He had detention, a first for him, overall the week had been very eventful for James. The room was mostly empty, except for a few other students, one of which was his friend Klef. He looked at her, things had seem a bit odd between them, as if she was avoiding him.

Well, this was a first. Klef was not the type of person who broke the rules, but when her ego was at stake, she didn't think twice about slugging that guy. Unfortunately, said guy was a solid foot taller. Being blind made it harder to tell whether she had any shot at winning, of course she was not any weaker, or at least that's what she told herself. When she wound up unconscious in the infirmirie for several hours, then could she tell that it probably wasn't the best idea to pick a fight with an upperclassman.

She sat in the room with her legs crossed, daydreaming about somehow getting her sight back and getting back, there was not much else to do anyways. There was a strange presence in the room but she was not able to put her finger on its. Perhaps there was an eight foot octopus in the room too, she still wouldn't be able to tell, its not like she could see it.

He tilted his head, uncertain what to say, he was surprised to see her here. "Uh.....hi Klef," he finally said, breaking the awkward silence. "Its James," he remembered when he had helped her after she had first lost her eyesight.

He scratched the back of his head, uncertain what else to say, "never been in detention before." Needless to say, the school wasn't pleased with the fight, friends of his old bullies had attacked him, this time he won.

Sighing a bit he leaned back, he was tired, a lot had happened lately.

She turned her head towards James, so it was just him. There was an awkward silence between them that wasn't entirely her fault, just seconds ago she wasn't even sure whether or not she was the only person in the room because it was that dead quiet. It was awkward being with him here, especially after the events of the virus. She cringed thinking about how sappy she was back then, she liked him, but she did not need a second pair of eyes nor the support, she totally would have got by fine without someone, or at least that's what she kept telling herself.

" ... um... hi James..." she stuttered in response, drawing her converse closer to the chair. It didn't have to be this way, but she was not sure which was worse, being lonely or being harassed even more for being weak. The feeling of being incompetent in protecting herself swallowed her up. Sure, she could still talk to James, but it would be better for both of them if she just wasn't as clingy and needy.

" Er... Same here..." Klef muttered, keeping her voice low enough to not get in trouble for talking with the teachers. " I mean, I've totally been in fights before, but this is the first time I've lost," she fibbed, "you don't get caught if you win."

He raised an eyebrow at her, he could tell she was lying, even if he hadn't been in detention for winning a fight, what she was saying frankly didn't make any sense. "Well they caught me," he rubbed at his cheek, which was still bruised. Despite the obvious lie, he was still concerned for his friend, "so, what happened?"

James had been in fights before, he'd grown up on the streets afterall, "either way, were stuck here." He didn't like violence, but he thought he did what he had to do. "WHY ARE WE STUCK HERE?" the Shadow finally said, "they started it," the entity huffed.

"Got all my homework done," a small shadow tentacle appeared on his shoulder and swayed slowly, "so not much to do."

Klef sheepishly lowered her head, she should have known better than to have just assumed that James lost too. Quite frankly it was the opposite most of the time for the girl barely over five feet, and even after losing again she still got placed in detention. She looked a little roughed up, but couldn't testify with her injuries since she could not tell where she got hurt.

" Just the usual, typical Tuesday afternoon, I think I just let my guard down too fast," she said, as if she got into fights regular when she actually had no idea what she was talking about. Usually, the cause of her injuries was being accidentally pushed down the stairs or falling down the hallway. Things could be different if she just swallowed her pride and let others know she could not see, but her ego was more fragile than her body.

" Yeah, we're stuck alright," Klef repeated with a half assed smile. This could be one long afternoon if things stayed as painfully awkward as they were. She stretched her legs out again, there had to be something to do besides talk, right?

" I... um... can't exactly do homework... haven't figured out how I'm going to do that yet..." She mumbled. If she wanted to pass the ninth grade, she would eventually have to cave in and tell an adult. Then again, her lack of sight let her put off homework, going back to actually studying had no appeal.

" Um... we could always play rock paper scissors, you're going to have to tell me which one you chose though."

He tilted his head a bit, needless to say he could tell she was still lying. Those who brag about winning fights or getting into a bunch of them are usually just lying to boast.

She did look roughed up, it worried him. "Gotta be careful," he gently brushed a bit of hair out of her face, "I got used to it before I came here."

"Klef," he said with concern in his voice, "you have to tell a teacher." Despite her avoiding and pushing him away, he cared about her, maybe more than he realized. He rubbed the back of his head, "......sorry, I'm not trying to be a pain."

He rubbed and quickly opened and closed his left hand as the usual numbness shot through it, it was caused by nerve damage, "I just....care about you."

" I-I usually am." She told him defensively, when really it couldn't have been further from the truth. While she wasn't too sure what James meant when he said that he was used to it, but she wasn't going to question it either having already guessed wrong twice about him.

Klef blew a strand of her hair so that it could hide her face again. " I can't," she whispered, shaking her head. "It's not you... I just can't."

She was glad that her face was hidden again, her cheeks were flustered and it felt like she had the virus all over again. " I'm glad you do, but I can handle this myself, I've gotten this far, anyways."

" So... how about tick tac toe? Thumb war? Arm wrestling match? Rock paper scissors?" Klef proposed in a desperate attempt to change the subject.

He wanted to say more, if the teachers didn't know her grades would drop, thinks would worsen. But he decided to drop it for now, he'd ordered his help, showed he'd be there for her.

Stretching a bit he smiled a bit, despite the awkwardness he was happy they were talking again. He cared about her.

He nodded, "ok," chuckling a little a grinned a bit, "a game would be fun." Reaching out, he took her hand in his, about to start a thumb war, he hesitated and gently squeezed it, he wasn't sure why. He felt his face heat up a bit, "yes...uh...a thumb war sounds fun."

A grin snuck on her face and it wasn't the half assed kind either. Though she tried to contain her excitement, it was kind of nice having things feel like the way they used to be, even if it lasted a few minutes. She squeezed his hand tight, her nails digging into his skin a bit. For a second she forgot why they were doing this, but she didn't really mind.

"Awesome," she exclaimed, her thumb popping up, ready to fight. " You know the rules right?" Klef asked, eager to start. It seemed that no one else was in detention, though she wasn't entirely sure. As long as no one besides the supervisor saw her like this, she should be ok.
