What happened now? Pasha sighed, not looking much too impressed... Or was that just his usual face? Probably that. But in all honesty, Pasha wasn't entirely sure and that was new for him. He wasn't 100% on what could be done at this point.

"There would be no point in filling out adoption papers for you." She was too old and would become independent shortly. Though he probably would if it was requested of him, there would be little point in doing it aside from the legal aspects, which he didn't figure they needed.

"Otherwise... I doubt the letter would matter much in changing things. It is new information, that is all." The secret was out, but contained to the island and the two of them. Nobody from Russia could hunt him down here. Pasha was utilitarian in that sense; the information wouldn't change his everyday very much. He supposed he could take on a more father-oriented role, but not without Anastasia asking for it.

She didn't see the point. She was already eighteen, and a legal adult in essentially every country's eyes. It occurred to her that Pasha didn't even know - most high schoolers in their last year would be seventeen, but she'd been a late (or early, depending on how you looked at it) child.

"I became an adult last september, so it would be unnecessary, yes." He probably didn't realize exactly when she was born - he'd barely known her.

Of course, Pasha didn't actually help in any way. Or volunteer information on what she actually cared about. Served her right for being vague for once, and she let out a little sigh before actually asking what she should have asked in the first place.

"Do you actually want to try and do 'family' things, or do you want to... just carry on as we were?" Family friends, in other words.

Family things. Pasha would've cringed at those words if he had less self control. He was one of those types that never really expected to have a family; his parents knew that his sister would be carrying on the lineage and Pasha had always made it rather clear that he wouldn't want children of his own.

"I had never planned on having children." He might as well be upfront about that. "I will help you in any way you may need, as in a way I am still somewhat responsible for you." Yekaterina had written in her letter about things along those lines; she wanted Pasha to watch over her, even if he didn't want to be directly caring for her.

Well, that was good enough for her. Her family had been close and loving, but not terribly expressive about it. Certainly they missed out on a great number of 'family things' that people were expected to do. Honestly, after he said he'd help her, she drew a complete blank. She really had no desire for someone to... what, take her to a father-daughter dance? What did fathers really do? It wasn't as if he was going to be on the hook for her college bills or anything.

"I suppose it's not even a 'family' thing, but..." She trailed off, mentally fighting herself on if Pasha would be of any help. "I can't say I know what I should be doing with my life now. Originally I was going to go into the military, but Manta Carlos has no standing army." He didn't know her all that well, but he knew the skills she possessed, and aside from herself he seemed the most likely to have some kind of an idea.

There was a pause at that. Going into the military was a fine idea. In fact, greatly preferred if he had any say in it. But it was true; Manta Carlos had no standing army, or any military structure as far as he was concerned. It was a pity, really, but the forces of magic seemed to keep all people out anyways.

Which brought up the other possibility.

"Hm..." He made a faint sound, mulling it over for a few seconds in his head. "I suppose, given your... newly discovered lineage, it may be wise for you to consider becoming the next Winter."

That was a double edged sword, however. It had a vast number of implications, including the fact that Pasha himself had to die. If he didn't die in Anastasia's lifetime, she would have trained for nothing, too.

To say that it was a large decision would have been an understatement.

When Anastasia had asked for advice, she'd been expecting something mundane. Something like 'consider going into the police' or 'a career in management might fit your temperament' or 'teaching self defense would be a rewarding career'. She was not expecting that he suggest she literally become the next incarnation of winter. She stared blankly at him for several seconds, the idea slowly rolling over in her head.

In all honesty, she had no idea what that really meant. Sure, he was winter, but... but what else? What did that entail, as a career? She also wasn't entirely sure if that even paid any money. She was fairly sure it didn't, which would mean she'd really need two careers.

"What exactly does winter do?" Which was mostly the same thing as asking what he did, only she suspected it was not in the winter job description to run a bar.

So now Anastasia knew, to some extent, how the relationship dynamic had worked between the three of them. Mikhail had loved him first, but ended up with Yekaterina because the government wasn't exactly approving of that kind of relationship. Then there was a permissioned affair, than another affair, then all three of them ended up entangled in one of the oddest webs, then... well, he left.

"Winter does... a lot of things, but not actively." Now, how was he supposed to explain a lifetime of training to her? He'd been Winter long enough to get a handle on things, but he'd had nobody teach him. His mentor had been blown to bits, he'd felt a cold breeze and that was it.

"For you to become Winter, I need to die." Putting that upfront, of course.

Oh. Oh. Well, that was generally not the sort of thing that you wanted to hear when you were considering a job. Especially not when the person in charge of the job was her father.

It still felt odd to attach that sort of word to Pasha. It didn't quite fit. Father was still Mikhail, no matter what.

"Except you'll live forever - so... you'd be training your own replacement, in case anything happened to you." She wasn't going to be one of those foolish people who was going to pretend that bad things didn't happen to good people. One day, Pasha might very well die, and denying it would do nothing but harm.

Clever girl.

"Yes." It was very simple, really. He'd heard here and there that seasons would go through quite a few apprentices before they actually died, and he had no idea how many his own 'mentor' had gone through before he'd been blown to bits. He himself had never quite considered taking someone under his wing as the next Winter, figuring that if he passed on with nobody in 'contract', then it would be randomly passed on. Maybe.

"There is the off chance that I may outlive you. I am in the middle of no war, unless I return to Russia. Unless something big happens in your lifetime, I don't think you'll ever need to take on the mantle."

So she was, in other words, a backup. She would probably never need to be winter. Pasha would probably outlive her. Or - she paused, considering that for a moment.

"I... am not actually clear if I can die." She didn't seem to be capable of dying from physical damage, but what about aging? If her power worked the way she thought it might, she would finish maturing, but she would never age. Aging was the body breaking down - and her body seemed unwilling to do just that. "Any damage my body takes heals itself. The only scars I have are seemingly from before my power activated itself." Which was curious in itself - why had her power come around so late? It seemed like the kind of thing you would be born with, only the best she could guess it had activated sometime after she turned fifteen. Were powers like hers activated by puberty? Or did they only activate when you would have 'died'?

"It's possible I might live perpetually until someone finally figures out a way to kill me." She imagined there had to be a way for her to be killed, but she couldn't begin to guess what it would be.
