A wolf stood outside of the administration building, sniffing at the ground, walking in circles. The wolf had a collar with tags on it: "Raphael Quinn" and "Shapeshifter."

He was growing tired of walking in circles, nose to the ground on this wild goose chase. That girl was just gone, as far as he could tell. Sniffing revealed nothing interesting except for her visits to the boys' dorms. The interviews didn't have any serious inconsistencies, and though there were a few missing alibis he could follow up on, it wasn't much.

Felix showed up at the meeting point like he said he would. The wolf jumped up, landing on his feet in a hybrid werewolf form, fully-clothed in his police uniform. "Any luck?" he asked. His eyes were out of focus as he looked at Felix. He was still shifting them into human eyes.

He could use some lunch about now. The academy kiddos had all finished their lunches hours ago.

Working with a partner, especially one that wasn't Toby, was new to him, but Raf seemed like the good sort, even if he was a bit silly. Moreover, he hoped that nose of his would land them something. Felix was drawing a blank here, and as he interviewed more and more people, the track turned colder.

He gave an apologetic look at Raf. "I interviewed a number of teachers, counselors, and staff members about students to look out for. I do have some notes here, but a lot of these students apparently boast about slaughters. Whoever this killer is, they're a lot more aware of what they're doing than the others." He tapped his lip. "My biggest prospects at the moment is the Mad Doctor or the Bunny Butcher. If it's the doctor, we should expect a corpse in a few weeks... though killing a pretty girl seems highly irregular for him. His MO is usually people that stay out when it's dark, or people easily forgotten. If it's the butcher, too, it'd be the Bunny, and there should be a corpse to show that. Did you ever find the last place the girl went to before her scent disappeared?"

"Yes, actually," Raphael said. "She went to the bus stop after practice. So, maybe we could pull some camera records from the public transportation guys? My hope is that she just... ran away, for some reason."

His mouth was smiling, but his eyes were sad. It wasn't very likely, and he knew it, but it felt better to think that way. It gave him a glimmer of hope to hold on to. On the believable end of things, he was hoping for a kidnapping. Still horrible, but at least she would be alive. Anything would be better than those sick fucks Felix was looking into.

"So, boss. Lunch break?"

Felix listened to his report, then he looked at him with a similar expression, smile reassuring and eyes sad. It was a nice thought. He gave Raf a small pat on the arm — he knew this guy was a good kid. "Hey, maybe, maybe. She decided she wanted the simple life and started an apple farm away from the city. She wears overalls everyday and is much happier now."

He gave a small nod at the offer. "Right. We should probably get some fuel in our tanks before we head into the public transit office. Those guys like to make people wait."

Felix started walking towards the gates, motioning for Raphael to join him. "So any preferences? I'd love some Burger King, because I'm possibly the worst Hindu in the planet." He giggled.

"Tch. Breaking with your religious beliefs for some Burger King." Rafa shook his head. "We should at least go to Nissa's, if you want a burger. You ever been there? It's a local place. Best burgers in town as far as I'm aware."

He could imagine why people didn't want to eat there, though. People were suspicious of eating meals prepared by fae - in a lot of the legends, it made you a slave to their will or prevented you from ever leaving their domain. Neither of those things had happened to Rafa yet. His grandparents used to love to treat him there when they visited, back when he was in school.

"I figure if you're gonna commit a sin, you might as well make it worth it. Or, whatever the word for sinning is in Hinduism." He shrugged. Rafa only knew a lot about Catholocism and the handful of cults he experimented with in high school.

"I don't want to get into specifics, but eating burgers isn't as big a deal for me as other Hindu, don't worry about it. Cows are sacred but... I'm not going to get in trouble for it." Felix smiled. When they got to his car, he gestured for Rafa to get inside before going to the driver's seat himself. He turned on the engine and put in the coordinates for... Nissa's?

