didn't think this through

For an island full of ridiculously impossible humans, aliens, creatures and more, Alba seemed to get bored far more often than she had any right to be. But after living for so many years amongst it all, even the impossible grew almost disturbingly normal. Talking trees, ten-foot-tall robots, actual gods---all par for the course. She felt completely at home amongst it all. Then again, it wasn’t as though she was perfectly normal herself, after all. There was a reason she was on this island too.

Still, compared to some of the more eccentric residents here, her pyrokinesis and rapid regeneration weren’t much. There was also a reason most of her family had always been able to live easily in the outside world despite their history of possessing unique abilities. Alba didn’t think she wanted to do that though. While the thought of being able to explore a whole wide world appealed to her on some level, she didn’t ever want to have to hide her fire or pretend to be something she was not. Besides, if she was already getting somewhat restless with boredom here, how much worse would the mundane world out there be?

Casually walking through the streets of Manta Carlos city, she enjoyed the view of the sun beginning to set over the horizon. The play of colors was so much like her beloved fire that a small spark of it had burst into life by her fingertips in unconscious response. Though briefly startled by it, she was used enough to her fire acting on its own that she quickly crushed the small flame in her hand before it could get any bigger, and she ended up in trouble again for accidentally burning something down. The brief spike of pain in her palm that followed definitely woke her up from her listless reverie, at least.

A little more aware now, she realized just how late it was getting, and just how far from school she still was. Whenever possible. Alba liked to get as far away from the grounds as she could. While she’d been sent to this island to learn how to control her powers at the Academy, she’d never been particularly invested in that mission herself. Frankly, she was much more eager just to let wild with her fire. Unfortunately, the administration never quite seemed to agree, and grew suspicious of all her “training accidents” a long time ago. So, she’d been kept on a somewhat tight leash, albeit one still with more freedom than she’d had at home. Albe mostly tried to stay within the rules, because getting lectured and punished was really annoying, and one of the rules was that she should really be in school grounds by now.

Groaning out loud at herself, she quickly hurried her steps. If only she had superspeed or teleportation powers instead, or a friend with the same, who could help her. Thankfully, she knew the streets of this city practically like the back of her hand by now, and she knew all the best shortcuts. As with most “shortcuts”, it involved a lot of shady back alleys that most people would probably hesitate over walking into. But then, Alba wasn’t most people.

[ Strings ]

Strings had been on the prowl for a few hours now, eyes on full alert for anything she could find useful or rather, someone. She kept her coat close to her, making sure none of the knives she carried in the holsters were kept away from view. She didn't need a commotion while she was in clear view. Reaching to the darker side of the city, Strings began moving through alley ways, finding the perfect hideaway so she can pounce on her next victim.

As she was just about to move onto the next, she found a person run past into one of the empty alleys. Alone. A grin threatened to split her face under her collar. My what a wonderful coincidence she was having. Her steps were light as she moved to the other alley, attempting to round the block to corner the girl. She was going to be the second kill of the day if Strings managed another lucky hit. And also second attempt at bringing the Demon out from his hiding for the day.

Her pace quickened as the anticipation built up almost to a sprint. By the time she finally faced the girl she was pursuing, she had slowed, steps becoming calculated once their gazes met. "Isn't it a little late for you to be out here? In places like these too," she spoke, keeping her voice even like she hadn't had the motive to chase her down as prey.

Some people had the worst fucking timing.

Alba had just run into one of the back alleys she needed in her shortcut route, when some weirdo appeared out of nowhere, seemingly slipping out of the shadows in front of her. Frowning, she briefly considering just plowing through them, but with the narrowness of the alley, the act was likely to end with them both on the ground, and not in any pleasurable way, unfortunate. So, instead, she slowed to stop, crossing her arms and raising a brow as she wordlessly asked for the stranger to get on with it.

The moment the figure opened her mouth, Alba regretting her decision. Brow furrowing, she felt her temper start to flare up as she demanded, “What the fuck are you talking about?” This was the thing about living on this island. You never knew what weirdo you would meet next. Normally, Alba was all for it, but she seriously did not have time for this nonsense.

Shaking her head, she pointedly took a step closer, “Look, I don’t have time for whatever you’re selling. Just get out of the way.” If she was lucky, if she really stepped on it, maybe she would make in before curfew stepped in, and she wouldn’t have to spend yet another afternoon wasting her life away in detention. But that was definitely not going to happen with this girl in front of her, so Alba was prepared to shove past, no matter the consequence.

A low chuckle escaped from Strings' throat as she heard the girl speak. This one had a temper — she could probably have it easy if she could rile her up. That was the key: something she found out when she looked back to her past losses. She lost her and allowed them to win by letting her anger cloud her. But she wasn't going to let that blind her anymore.

String didn't even budge from her spot when the girl spoke again, "Oh no, no, I'm not here to sell anything. A waste of time. Although, I suppose I could say," Strings' hands were on her holster within the minute, tracing the hilt of one of her knives. She took one tentative step forward, and another after another, meeting the girl in the middle before pulling it out knives on each hand and lunging at her unsuspecting victim. "I've got business with you!"

To be honest, Alba wasn’t exactly hard to rile up, especially under these circumstances, but this stranger was definitely pushing some buttons. Clearly, they had no fucking clue who they were dealing with. Every moment she spent with this weirdo, was another moment lost. Of course, if getting back on time was a lost cause anyway, maybe Alba should just forget about it entirely and concentrate on her current companion.

If you could call this chick that. Well, she wasn’t bad to look at, anyway, so Alba supposed she had that. The personality bit left something to be desired. What was with this cryptic bullshit? Honestly, she had enough of that from her teachers. She didn’t need it from someone who didn’t look much older. Shaking her head. She asked exasperatedly, “What the fuck are you talking about?”

Almost in response to her question, the girl started walking closer. For a moment, Alba thought she was going to kiss her. That certainly sparked a different sort of fire in her. She was still kind of annoyed with the stranger for making her late, but this could more than make up for it. Instead of soft lips on her skin though, she got the sharp brush of steel on it instead.

“Fuck!” Alba cried out, instinctively stumbling back a few steps and bringing up her arms defensively in response. There was a large gash across her shirt now, further marked by the blood leaking out of the wound. Frowning at the sight, she moaned, “Damnit, this is my favorite band shirt too!”

There was fire in her eyes now, as she looked up to meet the stranger’s gaze. “So, it’s a fight you want, then?” Her voice sounded angry, but there was a smirk pulling at her lips. The gash along her torso was already starting to knit itself back up, as fire began to spark all around them, racing up the narrow walls dangerously.

The sight of blood on the knife had Strings grinning wildly. It wasn't new at this point — she'd killed more in her life time even before the demon had tricked her of giving up her powers — but when most her victims put up fights, she loved it when she was the one to draw out blood first. It beckoned for her. But she always liked to play around with her prey. That hasn't really changed for her.

"Aww. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ruin your shirt," she cooed, sarcasm dripping from her voice. She didn't really care--not at all. She could see the anger building up just by looking in the girl's eyes but she noticed the smirk dancing around her lips. This is going to be fun. She was a fighter now was she. Strings could wonder how this can play out. Wouldn't it be nice to rip her heart out at the end of it all?

"Come on and dance with me, hun," she challenged, holding her blades up to her chest. The sparks was lost on Strings for the moment when she came forward, bring her blade down once on the first step, then slicing both upwards on the second step.
