Gripping the young woman's hand with practiced firmness in hers, she greeted her with a warm and welcoming smile, while agreeing that this morning's encounter had been extremely auspicious for both. Verda had lifted her spirits considerably, made her reconsider getting a pet, and reminded her how bloody delicious the lemon squares here were.

"Well, you could call me that, but it's quite a mouthful," she pointed out good-naturedly. " I'm Zoraida Del Bosque, although most people just call me, Zora," she explained as she introduced herself.

"And you are, Verda, right?" Zora enquired politely as she peered at her name tag.

Verda shook Zoraida's hand with a renewed smile. She noted that Zora, while petite and perfectly put together, had a firm and commanding sort of handshake. She got the impression that this woman had a spine of steel. Marvelous. Impressive.

"Yes, Verda Combfoot at your service," she replied, "and yeah, my name means green and I'm red, I know. My family's got a weird sense of humor."

She mouthed 'Zoraida del Bosque' to herself, making sure her tongue wouldn't trip over the fancy name.

"I am glad to meet you, Zoraida. So, you've got relatives in the gardening club at the school?"

Zoraida had to laugh at Verda's comment about her family. She knew exactly how family could be.

"Your family sounds like they have a great sense of humor actually," she confessed as she took another bite of her almost finished lemon square.

"And yes, my aunt, Celeste, who is like my same age, or looks like it anyways..." she warned with a grin. "Is a witch with a penchant for being the perfect homemaker. She loves cooking, baking, gardening... even sewing. She loves anything to do with ..." here Zora struggled to find the word.

"With being a wife and mother, I guess," she said, settling on that because she knew what Celeste did was because she enjoyed making others happy and creating a home for those she loved. Something Zora admired, but knew she could never quite do. She enjoyed her career too much, and could not see ever giving it up.

"My son, Jeremiah, is also part of the club. He's a huge nature lover. And I am sure he will be thrilled to learn about your pets," she told Verda with a smile.

Verda listened politely to Zora's descriptions of her family members. It was the brightest she'd seen Zoraida's face get. She pushed down thoughts of her own family. Verda knew if she started talking about them too in depth she'd be fighting a wave of homesickness for the rest of her shift.

"Most family focused goddesses are called- what was it- stewards of hearth and home? That seems like a good phrase for your aunt," she offered.

Verda dug around in her apron pocket until she pulled out a little spiral bound paper notepad. A second later, she retrieved a pen with a large poofball on the end.

"Here's my number," she said as she wrote it out in a neat, rounded font across the hello-kitty patterned page. "So you can pass it on to them."

Verda ripped out the pink paper that now read [call Verda for a BEE-utiful time] and handed it over.

"I mean, it's not just for them, it's for you too, in case you ever want to chat when I'm off-shift? I work opening on weekdays, so. " Verda paused, suddenly worried that she sounded like she was hitting on her, and continued, "if you've ever got advice for a gal's first time in a big city, I could sure use it!"

Verda grinned, a bit awkwardly.

"Oh, thanks... " Zoraida said as she accepted the sheet of paper with Verda's number written on it. Looking the number over before she pocketed it, she smiled to herself when she saw the message.

"I will talk to Celeste and pass your number on to her," she promised as she met Verda's gaze and simply grinned at her awkward explanation. She then pulled a business card from her bag, and wrote two numbers on the back.

"Here's my work number," she said as she passed Verda an elegantly embossed business card that read, Zoraida Del Bosque, CEO of Woodland Imports. "And this," she explained as she turned the card over. "Is my private cell number, and that's Celeste's number."

"I will also talk to my son. I am sure he'd be delighted to help you with the bees," she informed her as she placed her wallet back along with Verda's note in her bag.

"Also, I'd really enjoy maybe going out sometime if you'd like," she offered as she tucked a piece of her hair behind an ear. "I could show you around the island, though I'm not sure I am up on all the hip happenin' places anymore, but, I do know where the nicest bistros are."

Verda took the business card and ran her thumb over it. It was a thick cardstock with a sleek finish, and the embossing was immensely classy. She tucked it away carefully in her apron pocket, and tried not to think to hard about the fact that she was casually chatting with a CEO. Jeebus crust, Zora was important and busy and shit! Heck!

That made it kind of sweet that Zoraida was interested in hanging out with her at all.

"Bistros sound good!" Verda said brightly, "I don't think I've ever been to one! They have fancy paninis and stuff, right? I'd love to see more of the island than my little corner of the school campus and the block I work on. I'm mostly free weekends and evenings, but I'm still shopping around for some classes so I can free up an afternoon if you give me a little advance notice."

The little silver bell above the door chimed, and Verda glanced over her shoulder to see a small group of businessmen walk in. Her coworker caught her eye from the register and did a little head-tilt.

"I should probably get back to work," Verda said apologetically, "those coffees won't make themselves!"

She stood from her seat and adjusted the hang of her apron, scooted the chair back in.

Hearing the bell ring, Zoraida looked at her watch when Verda mentioned getting back to work. It definitely was time for her to also be getting back to the office. She needed to make a few early morning calls.

"Of course," she said as she got to her feet, and put on her coat as laying a few bills on the table in the process. Enough to cover everything, lemon square included, as well as a nice tip.

"I'll talk to Celeste tonight, and call you tomorrow. We can then set something up for next week, maybe?!" she suggested as she picked up the carrot cake muffin and got ready to take her leave of Verda and the cafe.

"And it was really nice meeting you, Verda," she said as tucked her purse under her arm and made her way towards the door.

"Sounds good," Verda replied, and then waved as Zora made her way out the door. "It was nice meeting you too!" she called, and then cleared the table and wiped it down before hopping back behind the counter.

She had a bounce to her step and a swish to her tail, delighted that she'd made a new friend. She had a lead on placing her bees! She had someone who'd show her around! When she clocked out at 8:30, her coworkers laughed and shoved her out the door with an admonishment to stop humming.

The sky outside remained overcast and dreary, but Verda carried sunshine with her for the rest of the day.
