Name: Darcy Gwydion Jones
Age: 18
Birthday: 17 August
Gender: Male
Species: Fae: Tylwyth Teg
Category: Student
Class: College
Grade: First Year
College Major: Mathematics and Physics, Magic Theory (Minor)
Appearance Description: In his 'natural' form, Darcy has a shock of bright blonde hair, which falls in long ringlets down to his shoulders, and is often swept back away from his face. His hair is interdispersed with white and golden feathers, which also frame his face. His arms are also feathered, his fingers talon-like. His legs are like a bird's making him resemble somewhat an avian-faun. His eyes are a piercing jewel-grey, and his lips are drained of all colour, giving him an almost pallid appearance.
Mostly, however, he takes a human form. Dark eyed and dark haired, with a healthy farmers' tan, his tea-stain skin speckled with a nebula of freckles across his nose and cheeks. His chin is pointed and a little feminine, and his cheekbones high. He has a slender, rounded nose, upon which sit a pair of very thin, circular wire-framed spectacles. His eyebrows are perfectly manicured and quite angular. He has a wide smile, all teeth perfectly aligned, except for his right canine which is quite prominent and sits slightly in front of its neighbours.
Frame-wise, he's fairly average at 184cm, with a set of densely packed muscles belying his immense strength, though he often wears loose fitting white regency-style shirts with many ruffles. He's also often clad in tight-fitting black trousers, held up ordinarily with suspenders, and has a pair of buckle-down boots.
Personality Description: Darcy is quite an excitable young man, and always gives his all when he's really engaged with something that captures his attention. Capturing his attention isn't necessarily all that easy, however, and what will engage him on a given day can change quite rapidly, which ultimately leads to him being quite fickle. When he's calm, he's incredibly blasé and collected, he will often engage in punning, word games, and other linguistic tomfoolery. He can be quite difficult to pin down and hold to his word, as the letter of his agreements is far more important to him than the spirit of intent behind them. When he has decided his loyalties however, he is unwavering in his steadfast support of his friends and allies. He can be excessively cruel and vindictive towards people that cross him, and "protecting his friends" can quickly cross a line into thinly-veiled sadism. He is broadly amoral, taking a very pretentious position that it isn't his job to affect the balance of good and evil in the world, related to his lack of a sense of belonging to either the Seelie or Unseelie courts of fae.
Active Abilities: Changeling - Darcy can shapeshift into any human form, though he can't directly emulate the appearance of others. He can also turn into a barn owl, being able to shift between his true form, his human form, and his owl form. Under the light of the full moon, his true shape is revealed, and he cannot assume any other form.
Fairy Ring - Darcy is able to teleport from one place to another by turning on the spot. He can only teleport somewhere he knows or is told the exact distance to relative to where he's teleporting from. He leaves behind a fairy ring of mushrooms and daisies when he does this.
Englynion - Darcy is able to sing magical enchantments known as Englynion. Each Engyl is a separate ability but all are performed the same way, by singing an improvised counterpoint melody in the Cerdd Dant style. They are made more potent if accompanied by a harpist, and/or sung in harmony.
Engyl Trawsnewidiad -
Gwynt yn adain, daear o dan y draed,
Oeddwch yn dynol, gwaed,
Yn wythiennau newydd.
This Engyl can transform a person and their personal affects into an animal between the size of a mouse and a horse. A person's intelligence is maintained, as is access to any powers they possess. The transformation can be actively resisted, should someone be powerful enough they will turn back in just a couple of minutes, but in general the transformation will last anywhere from five to ten minutes to a couple of days. At full strength, when sung in full Cerdd Dant style, the transformation can last for several days.
Passive Abilities: Mesmerism (Fairy Aura) - Darcy has a strong animal magnetism, people around him tend to find him unnaturally charismatic, or irresistible, or attractive. It can be overcome with concentration and willpower if one becomes aware of the effect. This charisma is amplified slightly when Darcy is singing, or dancing, or any other performance he might make for others, though it is applied at all times, and cannot be "turned off".
Super-human Strength - Darcy is possessed of immense strength that far outstrips his already fairly muscular build. He's unable to turn this off and on, which means that he has to exert an extra degree of control so as not to accidentally cause any wanton destruction, which is entirely possible should he lose his temper.
