Okay, Rei had to admit, that was a stupid question. Whatever the slavery was, Rei didn't want to take any orders, but most importantly, he didn't want to imagine what would happen to him. The only time he saw real-life slavery was back in Lust Hell, and what separated him was being fortunate enough to be royalty and have a protective mother.

Rei's expression saddened when Chloe showed how little faith she had in his dad coming to rescue him. That, on top of explaining how big changing his species would be, just made him feel worse.

"I'll make my wish smaller then. I don't care about being a demon... I guess. What if I only changed sins? I could be Pride or Greed or something."

Chloe felt a little bit bad about crushing Rei's dream like this - but it was better for him to feel a little bad now than to do something stupid later. He had to know how much trouble he could get into, in the worst case.

She thought about the idea of changing domains for a little bit. "I guess you would have to talk to one of the sin lords about that... and now that you mention it, that sounds way better than anything you could be doing with black magic." She smiled at him. "As far as getting your wish granted is concerned, anyway."

Rei's sadness was replaced with pure excitement at Chloe's suggestion. "Really? That sounds too easy. But what Sin do you think is the best? I guess Pride. because I'll always be happy about myself." He was absolutely confident in his answer the excited smile he wore proved it.

"I need to find someone to go with me through one of those portals though. I don't want to tell Mom. She won't be happy. I know it. Can... uh... you go with me?"

But could she help him go down and talk to the sin lords? Chloe thought about it. And it didn't take long for her to make a decision.

With the way Malara felt about Pandora moving out - Chloe didn't feel comfortable even visiting yet. It was on her bucket list, but she was going to have to put it off. Probably for a year or two. Plus, she had never been down to the sin hell - how could she help Rei find her way around?

"I'm... probably not the best person to help you there. But I'm sure there are people around here who could. We have relatives who've spent more time there."

"Oh! I could ask Rufus. He's a Pride demon and... I think he likes me? I don't think he dislikes me. I just... need to find him." Now that he thought about it, he barely knew any Pride demons, and if he did, he didn't keep note of them. Rei was just about to leave before remembering two things. One, leaving without saying thank you and goodbye to Chloe was very rude. Two, he had one more question to ask.

"Um... do you know any good Pride demons that could help? I don't want my mom to know, so I need someone who'll help without... um... her permission." He tried his best to give big puppy-dog eyes with an innocent smile, but it came off extremely awkward and had "guilty" written all over it.

Chloe really had to think. On the one hand, antagonizing Rei's mother couldn't be a good idea. But on the other... if it kept Rei from doing something so stupid he regretted it for all eternity, she should do it.

Right?

With a sigh, she got out a piece of paper and started writing down some phone numbers.

"So... I really think you should try talking with your mom first. For the record. If you haven't already. But... here you go." It also had Rufus's email on it, if Rei didn't have that already.

"Mom would be really really angry. It'd be like betraying her. I can't just say, 'I don't like my sin, so I'm changing it,' without starting a big argument."

He frowned and fidgeted with his clothes before taking the paper. "Thanks... just... I wanna do this mostly on my own so I don't get into as much trouble, y'know? I'm independent and mature. I can do it."

"I... guess I see where she would be coming from. Better than the argument about becoming a risen demon, at least." That wasn't setting the bar very high.

"I'm sure you can do it," Chloe agreed. "And since you're so independent and mature, you'll be careful. You won't agree to anything stupid, you'll think first. Right?"

Rei noticed the strained smile on Chloe's face and fidgeted some more. Then, he gave an exaggerated groan and roll of his eyes when before shooting a confident, but tense smile at Chloe. He knew what he was doing, and with this paper, he had all the backup he needed. "Yeeeeah. I know. If I did stupid things I wouldn't be one of the smartest kids in my grade."

Before heading towards the door, his expression softened into genuine appreciation. "Thanks a lot for the help. I'm gonna do great and be safe. You'll see a new and improved Rei in no time."

Chloe smiled at him as he left.

She wasn't confident that she had done the right thing. She was helping a kid get in contact with powerful demons for a magical favor. Under no circumstances should that pass the gut check - but she couldn't think of anything she could have done better.

Or she could have just put more fear in Rei and kept him off this entire dangerous path. Fuck. Maybe Karen was right about her after all.

She pinched the bridge of her nose. She probably ought to get in touch with Rei's mom. Just as soon as she figured out how to bring this up.
