Vivian and Arno met at those indoor Japanese gardens they'd mentioned on their first date. It had become a habit - they got together for it at least once every other week. It was a great place to go for a walk, especially with the weather being this cold.

She was in a bad mood today. Yesterday, her cardiologist told her that she would need another surgery on her heart. She'd had a lot less energy lately, getting winded just from walking between classes. A part of her knew this was coming, but it still felt awful to have it confirmed. She was so sick of this. Sick of waking up in hospital beds, missing school, wondering if she wouldn't wake up the next time they did this song and dance.

And now she had to tell Arno about it all.

"Hey, Arno." They met just inside the door to the gardens. Vivian blew on her hands, warming them up from the cold walk over. She already looked exhausted. Miserable. "I dunno how far I'm gonna get to go with you today."

Arno wasn't overly socialized, so dating was new to him, so he was happy when he found Vivian. He'd enjoyed their time together, their simple but fun dates, pushing through the mino awkwardness that occasionally popped up.

They'd been meeting up for walks at the indoor garden, again today. "Hello Vivian," he'd say with a smile. "That's ok, we can cut it short today," a look of concern appeared on his face as he saw how drained she looked.

Their walk would begin. "They put in a new fish pond, has some unique fish from Japanese mythology in it," he'd say, trying to talk a bit before asking about her well being. "Are you ok?" he'd ask after they'd been talking a bit, "you seem tired."

Vivian breathlessly tried to carry on a conversation and walk. She soldiered on as best she could, but it was clear something was wrong. She had been doing worse than she realized. When Arno asked about her health, she went to sit down on a bench and catch her breath.

[I'm not ok actually,] she would answer telepathically. [I have a shitty defective heart, and it needs surgery again.] She took an emphatic, frustrated breath in and blew it out. [That's why my doctors wanted me to do all this walking, anyway. It's because of my stupid heart.]

Arno would sit with her, listening, the concern he felt growing. "Oh...I see," he'd say, thinking a moment before wrapping his arms around her in a gentle hug.

"I can't say I know what you're going through," he'd tell her, immortal beings rarely had health issues. "But....I'll be here for you," he'd assure her.

"When's the surgery?" he'd ask, taking her hands and giving them a gentle squeeze.

Vivian took a deep breath and leaned up against Arno.

[This Monday.]

She finished catching her breath. She felt pathetic - it took so little to leave her winded.

[I should probably tell my parents the surgery's coming. In case I don't make it. But if they come, I'll have to come out to them as trans, and tell them about my new name and everything. So...] She sighed, and Arno would even be able to hear it through their telepathic link. [I guess, that's the dilemma that's been keeping me up nights.]

"I'll be there," he'd say with a nod. "I want to be there when it starts, and I'll be there when you wake up," he'd gently snug her.

He'd shake his head. "Don't talk like that, you're going to be fine," he couldn't really acknowledge the possibility she wouldn't make it, he liked her. "Gotta believe you'll beat this."

Arno would pause when her parents were brought up. "Do you want me to be there? Like, maybe not in the call if you're not ready to introduce us, but if it helps, I can be next to you." He wanted to support her in this.