"I've heard of that. Never eaten there personally. I heard it's just some sort of fae trick to get you to enslave yourselves to them by buying a burger, and I don't mean to profile, but I'd rather not be caught up in that just in case... I'll try it if you say it's fine, though." He nodded, determinedly. "If I do turn into a fae slave, please tell my husband I'll be back at an undetermined time."

He drove off from the school and into the city. Felix glanced at him while he drove, unsure if he should make conversation. He should, right? They were going to keep working together. "Do you like it? Working in the PD, I mean."

"It hasn't happened to me yet," Rafa said to answer Felix's concerns. "And if it happens to you, well, doggone it, I'll just have to hound them until they give you back." A silly reassurance for a silly concern.

How did "I like it well enough so far. You see some nasty stuff out there sometimes, but..." he shrugged. "It's exciting, it pays well, and it makes a difference in people's lives. What more can you ask?" A brief pause. "Well, I feel like I'd be more useful as a detective than a patrol officer. So there's that. Which reminds me, thanks for letting me come along and help out. I'm glad my nose has been able to give us a lead."

Rafael looked at the sky. It was cloudy, getting darker event though it was the middle of the day. It was probably going to rain. He hoped it wouldn't, or he wouldn't be able to pick up Kayla's trail anymore.

Felix giggled. It did sound silly, now that he voiced it loudly but, well, Asians were known to be very superstitious."You stuck two dog puns in there. I'm impressed!"

That was a good response. Felix mulled his own answer for the question, and aside from other details, it was much of the same. "Yeah. I feel the same way. A lot of people have bad opinion about the police, usually from previous experience or going off the state of politics in large countries. I'm glad that most police I know here, despite those dissenting opinions, are enthusiastic about making a difference in their community... Well, aside from the angels that want to smite all evil. But that's at least a minority, instead of something instilled in the system."

He smiled at the sentiments. "No problem. I know what I was like, back when I was starting out, too. It's confusing but instinctive when you're out there in the field. I think your nose would give you an advantage for a lot of cases, too!"

Felix followed his gaze. Was it going to rain? He felt a bit sad that he'd be stuck out doing work, instead of bundled up in his new house. Rain was only nice when you weren't working. He turned a corner and entered the wider city district, driving past the business area for the restaurant. "Here, then?"

It took Rafa a full five seconds to realize how "smiting all evil" could be a bad thing. It probably had something to do with those CAE assholes. If nothing else, that whole controversy had corrected his perception of demons a little bit, but it still bothered him how often he ran into those folks out in the field. It made him uneasy.

"Yep, here it is," Rafa said. "I hope Nissa's here. She's so sweet. And she addresses me as 'sir wolf.' It's the cutest damn thing."

The interior design of the place made it clear that this was a Fae establishment. There were several trees growing out of the floor inside the building, since Nissa wanted to respect them when the property was being built. There were no electric lights, but there were magical ethereal ones, floating through the air. A bubbly little winged person, about a foot tall in total, stood atop a desk and greeted them cheerily as they came in. "Hello, sir wolf! How many shall I be seating today?"

"Just us two, thanks."

She flew over to a table by one of the trees and slapped her hand on the top of the table. The menus and utensils magically puffed into existence with purple smoke and sparkles.

Oh... This place was lovely. It served burgers? He thought he stepped into a fairy tale, but it was just a burger joint. Manta Carlos sure had its oddities. Felix covered his mouth and giggled at the small fae girl at the desk, not mocking, more endeared. He wiggled his fingers in a wave at her while still staying close to Rafa. "H-hi."

Felix gasped a little as the utensils appeared. Huh! That was precious. He thought, idly, that if he were to be enslaved by fae, he wouldn't mind so much if everything looked at this. He looked at the menus curiously. Oh, there were burgers alright, but he wasn't what to feel about bright pink buns with neon green patties. "Chef's Choice", it said.

"This place is really lovely, Rafa. Thanks for convincing me to go here. I think I'll be stopping by here more often." He flipped through the menu a bit, then peered at his companion. "Um, what do usually have here? They're all so... brightly colored!"
