The wind blew through Nessie's fiery red hair as she stood on the beach's shoreline, the waves lapping at her ankles. She held a medium-sized sketchbook in her hand, and wore a small dark blue smock over her t-shirt and shorts with some pieces of pastel chalk in the pockets of varying shades. She scribbled quietly, looking out at the sun as it set over the ocean and then filling in the colors with the chalks, using her fingers to blend them in. She loved to draw sunsets...or sunrises. Something about the way the colors mixed in the sky made her love them.

It was peaceful here. Nessie came along the beach often to do her artwork, whether it was for inspiration or just for some peace and quiet. Occasionally, she'd hear the soft chattering of a couple or a family as they walked by on the sand behind her, but it was mostly just quiet among the sound of the waves licking the sand. She fished a purple piece of chalk from the pocket of her smock and looked out across the sparkling sea before adding some light detailing work to her drawing. It was coming along nicely. She used the side of her hand to gently smooth the purple into the horizon and smiled to herself.

This hour was the golden hour for a photographer like Kylar. The best time for landscape pictures and Kylar rarely if ever passed up the opportunity, unless he had class.

He'd been walking along the beach, taking pictures of the sunrise with his high tech camera, sometimes stopping and finding a better vantage point. As always, he took several pictures of everything, to increase his chances of getting the perfect picture.

When he saw the redheaded girl on the sand, right where waves broke against sand, her bright hair like fire in the wind, Kylar was tempted just to take a picture. But that wasn't right. He wasn't big on moral high grounds, but when it came to photography, Kylar played by the rules.

He approached her slowly. "Hey there. Mind if I take your picture like that? Don't turn around yet; I don't want it to be messed up."

By way of explanation, he went on. "I'm a photography student at the school here. Trying to collect some great pieces for my portfolio. Always gotta ask before you take someone's picture."

Nessie nearly dropped her sketchpad as someone approached her from behind and asked if he could take her photograph. She clutched the paper tightly to make sure it didn't go anywhere and calmed her pulse, which had suddenly picked up with the rush of adrenaline that came from being startled. He wanted to take her picture...? As a model, Nessie was used to posing for photographers and having pictures taken of her.

Turning her head a little to look out of the corner of her eye at the other redhead that stood behind her, she nodded slowly. She supposed she didn't have a problem with that. He hadn't disturbed her work too much...Nessie switched pastel chalks and turned back to her art, adding more orange to the skyline as she looked between the sketchpad and the horizon that stretched beautifully before her.

The camera barely made a sound as Kylar took several pictures, at one point zooming closer to her painting. He had to suppress the urge to say 'good girl.' All in all, it was a winning situation.

He took a moment to look at the series of pictures and was happy to find that most of them had come out beautifully. He breathed out a content sigh and let the camera rest on the strap held around his neck before focusing on Nessie again.

"Sorry about that, I suppose I should introduce myself, but you seem busy. Couldn't pass up the opportunity to snap a few shots of you outlined by the light and all that jazz.

"One more question. You don't mind me adding a few of these beauties to my portfolio, do you? I'm a photography student, for the record."

Nessie had finished her drawing and pulled a small aerosol can from the pocket of her smock, spraying its contents over the page to set the pastels and keep them from smudging, when she heard the camera stop clicking for a while. She turned around from where she stood at the water's edge and watched him as he spoke to her.

A photography student. It made sense now. She shook her head in response to his question - she didn't mind at all. It was good to help others out from time to time...though it would typically mean that they would end up in some sort of debt to her, as she now considered him to be. Nessie flipped to a fresh page in her sketchbook and found a pencil in her smock pockets. I'm Vanessa, she wrote. I don't speak. You can call me Nessie if you like. She flipped the page over and held it out to him so he could read it.

Kylar didn't take the book when she offered it to him to read. Instead, he leaned forward and read from where he was, then gave her a sly little grin.

