Discovering new weaknesses

The ride to Starlight Academy had been uneventful and boring. Greyson had been wearing a simple black sleep mask to keep his closed to prevent any problems. This, of course, made him very sleepy and the flight to Starlight had been mostly spent drifting in and out of sleep. Whilst he was awake, Greyson felt groggy and irritable. I had been tempting to take of his sleep mask but the thought of accidentally dismantling the plane in mid-air as not an idea he wanted to entertain. It was here that Greyson was told he would find answers to what was going on. His mother and father had been assured that there would be no charge for Greyson to attend the school and that all the answers would be found within.

But Greyson was still nervous... terrified even. He had read books like Harry Potter, where Mr. Potter entered the secret wizarding world with excitement, ready to explore this world a new. But in reality, there was no such excitement. Greyson was terrified of his own power and wanted to figure out how to control it or even cure it. He had also been told that there were other students like him, some with powers and others who were more... supernatural. The word Vampire had been thrown around which terrified Greyson somewhat. The idea that one day he'd wake up to find a student sucking his blood from his neck was enough to keep him up at night.

But now, he as here. Greyson couldn't see a thing through his mask but he heard the sounds of people laughing and some weird whooshing sounds occasionally. He had been led by a member of staff who was essentially his eyes for the day. Greyson attended an induction ceremony, where he was welcomed with open arms along with the rest of his peers, and then was given the tour... which wasn't very useful given the circumstances.

And now? Greyson was sitting under the shade of a tree in the courtyard. He had a lot to take in and needed a moment to process everything that had happened thus far. Greyson could feel the heat from the sun and said a silent thanks to himself for choosing to wear a simple white t-shirt and black shorts combo for clothing. His blonde hair ruffled in the summer breeze as he sat there and enjoyed the peace and quiet.

But sooner or later, Greyson was going to have to take off his sleep mask. His heart began to thump as he wondered... what would happen then?

It was not often that Vinanye visited Starlight Academy. Erm, actually, she had never visited Starlight Academy. The college here was free, so naturally, she figured she outta check it out and maybe enroll in something to better help her understand this culture. Everything was still so very confusing to the little gem, but oh how she tried.

It was after a day of intense researched and trying to comprehend everything she was learning that Vinnie huffed and sat under a particularly shady tree to hide away from the sun. It wasn't a hot day, objectively speaking, but Vinnie wasn't used to warmth. Where she came from, things were right. They always felt just right to her.

She fanned herself, only then realizing someone was at the opposite end of the same tree. She shifted until she was halfway around the large trunk and sitting nearest the boy. "Oh, greetings! I do not mean to bother, but what is that thing you wear on your face?"

Her voice was gentle, like the breeze and with the faint ring that a wind chime possessed. Subconsciously, Vin reached into her pocket to feel the gems she had collected and stored ther.e They were small and still dirty, but she cherished them and took to wondering which she might give to this boy.

For a moment, Greyson felt odd. He couldn't put his finger on it but he was beginning to feel queasy. As if he was riding on a roller-coaster after eating too much ice-cream. It was a minor feeling at first but then it started getting gradually worse. Greyson took several breaths as he tried to calm himself and his stomach. Eventually though, the queasiness was began to get unbearable.

Whilst his stomach was doing backflips, a gentle voice came from his side.
"Oh, greetings! I do not mean to bother, but what is that thing you wear on your face?"

Greyson tried to speak but the only noise that came out of his mouth was a weird mumbling, groan. Eventually he couldn't take it any more and he ripped off his sleep mask to see what was causing this feeling. But all there stood was a young girl, around Greyson's age, who was looking at him with a friendly face. Unbeknownst to Greyson, she was also the cause of his sickness. She was generating an aura which would normally calm people and make them feel friendlier. But Greyson's powers were so in tuned with quantum mechanics that anything unnatural, like magical auras, would cause a back lash with his powers and cause him to feel as he was now. Of course, Greyson wasn't aware of this reason... he just thought he was having a bad stomach ache.

"It's a sleep mask," Greyson replied through deep breaths, "It stops me from seeing..."
It was only then that Greyson realised that he was seeing normally. His powers weren't working and as he looked at this young girl, all he could see was the girl and not her past, present and future.

