RE: Demons Out Shopping (Chloe)

The spawn of various hells congregated here. The father demon's name was of interest to Shi Mei’s master. She knew enough of demons to suspect. Gabriel is the Adonai's messenger angel. I believe the name of this 'Gabriel' is what your kind calls 'humor.' This other demon that Chloe mentioned was not known to Voldegra. However, if the father demon could so freely avail himself of Cthulhu's value tokens then Cthulhu was surely not the demon of concern.

"Never met Cthulhu, but I'll take your word for it. Hadn’t heard of an academy either. I’m too old for most school. Learned when to be quiet and listen to sifu, though. Never get too old for that." Shi Mei observed the surrounding constructions as she walked. Voldegra felt her displeasure at seeing no fighting schools. She and Voldegra had not yet seen much of this island. Perhaps this was not where the mortals did such things. "Guess you're at the academy?"

RE: Demons Out Shopping (Chloe)

“Yeah,” she said, “I go to school there. Though, it’s also my home. The school sort of adopted me when ended up here. Before dad showed up, they were my only family here.”

She kicked a stray rock off the sidewalk. “A… freak demon summoning accident dragged me here from a parallel universe. Sounds crazy, but you’d be surprised how common that kind of thing is here.” She chuckled. Aurora assured her that this was such a common occurrence on Manta Carlos that she could set her watch by it. “This place is a freak magnet.” She was only half-joking; she wasn’t the only person who thought there was some kind of beacon on this island that drew weird shit to it. The proper magical theorists had better terminology than ‘some kind of beacon’ and ‘weird shit’ at their disposal, though.

They reached a part of the sidewalk that had grass next to it. Chloe almost skipped off the concrete and onto the ground. The concrete and the asphalt were getting uncomfortably hot to walk on with bare feet, even with Chloe’s freakish demon-feet.

The demon child was no caller, then. She was the called. Voldegra had not thought of this. Her summoner must be found. Such a calling is beyond my knowledge. "Sponsor noticed a summoning about a year back. Thinks you were there. Book was in Latin, yes?" Shi Mei saw the Chloe child looking over the grass. Saw clawed feet without shoes against hot pavement. "Hey, you want to take this to the beach? Looks like could use a break from streets."

Chloe shrugged. “The beach would be nice, I guess.” Walking around with hot feet hurt a little, but she was used to it.

“And… yes.” How could Mei’s ‘sponsor’ know about that? “I was summoned about 7 months ago. The book was in Latin. Dude was trying to summon a succubus, actually, but he screwed up because he had no idea what he was doing. That spell was not supposed to summon me; I am not a succubus. And I didn’t… do succubus things with him. I actually threatened to kill him if he didn’t tell me what was going on.” She chuckled, bitter. “My part of the multiverse qualifies as kind of a bad neighborhood for non-normies.”

No idea. This explained much while drawing so many questions. "Dude did something nobody knows how to do without trying. I'd say clever, but sounds like your dude just stupided himself past the rules. Don't blame you for putting the hurt on him. Would've done that myself."

Chloe's words about her old world stung inside Shi Mei. Feelings that Voldegra did not fully comprehend. "Bad place, yes? But sometimes a bad place can be home."

Chloe shrugged. “Yeah, but sometimes home can be a really bad place.” The more she told people about how bad her old world was, the easier it was for her to let go of the place.

She might have gone on about it some more, but Mei was still a potential threat. Chloe didn’t want to give away too much information about herself without getting some in return. “So, what about you, Mei? I’ve told you a good bit about what I am and why I’m here, but what’s your deal?”

RE: Demons Out Shopping (Chloe)

Shi Mei's face tensed with old rage. "Yes, home is not always good. Maybe best that you're here now. Wouldn't go back where I came from. I don't expect you to do the same."

So the demon child tired of speaking her secrets. Voldegra would permit Shi Mei to speak a few of their own. "Like I told you, my boss just found out about the islands. It likes a lot of the things you've got in this world. Wants to see what Manta Carlos has for it. Boss sent me because I'm tough. Been fighting for a living since I was your age. I'm all human, but about half demon also."

Shi Mei grinned, heart filling with fierce and brutal joy. "Someday I'll wake up all demon. Looking forward to that day."

Chloe raised her eyebrows at Mei, wondering if becoming a full demon meant the same thing for Mei as it would for Chloe. Immortality was a tempting offer, and so was all that power – but would Mei need to live with the same kind of guilt she would? Would Mei even care?

Mei said she’d been fighting for a living since Chloe’s age. Chloe wondered if she might have ended up like her, if she had never come to Manta Carlos. Only she would have been fighting as a means of surviving, rather than as a living. That was probably pretty different.

“Hm,” she nodded. “And just who is your boss? I mean,” she hastily corrected herself, realizing she might have made a terrible misstep. “I’m not asking for a name, of course. Names have power. But… what does your boss do?”

Chloe didn't think that was too dangerous of a question.

How polite this child is. Voldegra was aware that its sense of amusement was not quite like what these mortals knew as 'humor,' but it found a kind of satisfaction in the Chloe child's hesitation to ask its name. Even so, as the child of a demon she was one of few who might be able to turn Voldegra's name to her benefit rather then its own.

"Names mean a lot. Someone is always paying attention to them. Usually the one with the name." The edge of the island was now close enough for Shi Mei to see. The water beyond sparkled with constantly shifting flickers of sunlight as they approached. "My boss likes this world. Full of pretty things. It wants to find things it likes, people it likes, make them its own. Has quite a collection."

“Okay.” Chloe nodded, thinking that sounded surprisingly benign. Collecting things and –

Oh. And people.

Her eyebrows furrowed, but only for a moment, before her expression softened itself again. “Your boss… collects people?” She tried to sound amused, like it was some cute euphemism or in-joke among demonic friends. In reality, she could think of several things that this could mean, and most of them disturbed her. Soul-stealing and enslavement were the first things that came to mind.

Maybe she shouldn’t be letting Mei lead the way. When she got to the shore, was something going to emerge from the water and snatch her up? “Mind if we stay off the beach, actually? Sand would get stuck on my feet and bother me all day. That bench there should be fine.”
