowing slightly in concentration. "It was good having you as a roommate, but I am confident you'll find a new roommate who will do things just as good as I ever did. Or better."

Havoc certainly didn't have an inflated sense of self worth.

"I will help search for a roommate, if that would help?" He doubted it would, but offering tended to go well.

Clearing his throat, Nix took a moment to kinda assess what he'd said. " I mean, uh, yeah. I got it, man. I'll be okay. I mean, really."
Cue a kind of stare from Havoc. Not exactly analytical, but more thoughtful, as if he was dissecting what Nix had said previously.
His speech in the next few seconds, coupled with the crease in Havoc's brows from the concentration (Nix figured Havoc would need some concentration to pull out a speech like that) - well it was kinda funny. Nix laughed.
"Nah. It's alright, man. I know I'll find another roommate, though I'm probably gonna be lazy lookin' for one. By the way - you look kinda annoyed right now and - " he chuckled - "it's kinda funny. A good speech like that... but you look super annoyed. Brows furrowed."

Annoyed? Havoc paused for a moment, and then shook his head.

"I am not annoyed," Havoc said. "Simply concentrating. My father told me several times that I tended to look upset when I thought about things too hard - it's a habit I have not yet managed to break."

Another thing to work on, he supposed.

Especially if he was going to become a scout.

"I will do my best to keep you updated," Havoc said, giving him a small nod before turning away. He obviously considered the conversation done, his question answered. If he was bothered by the idea that he'd looked annoyed, he didn't show it any more than he showed anything else.
