The sun was too bright and it stung, the umbrella protecting from the worst of it, but leaving parts uncovered at times. Luckily, it was overcast and there were plenty of shadows to duck into. Still, Ishvi had to keep his eyes nearly closed to stop them burning. The short walk back to his apartment seemed to take forever. And though the pain was helping clear his head, the heightened stress was preventing him from shifting back.

All he wanted to do was cry or hurt someone, hear them scream. He'd spent so much time ignoring or fighting his nightmare half and now... He was lost. He looked over at Leto and opened his mouth, then closed it without speaking. Saying he was fine would just be another lie, and she'd know it. He'd said he didn't want to talk about it, and that was true, but he felt a dull ache he couldn't sort out.

"We're friends, right?" Ishvi wasn't sure of anything. He couldn't handle the silence, whatever he said he wanted. Nothing made sense anymore. There was too much to process, but he needed a friend right now. Maybe if he came at the subject from an angle, talked around it, it wouldn't hurt so much. "Why did you become a cop, Leto?"

She
Leto walked alongside Ishvi, holding the umbrella and occasionally changing the angle of it so it could shade Ishvi a bit. She was fortunate to not have to worry about anything other than her emotions, and she couldn't imagine what was making Ishvi like this in the first place. She had decided she'd remain silent until Ishvi decided he wanted to talk, since she didn't want to push him.

She stuck her free hand in her pocket while she did her subtle management exercises. She had to do them whenever walking around in public out of habit, really. It's a bit of an insurance as well, but it's just second nature from when she really had to restrain her anger.

Ishvi's question caught her a bit off guard. She'd like to say yes, since she's known him from their days at the academy, but there were a lot of things they didn't know about each other. Really, she considered him a rival most the time. She took a while to think this question over. "Well, I'd say so, yeah." She wasn't lying, since she did consider Ishvi a friend, albeit in a weirder way. She frowned at the next question. She really had to think that one over.

Why did she become a cop? She had a troubled childhood where even she would admit it would be difficult to see a child from that background actively wanting to become a cop. She had emotional issues which police work could likely make worst, but she's gone through the effort to get an extra grip on them. She finally shrugged. "I did the junior cadet course in high school just because I could. I never really knew what I wanted to do until I left high school. I just felt it was right, really. I don't really have a reason to respect officers, but I did." She sounded completely honest with what she was saying, and had no guilt saying it. She did often wonder why she felt like being a police officer is what she wanted to do but she doesn't regret it.

Ishvi didn't really know what he was saying, too burrowed in grief and confusion to know what was going on. After what he'd just learned, he supposed his tears were natural, but everything at once and his desire to face it all on his own weren't making things easier. He wasn't fine - he was breaking apart, yet he'd never been close to anyone here, always solitary, wanting to prove himself, do everything on his own.

And now, he couldn't talk when he needed it. What did he know about Leto? They'd gone through the academy together, became police officers at nearly the same time. There was that kind of proximity friendship that meant he was comfortable enough to let her walk him home, even though he hated being seen in this form.

"I was raised for our military. Yes, angels fight. Down here you hear more about mercy and compassion. But... justice is punishment. I-" He had to pause to collect himself, thoughts too scattered. "I left to be better, prove myself. I. am not. fallen. Five years or more on this island and all the - the people on it. I'm alone. I.." His voice shook at that. He'd only meant he had no family here, but he really was alone now. His wings fluttered open briefly, and Ishvi almost craved the burn as the sun touched them before he folded them up again.

The half-angel looked away from Leto, for once grateful for this form, simply because she wouldn't see him cry.

She
Leto listened, a neutral look on her face. Not because she didn’t care, but was hesitant to show her own emotion from how much trouble it caused. She couldn’t remember either of her parents, or several of her siblings. The last memory she had now was of another outburst. That was the last memory she had of her oldest brother and sister.

She didn’t know what to say. She somewhat understood the desire to prove people wrong, especially since people just believed that she was just destined to be controlled by her own anger. That was likely a reason why she became a cop.