"I'm sorry," Greyson said, "I really don't feel well. I'll try not to faint on you..."

Vinanye continued to smile at the boy as he explained about the sleep mask. Yes, Underhill had things that were similar. Time Under the Hill worked strangely, though. Both where years were concerned as well as time of day.

"What is it that ails you?" Vinnie knelt beside Greyson and slowly inched her hand forward to place against his forehead, checking for a high temperature. Her mother used to use her lips, but Vin thought that might be too awkward, so she refrained. "Have you gone to the nurse? I am sure they could help you!"

At this point, Vinanye sat with her back against the tree and besides the boy, fully intending to wait out this sickness with him. Was he often ill? She didn't know. It didn't much matter, did it? Either way, she'd wait here with him, because that was the type of person Vinnie was.

Oh the sickness... it was getting to the point where Greyson was beginning to feel as if he would throw up. He took several deep breaths, trying to calm his body and get rid of the sick feeling. It was as if he was suffering from a severe bout of car sickness, his stomach was doing backflips and he queasier than ever. The young girl knelt beside Greyson, which slightly made things worse... though Greyson didn't put two and two together. Then she placed a hand on his head and all hell broke loose.

Greyson's eyes began to glow silver and flashes of this young girl's timeline began to unfold. It only took a second but in Greyson's mind, he was watching her life. First thing he discovered was that the young girl was actually bi-gender. Their name was Vinayne, although people shortened it to Vinnie. Although they appeared to look it on the outside, Vinayne wasn't actually human... they belonged to a race called the Fae. Greyson saw Vinayne being born, saw them growing up, saw them reach adulthood and then...

NO! Suddenly Greyson realised what was about to happen and used every ounce of his mental strength to pull himself away from Vinayne's timeline. He screamed with effort and pain until he found himself opening his eyes, lying on the grounds of Starlight. How long had he been out for? Hopefully not long... his vision was blurry so he couldn't see if Vinayne was still there or not. Greyson took a deep breath, thankful that he hadn't seen this person's future. What if she contracted some sort of disease? What if they were murdered? What if they lived to a ripe old age of however long Fae lived? It wasn't his business to know... and he didn't want to know.

Whatever good mood Greyson tried to find in himself earlier on had evaporated. He was now just as miserable as the first time this had happened. It wasn't Vinayne's fault. How was she to know what would happen? But Greyson was still angry at the whole situation.

Born through Fae magic, but originating as a gem. Vinanye began life as Teinadae, meaning 'precious stone' in the language of the Fae. They were born in a small kingdom Under The Hill, the land of Fae, to a queen without a husband. Their skin had always been tinted blue, adorned with the coloration of Australia's black opal.

Two thousand plus years the Fae had lived and stayed among the court of Precious Stone, where politics were written in blood and friendships were never genuine.

They had been forced to leave when war broke out, not war with weapons for the Fae of Precious Stone rarely fought in such a manner, but a war of blood and words. Hidden knives and secret weaknesses, and boy had Vinnie been a weakness.

Their mother sent them to Manta Carlos under a false name, set up in a tiny apartment. Alone and uncertain of this new world. That led here, to this moment, when everything climaxed.

Vinanye didn't understand what had happened or why. Was he human? Was this how humans functioned? Surely not, for she would have seen this before! Right? Right?

Next Vin knew, she was pushed away, and the boy was on the ground. He didn't look so good, but she was nervous to step any closer. Had it been her who hurt him? No, it couldn't have been. Vinanye had never hurt a person in her entire life.

Hesitantly, she stepped closer, voice small and nervous. "Are you okay? M-Mister? You do not look good at all, no no no. What is the matter? What must be done?"

Vinayne obviously didn't know what was going to happen but it was already too late. Greyson's eyes were glowing silver and he was able to see everything, from the smallest atom to the largest molecule. He began to quickly feel around for his black sleep mask, which he found to the left of him, and placed it over his eyes. Greyson began to breath deeply, first inhaling through his nose and then holding it for 3 seconds before breathing out. He felt his heart stop racing and soon he was back to as normal as one could be in the situation.

