Dim lights bled through classroom windows as nocturnal students awaited relief. Even with the moon as just a thin crescent, the starry night sky gave off enough light to see by. It was enough for some kids to play soccer together in a nearby sports field; Gany and Kon would try to stay clear of that area, but they had plenty of open space to work with here.

Gany had told Kon about his new trick, and Kon wanted to experience it firsthand. So Gany led him out here.

"This should be a good spot," he said. And then he hesitated before telling Kon what to do, or how this should work.

"...What'd you mean earlier, when you said you're not good with flying?"

Kon was nervous. Kon was excited. He was... nervouscited. A smile was firmly set in his face as he was led by Ganymade. When they stopped, he started fidgeting in place. The idea of flying scared the crap out of him. He trusted Gany, but he was still learning his powers. At the same time, Kon had a bit of a daredevil side to him. He wanted to overcome another fear this island gave him.

Kon's nervousness only worsened when Gany showed hesitance. This was normal. He was a child learning a new skill and was about to show it off to an adult he trusted. Though, there was a thought in the back of Kon's mind that during the test, he'd get hurt in the process. Probably best to numb his pain before they do anything.

"Ah, well, I had an accident happen a while back. Almost had a cyclist hit me until a man flew me out of the way. He wasn't, uh, under full control of his powers, and we ended up having a rough landing."

"Oh... I'm sorry that happened." That must have been scary. But Kon still wanted to do this, so...

"This time it will be way better." He smiled. "Just, hold on to my hand, and don't panic. And it should be fine." He'd hold his hand out for Kon to grab.

The world turned blurry and dreamlike. The soccer game near them started to sound muffled, but echoey. And everything would feel light.

Kon and Gany could still see each other and feel each other's hands. Gany floated up a few feet off the ground, and Kon would start floating too. They were eye-level with each other now, and Gany was watching for Kon's reaction.

"Is it anything like you expected? ...Can you hear me?" Kon would be able to hear his voice, but only barely. It was quieter than it should have been, and there was a staticy quality to it.

Kon reassured Ganymede that he was okay. It was scary, but Kon was much more prepared now. Ganymede looked confident he could do a better job anyhow. He actually had experience with doing this... whatever his power was, by himself.

When his sight blurred, Kon visibly tensed. He didn't like things messing with his head. He didn't like how the kids playing soccer were hard to see and everything sounded like an echo. It was like being in one of those dreams where he was nearly lucid, but not lucid enough to control anything.

But when Gany spoke to him, he remembered this wasn't a dream. He was in control.

"I can hear..." What the fuck was up with his voice? He hoped that, despite Ganymede sounding weird, he himself wouldn't have changed. "I can hear you... This is... nothing like I expected. Ah, this is so weird. I need to keep holding you, right?"

Yeah, that did sound pretty weird. It was a different kind of weird than what Gany was used to. Gany had never talked to anyone else like this before. He also thought it was odd how everything else looked blurry, but Kon didn't.

Did Kon need to keep holding on to him? "I think so, yes." Gany was almost certain.

"So... Let's try moving around. I'll start slow." The two of them would begin actually flying now, a few feet off the ground, with Gany pulling Kon along. They were going at about 7 miles per hour, a small fraction of the speed Ganymede could manage like this, but still faster than he could usually run.

He would look back at Kon periodically, making sure he was still with him and still non-blurry.

Kon kept a good grip on Ganymede. Thankfully, he was much too weak to tightly hold onto Gany out of fear.

And despite that fear, he did the stupid thing and looked down to see how high up they were. Not too high, but much higher than he was used to. "Heh, ah, this is... This is kind of fun. In a completely terrifying way. Were you scared when you first tried this out?"

"Not really," he admitted. "But that's probably because, when the demon gave me this gift, it also gave me understanding. It's..." Ganymede had to stop for a second, so he could focus on making up an analogy. They floated a little higher. "Hmm... It's like how we aren't afraid when we hear a language we've never heard before, but we already know how to speak it. I knew it like an instinct."

He wondered how much of that story he told Kon. He knew that he mentioned it to him, and that he'd told the story to a few people of how he got this power.

In the corner of Kon's eye, he would notice that a soccer ball was hurtling straight towards his head. It had been kicked well over the net by one of the kids in that pickup game.

"That was smart," Kon replied, mildly jealous of how great of a start Gany was given. "I didn't think to ask for a perfect understanding of my powers. I only specified an easier way for me to understand. You know, with tons of research—"

There was a ball coming at him. Kon attempted to twist his body to dodge, but he never dodged anything while flying and holding onto a small boy. Instead of showing off his amazing cat-like agility, he flinched and let go of Gany, managing to avoid getting hit in the face.

The fall wasn't long, but hitting the ground roughly still wasn't pleasant. The numbness took a lot of his pain away, at least. He had tried to land on his feet, and he did, but his weak legs soon crumbled beneath him.

The quickness of everything left Kon mildly stunned. Then the embarrassment rolled in. The scenery around him was no longer blurry. To everyone else, he must have looked like he was dropped from the sky. To Gany, he made a stupid mistake and got himself hurt. So caught up in his embarrassment, Kon failed to notice he lost some inches of height.

Ganymede would disappear from Kon's sight as soon as he let go. The smaller catboy would reappear farther down the ball's path, reappearing in the perfect spot for the ball to hit him in the chest, allowing him to catch it (and get knocked off his feet). Gany knew he couldn't do anything to stop Kon from getting hurt, but he could at least get the ball.

The catboy and the ball disappeared again, both reappearing moments later next to Kon. "Are you okay?" He could use his new tricj to take Kon to the nurse's office, or the hospital if he had to.

There was a bit of commotion around the soccer field, and one of the players came running over to them.

A part of him hoped that his mishap would have been ignored. Surely Kon wasn't the strangest thing out in the field. And then Gany popped up next to him. And then he saw one of the soccer players rushing over to check on him.

Kon stood up and wiped away some of the dirt that got on his pants and shirt. It was the best gesture he could think of to look like all of this was no big deal. All of that would have been more convincing if not for how his ears fell back and the way his tail swayed low in aggravation. "Sorry about that. Yeah, I'm okay. Just a few scratches here and there... and clothes that need to be washed later. Are you okay?"
