"I'm not a chosen one of anything except maybe what's keeping me ticking. Long story, but I don't mind saying if you're curious," Adelaida said as she mimicked the motions again, going through them one by one to ensure that she was doing it right. With each iteration, the motions became more and more fluid, more and more precise.

She started trying to deviate, and found that she could add in little motions, but that each attempt she made to add her own twists only made her sloppy. She could fit them in after some effort, though she quickly decided that with her limited knowledge of self-defense, it would likely just muddle the effectiveness of what she was taught. "Hmm. As I thought. I'm good with copying because of my old magic training and my memory, but my body can't keep up with my mind yet. I think you get what I mean. You ever have that?"

Adelaida paused from repeating the motions to take up a stance she picked up from something she watched. She did a few flashy punches, knowing full well they were likely impractical for anything other than showing off. As she did so, she asked, "Why'd you enter this line of work, if you don't mind me asking? For me, I'd probably only get into something like this if I really liked throwing hands."

"No it's alright, you don't have to tell me." Curious as she may be, Aliasse kept her mouth shut about about her history, so it wasn't fair for her to ask about Adelaida's, despite the latter expressing her disinterest about keeping it a secret. She continued to watch as Adelaida did some deviations, though Aliasse wasn't that good of an eye to see how effective those deviations would be without seeing another body being the victim of the motions. "Yes, I've gotten that feeling before. That's why sometimes you've got to rely on muscle memory. And why it usually takes a long time to be as good as the martial artists. I don't remember much about it, but I've watched a documentary that looked into martial artists and their inhuman reaction times." Adelaida may have grown bored as she took a break from mimicking the motions started shadow boxing instead. Then she asked why Aliasse got into this line of work. "Well, I've worked security in the Narrow Reality for a while before. And usually it's an uneventful job. Not a lot happens day to day, especially if I'm stationed somewhere not too important. And while I was working in the Academy, it let me adjust by having me do something I was already used to doing, and that just lead me to BlackThorn after I parted ways with the Academy. Not to mention free access to a gym. It's not all that bad."

Must be nice to be doing work one was comfortable with, Adelaida thought. For her, nothing came close to her old school of runic magic when it came to garnering her interest. She took up her current education, which she was close to completing, thinking of growing to love it, and yet it didn't happen.

More than anything, she wanted to regain what she'd lost. Not her family, not her estate, not even her soul - she just wanted to be able to do magic again. Everything else, she felt, would fall into place after.

She'd remained silent during this introspective, and she snapped out of it to return half-heartedly to the motions that Aliasse had demonstrated for her. It was obvious that her mind was elsewhere at the moment.

"I'm not gonna lie, I'm kind of jelly that you're so comfy and good with your job,"
she said while tripping an imaginary person and rapidly striking their nonexistent face. "I can't do the one thing I obsessed over anymore, and while I'm sharp enough that I can probably make other things work for me, it's just not as... cool. I think you probably get what I mean."

Aliasse noticed Adelaida being with her thoughts for a moment. And she didn't want to intrude in whatever it was she was thinking. Instead, Aliasse turned half way towards the horizon again, mostly so Adelaida would think that Aliasse didn't notice her drifting. "Yeah, I think I understand." Though Aliasse was happy that she didn't have to do what she had done before. At least to the extent that she was doing it for. Still, there was something she couldn't shake from her mind. "I think it's only natural to miss something you've enjoyed that way. I guess it's akin to the phrase, 'you never forget your first love'."

"My first love, huh... If we're calling it that, then I'm the guy who can't move on and calls his ex at 3 in the morning," Adelaida joked. There was a hint of bitterness there in her voice - subtle, but present. She'd struggled to reconcile at times just how well-adjusted she was with the losses she'd taken, except specifically magic. Enough to make her think there was something off in her head.

"It is what it is, I guess," she said with a sigh, continuing with the motions.

