Lucy was someone that Angelo had mixed feelings on. He wanted to like them. They were a good person.

But if he was being honest with himself, Lucy's appearance kind of unnerved him. It was the hair, mostly. The centipede-leg-hair. His vision was good, and that just meant he was seeing all those kind of unnerving details in HD.

Lovely.

But he was aware that it was his fault. It was him not being used to things. Him still adjusting. And it was bad that he was unnerved when Lucy was nothing but kind. So he pushed down his nerves, heading for the Helper's Club meeting place and waiting for Lucy to appear so he could talk with her.

Lucy was already in the meeting room. She was up in a corner on the ceiling supported by her insect legs, on the same wall as the door eating some beef jerky. She wasn't expecting anyone to come into the club room for a little while, but her antennae wiggled when she heard the door open. And then Angelo walked in.

Well, this was certainly a surprise, if anyone she'd expect Alma, but Jude? She gave herself a moment to consider how she wanted to handle this before just calling out to him.

"Hey, Angelo!" she said cheerily, her hair legs curled a bit as she waved at him.

Angelo stepped into the room, and very nearly turned around and left when he saw no one.

Then she called out.

She was eating. She was eating. It took every single bit of self control he had to not let the panic show on his face, to shift things up, grab his own arm, and use a liberal dose of his own powers to keep the animal part of his brain from making him run screaming from the room.

Lucy might at least recognize he seemed a bit more... flat than he usually did, his voice less expressive as she waved from the ceiling, his head tilting back to look at her.

Even filtering his own emotions liberally, letting himself calm down, it was still unnerving in a way that someone like Dalia had never been.

"Afternoon," Angelo called up. "I wanted to talk to you about helper club stuff. I had an idea, and someone said it was kind of in your area of expertise."

Got him. Club members were sort of used to her well... insect like tendencies. She was giving him a friendly smile, but laughing a little on the inside. Girl's gotta let some predatory instincts loose, even in tiny doses. Lucy was well aware that her and her sister were pretty unnerving to some people, but that was just fuel to the fire for helping people. Looks weren't everything.

If Angelo was here, that meant it was probably election business. It was about that time of year. Or maybe, it was something else. She dropped down from the ceiling, retracting her additional limbs.

"An idea huh? Well, lucky you, we were looking into maybe expanding our volunteering. So what is this idea of yours?"

Jude was blissfully, pleasantly ignorant of Lucy's intentions. As far as he knew it was just a matter of him being prejudice, and the fact that Lucy was freaking out was entirely on him.

He kept his hand on his arm, letting it take the edge off and keep him from freaking out as he let himself adjust, and then opted to simply distract himself in the main way he knew how: By getting into work.

"We've had a bunch of people showing up at the community center who did time on the islets, and I was thinking that a lot of them don't have anyone... well, at all. No one to write or visit or anything like that. I thought it might be the sort of thing the helpers club might like. Matching students up with people who don't have anyone, so they have... you know, something on the other side."

He was thinking mostly of teenagers who'd been confined temporarily, but really? It could have been anyone.

Lucy listened to Angelo's proposal. This wasn't a terrible idea, this was kind of their thing. They did do volunteer work in the city, whether it be a local soup kitchen or an orphanage. Prison outreach was a next logical step.

"It's worth looking into for sure. I think I'd have to bring it up with our club advisor and well... there's gonna be a lot of logistical things. The thing I'm actually worried about with an idea like that is how many students would actually be on board with this. Even if we set it up so students are visiting with peers who are say having issues with their powers, there's still that stigma."

She clicked her claws on a desk and thought for a moment. "Iggy's been talking about doing more to make new students feel welcome, and help them acclimate to the island, and particularly school. If we're the ones extending a hand, that would be a good gesture in and of itself..."

Iggy. It was nice to hear his name, and Angelo eased off his emotional blanking, the worst of the shock of Lucy's appearance mostly over. He'd always tried to avoid looking directly at her, but his options were depressing limited in this sort of close-quarters one on one conversation. But as long as she didn't do that thing with her mouth that was sort of like eating he was probably going to be okay.

"The stigma's obviously going to be there," Angelo admitted. "I figure we'd have to work with the facility itself. Maybe they have one or two people who they specifically think would be good for this? As a test. A pilot program."

Was it obvious enough that he was volunteering himself?

"I was thinking about doing it myself and making the offer, but it was pointed out this sort of thing is something that part of the helper club might be interested in."

Lucy tapped a dagger like claw on her chin, listening intently to Angelo. Yeah he was definitely kind of uncomfortable being alone with her like this. She'd seen the look on so many people before, usually new or recent. It was fine. From the sounds of things he wanted to be a part of the test group... yeah he was totally volunteering.

"Well I'll put you on the list of volunteers then. As club leader of course I'm going to join as well. I'll have to discuss it with the other members. I figure we'd only need a small handful anyway."

She pulled out her phone to note it down, she was eager to see how this went. "You know, you could've just caught me in the lounge or someplace more public. I know I make people uncomfortable."

She'd noticed, which only served to make him more uncomfortable. Should he blame it on his upbringing? No - not really plausible, with him dating Alma. Should he...

Okay, he couldn't even think of any sort of excuse he could give. He didn't have any. She just unnerved him.

"Sorry," he said, looking firmly embarrassed. "There's no good reason for it. I just... you, uh. I was expecting you to be on the ground."

And acting mostly human.

"It's not anything you did. It's just... something I need to get used to."

Lucy waited for it. This was the part where a train of excuses would come. She'd heard well, a decent bit of it. Mostly from newer people to the island, like Angelo. His gears were turning, but then he just came clean and said it.

"Wow," Lucy's antennae wiggled a bit. "You're the first person to just come right out and say it. This is... huh I wasn't ready."

She laughed a little bit.

"If you'd given me the usual bs I'd drop you down a well and steal your girlfriend. Except no... is it weird that I actually find it refreshing? I guess your prize for that is I'll try not to act as weird around you."