True Name - Darcy is unable to be bound by any contract of any description not entered into using his true faerie name. If he lies, no magic or spell can detect that he is lying, if he is not known to the caster by his true name. His true name can only be divulged by himself or someone that knows it, never guessed at or divined.
Weaknesses: Like many fae, Darcy is weak to "cold iron"; in his case, this means all non-carbonated iron (so not steel). Being in contact with iron will drain his strength and in extreme and prolonged cases, temporarily rob him of his powers, making him lethargic, stiff, cold, and magicless. Proximity to iron is also a problem, and it's possible to ward him off with a horseshoe nailed to a door, which would make him unable to enter.
He is also strongly averse to salt, and will struggle to walk across it, and it gives him mild burns when he touches it. Strangely salted food is okay; it's absolutely a context-dependent weakness.
Oak, broom, meadowsweet, as well as Holly and Mistletoe are also anathema to him, and he will avoid them at all costs, even putting himself in dangerous or unusual situations to get away from them. In the latter case especially this can lead to hilarious results.
The ringing of bells, especially church bells, cause him a splitting headache, and if they're particularly loud, he'll pass out upon hearing them.
Finally, he is unable to tell any lies to anyone who knows his true name, and must always speak the absolute truth to them. If someone divulges their "true name" (if they are bound by similar laws to himself) to him, he must tell them his true name.
Common Magical Items: Simple Language Charm (Welsh)
Biography: Darcy was born from an egg, laid by a Barn Owl and subsequently hatched by Blodeuwedd, the wife of Lleu Llaw Gyffes made of the flowers of the oak, broom, and meadowsweet. When she betrayed and killed her husband, she was turned into an owl, and made to live only in the night. Stealing the nest of the barn owl, Blodeuwedd hatched its eggs, thus giving birth to Darcy, who at that time was given his true name of Anarawd, and his two brothers, Bleddyn and Emrys. Blodeuwedd left the three boys, an owl, a wolf, and a boy to fend for themselves. The three broodmates began amicably enough, but upon the next full moon, Anarawd and Bleddyn gained half the body of a man each. Bleddyn, jealous of his brother Emrys' full human form now he had a taste for manhood, killed Emrys when he fell asleep. He intended to eat Emrys' body when he was a wolf, in order to become a man, however, when Anarawd and Bleddyn awoke, they found that Emrys' body had disappeared.
The next full moon, the two boys are set upon by Ellyllon, fairy elves, and taken before Queen Mab of the Tylwyth Teg (fair folk), at whose lap sits Emrys, revived and well. The Queen strips Bleddyn of his half-man's body, turning him into a wild wolf, and turns him out into the world, to howl at the loneliness he has wrought upon himself every full moon. Anarawd, she gives the body of Bleddyn, turning him into a changeling. But she has him swapped with a human child that she has taken a fancy to, for not defending his brother from murder.
As such, Anarawd becomes Darcy Gwydion Jones, and is raised by the human boy's father, Carwyn Jones. This, however, was not Carwyn's first run in with the Tylwyth Teg, however. His son's mother was a lake-maiden, whose hand in marriage he had won with gifts of freshly baked bread and boiled sweets, and she was instantly able to tell that her son had been taken. The day Darcy appeared in place of her real son, she disappeared back beneath the lake, never to be heard of again from any mortal, alive or dead.
Darcy was then raised by his father as any normal boy. He was prone to... Behavioural problems, and maintained several peculiarities of fae children, but his father still believing him to be his son, raised him as he might any normal human child. He was sent to school and played with the other children, where he was generally well liked, but occasionally feared; especially if he lost his temper.
It wasn't until his teens that it really became apparent that while he excelled at school, and he had very little trouble wooing the girls in the local township, that he was absolutely abnormal. It was at this point that he displayed his first outward signs of magic, and he was picked up by the academy. Carwyn wasn't exactly surprised at his son's supernatural prowess, but was surprised to learn that he was in fact a full blooded Tylwyth Teg, and not in fact Carwyn's own son. Their relationship didn't sour at this point however, as he reasoned that a changeling son was probably part for the course with fairy marriages.
Resources: Carwyn's dowry from his marriage consisted of a substantial collection of very large and exceedingly priceless jewels, most of which Darcy's father kept, but a couple of which he sold, and as such Darcy has access to any and all of the money that he requires. Furthermore, he is fairly well connected within the fairy world, due to his occasional communication with his brother Emrys upon the full moon.