Halfway through another iteration of her self-defense lessons, Adelaida got an idea. "Ooh, speaking of. You ever fall in love? See, I've tried falling myself but I don't know, it never clicked. Makes me think I'm weird for finding people like you cute but not actually falling in love like my friends do."

A guy who can't move on and calls his ex at 3 in the morning. She had one of them before. But unlike the horror stories she'd hear from others, she liked hearing from her. In truth, at the time, she hadn't moved on either. Aliasse felt something welling up inside her at the mention of love. Nothing sappy, but she had a certain way of looking at love. "I did fall in love a few times. A guy, a girl, another guy, the same girl," her head cocked to each side as she listed them. "Certain things just made it hard to avoid. But let me ease your mind. Even by a bit. Love is... not something as simple as seeing 'the one', having your heart flutter, and living happy ever after. It's not like the movies. When people say they fell in love, they usually mean the classic heart flutter and wanting to get close to someone they like. "Most of the time that's just infatuation. The result of generations of evolution wiring our instincts to pick out a mate. Often times, when our brains get stimulated the same way over and over again, people start falling out of love and think the magic is gone and usually lead to a break up, if their personality differences doesn't do it first. When you see old couples sitting at the bench, smiling just by being with each other, that's love. When hormones stop spurring you on, and you still stay together because you truly enjoy each other's company, that's where its at." All this time she was looking out to the horizon. And only after she gone on about her speech did she turn towards Adelaida with a chuckle. "Sounds wise and sagey, doesn't it? I got that from the Internet." She scratched the back of her neck and giggled. "And you know, I like this answer to that age old question of 'what is love'. A lot more than abstract feelings and saying its indescribable unless you felt it before."

Adelaida found herself wishing she hadn't asked the question. She hadn't expected such a long and detailed answer, considering how Aliasse had been dodging questions about her past. There wasn't anything wrong about what she'd said, and a lot of it mirrored Adelaida's own views. It was just... uncomfortable to be reminded that she never experienced that emotion.

"Guess... I haven't experienced love ever then," she said quietly. "That's... sad?"

She thought back to all her interactions with people, now that the floodgates had opened up. She thought of how few of them stuck, even with her efforts to make real connections. Few lasted any length of time, and she'd ended up getting into a cycle of making more and more physical bonds than any emotional connections.

She eyed Aliasse. Would she be another person that Adelaida would know only briefly?

"Hmm. It appears I haven't ever been in love or been loved. Cause I don't really remember even my family being that close with me. Maybe that's why..."

Adelaida paused.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting such a reasonable answer,"
she said dryly. "Sounds nice to be in love."

Perhaps the wound was deeper than Aliasse had expected it to be. Or maybe she thought her words would have been brushed off or taken with humor. But it seemed that wasn't the case. Emotions were hard things to read. "It does sound like it. But its nothing to grow depressed over. But that's not me dismissing your feelings on the matter. All I'm trying to say is try not to get caught in that pitfall. There are other people who don't feel that 'click' with anyone, so it's not really a you problem." Ahh, what a mess. This was just a hard situation to handle. "Maybe you just haven't met someone you're particularly interested in?"

"Eh. It is what it is," Adelaida said, shrugging. Just like always, she would never come to a decent conclusion thinking of these matters herself. And she definitely had more control over her thoughts than that.

She did a few stretches, willing herself back into a positive mood as she'd done so many times before. She began copying other moves that she'd seen on TV to amuse herself, thinking of what a fortuitous meeting she'd had today.

"I'm not gonna lie, I've had tons of fun today, even though it was mostly just chit chat. I like chit chat, and you're pretty interesting. Easy on the eyes too," she said, smiling again.

"Yeah, you mentioned that already," she said, smiling back. "I've had a fun evening myself. Been a good while since I've had a chat lasting this long. Do you have a phone? I still owe you for fishing me out of the water." Aliasse wasn't going to let a favor be forgotten, no matter how small it'd be. It wasn't about good things to do or social expectation, but more out of principle.