"Are you okay? M-Mister? You do not look good at all, no no no. What is the matter? What must be done?"

The voice made Greyson jump, having completely forgotten Vinayne was close to him. Vinayne's voice was soft and nervous sounding. The poor thing probably thought they had caused this somehow. Granted, Vinayne had caused it but they weren't to know that. The sickly feeling in his stomach was still there but Greyson was beginning to get used to it, much like one accepts a headache. The pain is still there but the body just learns to deal with it...

"I'm sorry," Greyson said, his british accent the direct opposite of Vinayne's relaxed accent, "But you can't touch me. When people touch me... I see everything. Where they were, what they're called, what will happen to them, how they'll die. It's not something I want to see. It's why I'm wearing the sleep mask."

"I don't know how to stop it. It's why I'm here. To learn how to get rid of this problem. Or at least learn how to turn it off permanently."

The man sounded quite crisp when he spoke next. Vinnie figured it had to do with his being in pain and so wasn't put off by it. She inched closer until she was next to him and crouched down, being careful not to touch him again. Her mouth puckered as he went on to explain the problem.

"I apologize! Does it hurt?" Vin desperately wanted to reach out and mother him, but she had to keep reminding herself that she couldn't do that right now, or ever. "It would be a good idea to learn how to stop that from happening." She made a face, wondering if that came out wrong. Sometimes it was hard translating cross culture. "Do not get rid of your powers! They are very... good for you when you learn them!"

Vinanye felt tired. She always did after talking in this language for extended periods of time. She couldn't recall when she'd last gotten to speak in Fae. She missed the gentle tongue. The simplicity. But enough about that, there was no need for sadness now!

"Do you want me to go?"

The sickness feeling grew a little more intense but Greyson took several deep breaths and bared with it. There was nothing he could do now and he didn't particularly want to make the day any worse than it already was. But he could feel Vinayne's breath upon him, leaving Greyson to summarise that Vinanye was right next to him. He recoiled a little, afraid that Vinayne as going to touch him again and trigger his powers. Vinayne apologised and asked if he was in pain...

"No," Greyson replied, "I'm just terrified of what I can do and I'd rather not do it if I can help it."

"It would be a good idea to learn how to stop that from happening." Vinayne replied.

"A better idea would be for me to find a way of getting rid of these powers," countered Greyson, "I didn't ask for them and I don't want them. A month ago, my biggest concern was my exams and what I'd be studying in Sixth Form. But now I can see into the future and I can see everything from how a person was born to how they'll die."

"Do not get rid of your powers! They are very... good for you when you learn them!"

"But I don't want them. I never asked for them, or this... or anything. I just want things to go back to normal. I just want this nightmare to be over so I can wake up."

There was silence for a few moments. Greyson was holding back tears as he tried to explain his position on this. Was it wrong to want to be normal, to want to have no superpowers and be an ordinary kid again?

"Do you want me to go?" Vinayne asked.

"Yes..." Greyson said without hesitation. Then he realised what he had said and quickly followed it with... "Wait... No!"
But then he realised he didn't want to be left alone, yet he didn't want the company of others...

"I don't know what I want to be honest..." Greyson said sadly.

Vinanye couldn't comprehend this line of thought. She had seen plenty of scary creatures with scary powers and none of them had feared themselves, not that she had seen, anyway.

"Oh. Powers are not bad or scary. No, no, no. I do not believe in that road that leads you." That was an idiom to Vin's culture, but she wasn't sure how else to explain it, so she merely went on. "But you can make it work. They are part of you, just like anything. Even if they are scary now, they will not always be."

Vinnie sat with him, at a distance as to give him air. She smiled reassuringly. "You must just make a new normal! That is the way of living, yes? And unliving! It is always changing, but change does not have to be scary, friend."

Vin wasn't offended when he told her he wanted her to leave. She had asked, after all, and the Gem only wanted him to feel better. She was prepared to stand and saunter off when he told her to wait and stay. Hesitantly, Vinnie returned to her seat and canted her head at him.

She gave a sympathetic huff and kept right on smiling at him. "That is okay! It is hard to know what we want sometimes, yes? But you have all the time to find out, no? There is no need for the fears."