"I'm a telepath," he said by way of explanation before continuing in that foxish tone of voice, "and I don't owe you anything unless you make a barter. Which you didn't. A lesson to be learned for you here. Make them work for it."

He laughed and shut his camera off to give her his full attention. He'd look at the photos in more detail later, but for now, Kylar had a bit of exciting company he'd much rather turn his attentions too.

"The name is Kylar Defan. It's nice to meet you, Nessie -- cute name, by the way. You new? Either you don't go to college, and you're older than you seem, or you're new, but I'm betting on new. I have a good nose for that sort of thing."

And she smelled of sea and Fae, and something salty like fish and seaweed. Maybe less fish, more mammal -- dolphin, whale, seals, etc.

Nessie raised an eyebrow at him as he mentioned bartering and how she hadn't asked for anything in return. An interesting notion, to be sure, but if she really wanted something from him, she would get it. Right now, he didn't have much of anything that she wanted, though.

The boy introduced himself as Kylar. Nessie took the time to look him over. He was...not unattractive, she determined, though his guess of her being new to the island was far off. She smiled a little in amusement and shook her head at him, then started to write before she realized that he could just read her thoughts...she would have to be careful around this one. I have been here for a long time, she told him. Not that she needed to share exactly how long, of course. She was much older than she looked, that was for sure. She had walked this earth for more than a century, had seen the changing of the times, decades turning over like the leaves of fall, quickly dying and giving way to the new years as they came and went.

Kylar grinned. Over the course of years, telepathy had always been his most useful ability. He was surprised to learn not many other people seemed to have it here. And those that did, they chose not to use it.

He took a moment to investigate her before walking loosely around her with the grace of a large predator. He hummed in amusement himself.

"Okay. Not new then. Not a student? Even some of the older species decide to take up college of the final year of highschool." His smile was thin when he stopped in front of her, closer than he had been before.

Kylar gave a low whistle. "You got some numbers on you, huh? Impressive. Personally, I'm just my age, but immortals around here are like three leaf clovers. Everyone thinks they're special, but they're a dime a dozen. No offense."

Nessie watched him with caution as he looked her over and then circled her, keeping her eyes on him at all times. She still wasn't sure what he was, but there was something...almost unsettling about him that made her instincts go on high alert. She wasn't too threatened...her true form was large enough that she could defend herself should she need to, and then there was always her power.

I have an art degree from the college, but it is something I obtained a while ago, she told him. Nessie found herself instinctively leaning away from him, if only slightly, not quite comfortable with how close he was getting to her after that weird predatory stalk he'd just performed, but at least...he was rather good-looking, and Nessie could appreciate a predator when she saw one, she knew the beauty of it.

She raised an eyebrow at his comment on immortals and shrugged. I don't find myself to be anything special, if that's what you're implying. He'd said 'no offense' but she couldn't help but feel a little offended by his observations. Sure, she knew that there were probably plenty of older creatures on this island, even older than she was. That didn't mean that she wasn't unique in her own ways, though. Was he trying to intimidate her? Or was he just inherently rude?

"Of course not," he told her. "I'm not implying anything. My statement was a blunt one. Observations I've made on my time here. Age is a number, but most immortals think it inherently makes them better when in reality all it means is they can't or haven't died."

Kylar had decided to drop the entire pretense that her thoughts were her own and not just the things she thought directly at him. His smile grew in mirth, but not size.

"Ah, I see. I may be inherently rude. I'm very blunt, but I was not at all implying you were unimpressive or unique in your own right. Why would I waste my time on something I didn't feel was worth it? No. You are special, but not because of your age or your species."

Kylar paused in thought and looked away from her to where the sky met the sea in a brilliant dance of colors. His eyes lost the warmth his smile still contained. That was until his gaze returned to hers.

"I'm a Crocotta, dear. A rare breed. Most people think we are werewolves, which is silly as we look nothing like wolves but what are you going to do."