But, she had been alone for 13 years. Even on the island, she has had few friends and no family. But, she couldn’t really understand what Ishvi was going through. So she just placed a hand on his shoulder, if not hesitant. “Ishvi, I’m here.” She tried to sound considerate, but she just sounded a bit flat. But, her intention was likely portrayed from how she looked.

Ishvi didn't exactly flinch away from Leto's hand on his shoulder, but he didn't look at her either. She could probably feel him trembling slightly. The only reason he wasn't crying right now was that this form literally could not produce tears. He was somewhat horrified that he was being so weak in public, in front of another cop.

His thoughts were scattered and he didn't really know what he was trying to say. Just breaking the silence until he could get home and break down in private. He had to work later too, needed to pull himself together.

"Home wasn't friendly. I've never met a merciful angel... Five years I've sent letters with no reply. Why - why - does it -" His voice broke again. This would be easier if he could lie without everyone knowing. He hated that his emotions were written all over him right now. People would ask if he was okay, and he wasn't. He didn't even know why it hurt so much. One month dead meant they still hadn't answered him, even when they were alive.

"I was always alone. Never good enough. Why do I miss them now?!" It wasn't much of a conversation or a question. He didn't really expect Leto to reply. He was just exhausted - not getting enough sleep, as could be seen from the fact he was even awake right now, clearly not a daytime creature. And bottling up his emotions was getting harder.

"Don't - don't tell anyone about this."

She
Leto kept her hand on his shoulder. She watched him with blank eyes, but internally was going through a lot of ideas and thoughts. She gently squeezed his shoulder when she realised that he was trembling.

She didn't say anything as Ishvi spoke, and she felt she shouldn't anyway. It felt that he didn't often get to speak his emotions like this with other people, and she didn't want to ruin it. In a way, she was somewhat touched that he was speaking about it in front of her. But, this wasn't at the front of her mind. Right now, she just listened.

She pulled her hand away as she looked down at the ground. She then looked back at Ishvi with a serious look as she nodded. "Of course, Ishvi. I won't tell anyone." She sounded serious and completely honest.

He didn't want to talk in front of her or anyone. It was just hard to shove all the conflicting emotions down. The strain of trying to pretend everything was okay was getting to him. He had no foundation anymore. Nothing to be proud of, no one to prove himself to. He was drowning in freedom. Who cared if he never fell now? What would it even mean to be an angel with no leaders? And why did finding out his family was dead hurt so much when they hadn't talked to him since he'd left home?

Ishvi wasn't saying most of the things on his mind, couldn't really sort them all out, a bundle of emotional conflict. He needed to stop feeling before it affected his work. The half-angel didn't quite see that it was already apparent that he was a little more erratic than he had been before all the bad news.

His wings fluttered, still wrapped against him, and he almost just wanted to fly off now and let the sun burn him. It would hurt, but he didn't think it would kill him. Couldn't risk that it would though, he didn't want to have to explain losing two weeks of work, and he didn't think he could handle Heaven.

"I shouldn't... I don't mean to burden you with this. It's hard not talking. I'm just - I'm tired. I shouldn't be awake right now." He wanted to blame the sunlight and exhaustion, which certainly didn't help, but he was afraid it would only register as a lie. He was crumbling, but he had to keep it together. He had to be strong, even if there was no one left to prove it to.

She
Leto remained silent. She was mostly trying to piece together what he was saying, while also thinking with various points in her past. She never really missed her mother when she was really young, and of course she missed her father. He was the only person in her family who never actually left her. Two of her brothers, who left for various reasons, she was a bit too young to know. She didn't miss them. It hurt when her oldest brother and sister left her... it made her angry, afraid, sad. But now she felt nothing towards her two oldest siblings.

She adjusted the umbrella again to keep sunlight from hitting him. If she could help, she could at least help in that regard. She wouldn't even care if he lied, right now, since she could understand that he probably had a lot on his mind. Even if he wasn't telling her what that was. She just simply nodded with a blank expression. "It's fine. I'm not burdened at all. We should get you back home so you can get some rest, right?" Although she said it like a question, she didn't really sound like she was giving Ishvi an option to argue.
