Life wasn't particularly exciting in Adelaida's job. It was quiet, and exactly why she picked it to begin with. It was just the right amount of stress to keep the voices quiet, and gave her just enough money to feel like she was accomplishing something.

Even though she really didn't need the money, and could possibly make more just by outsourcing her knowledge of magic.

"Nothing exciting out in my line of work, just as I want it. At most we get a few junkies at 3 AM thinking no one in the staff has caught on that their 'quiet' conversation's a drug deal. We know, we just don't get paid enough to risk our necks dealing with 'em."

Adelaida thought for a moment, and then stood up, dusting herself free of beach sand. "Actually, I've got an idea. I can defend myself with fire but that's usually lethal, so you mind teaching me something basic that won't get me fired?"

Aliasse couldn't blame her, it was almost never worth it to stick your head into someone's business especially if those people were involved in drugs. It was just hard to gauge how those people react. She turned towards Adelaida when she stood up and talked about an idea: teach her some basic defense. That was something Aliasse could do. She pulled herself up and dusted her butt for sand. "Alright, I can do that." Aliasse raised a finger. "We'll go over the basics. First rule: Avoid fights. If you're just getting mugged, it's better to hand over your wallet than risk steel in your lungs. Especially true if the mugger has a gun. I know, it sounds lame, but for the purpose of this lesson, assume you're on the same level, but you're on the back foot here. The mugger's on the offensive, and you have no clue what they're capable of. Assume they can kill you. Self-defense is about self-preservation first and foremost. Heroics often sees you getting into a lot of trouble, so avoid it if you can. You got all that?"

Well, that wasn't very interesting. Adelaida already knew that running was typically the best option, but she also knew that she could play a little friskier because of her regeneration. And it was more interesting to try some sort of weird moves.

"I get it, it's my default option to just walk out. Did that when some drunk tried it. But I wanna know the cool stuff, because I regen enough and have enough safety nets to make 'em worthwhile, I feel."

She took up a stance that likely wasn't all that accurate. After all, her only knowledge of martial arts came from assorted media. She'd been practicing some flashy moves from a fighting series on a clothing mannequin that she'd taken home from the trash and cleaned up in her spare time.

"Besides, I'm pretty decent with my hands cause of all the magic I used to be able to do," she said, stretching out her limbs. They weren't too out of shape, but she did have some degree of fitness stemming from physical activities in attempts to keep the voices quiet. Just enough to let her put some dents in the mannequin.

Aliasse shrugged and rubbed the back of her head. "Okay, since you're already applying that rule, we can move on to the 'cool' stuff." She picked up the bottle and held it out to Adelaida. "Here, pretend this is a knife and throw any kind of stab at me. And don't worry, I'm not going to go all out and knock you down." She wasn't in any kind of stance. Despite her form betraying a hint of militaristic discipline, she looked like anyone just waiting for the bus.

Adelaida played with the bottle for a little bit with a smile, juggling it. "Oh, by all means, go all out. I'll heal it off anyway, and it'll be good for learning."

She stopped the juggling, thinking excitedly of what moves she would be subjected to. It was going to be good, she thought. Painful for a bit, but good and interesting.

She readied the bottle, taking up as good of a stance as she knew how to. "I'll be going in three... two... one... now," she said, throwing a powerful but wild stab with the blunt bottle, fully expecting to be countered with great skill.

"Well, if you insist," Aliasse cracked a smile, waiting for the attack, which Adelaida helpfully counted down to. There were plenty of ways to disarm and restrain an attacker safely, but there were also ways she could reliably knock someone out. It was too dangerous for her purposes, so that was off the table. However, she didn't want to throw her to the ground, not until she taught her how to properly fall or there could be some injuries, which she didn't want to cause after being rescued. As the bottle went in, Aliasse, in a swift motion, almost scrambling, stepped to the side, away from the thrust while putting her outer foot forward while the hand closest to the knife made a grab at Adelaida's wrist, putting a strong amount of pressure to keep the wrist from moving and kept the wrist pinned to her side. Meanwhile she'd thrust her opposing arm towards Adelaida, Aliasse's own wrist pushing against Adelaida's neck. The knee on the leg she put forward would then go to brace against Adelaida's forward thigh, while Aliasse rotated to keep the slightly larger woman off balance, but then she quickly reset the balance and went on to explain. "From here, I could have used the rotational force to keep you unbalanced and push you to the ground. I could keep your wrist pinned to my side and possibly cause it to dislocate. Then I could run. If I feel like I can't outrun you even with a head start, I could also knee your thigh while I rotated or while I tripped you so running will be uncomfortable. Preferably, I'd do all this before my attacker could realize they still had a free arm."

Adelaida went into the offensive fully expecting to get an arm broken, and was visibly disappointed when Aliasse stopped short of throwing her to the ground. "Weird. Normally people take the chance if someone says 'go all out.'"

She repeated the motion as best she could in the air, taking a few attempts before replicating it right. While she was good with her hands, her experience with actual hand-to-hand combat and self-defense was limited to practicing weird punches on junk in her house.

Her initial attempts were clumsy, gradually becoming smoother. Nowhere near the ease and precision that Aliasse showed, but enough to "pass." "Hmm. I think I'll need to see it again. And do feel free to follow through."

A moment after an attempt to replicate the motion, she took up her stance again, and went for another swing.

Aliasse could read the disappointment in Adelaida's face, so when she asked to go all out, Aliasse decided that she could do that. "Very well, if you're sure about this. I hope you know how to fall over properly." Adelaida replicated the movements as best as she could, but Aliasse wondered if she got the footwork and weight shifts right. A mistake there when she's being the one attacked could easily lead to her being the one off balance. She waited until Adelaida went for another swing. This time, with the intention of following through, Aliasse's movement were faster, to make use of as much momentum from Adelaida as she could. The motions were altered. Before, she slowed down so she could stop herself without injuring Adelaida, but going that slow and following with the throw would lead to an injury. And she didn't want that to happen unnecessarily. To an onlooker, it would look like Aliasse just shoved Adelaida down in one motion. Adelaida would feel the same pressures Aliasse demonstrated before she stopped at the rotation. With the follow-through, Aliasse used her knee on Adelaida's thigh as a brace for her upper body to twist and push Adelaida with her momentum to land with her back onto the sand. At the last moments, Aliasse gave Adelaida's wrist a stronger squeeze and a twist to force the muscles on her hands to ease the grip on the bottle, allowing Aliasse to knock it away. "How was that?"

"Cool. Really cool," Adelaida said, laid out on the sand.

On the way down, Adelaida observed everything. She took in the sights as best she could, excitedly making mental notes about everything she did right, and everything she did wrong.

"You're a really nice person. I've never seen anyone else try so hard not to injure someone after being told they could," she said, lying on the ground without the bottle. "Fairly sure you could break all my bones without going all out too."

She stayed laid down on the sand a bit, keeping her eye on Aliasse. It was a welcome sight, and she smiled at the fact that she was getting some actual training on something that had held her fascination for a while.

When she stood back up, she attempted the motions again. This time, it was more complete - she'd noticed a lack of step-in from her previous attempts, and she noted the feel of Aliasse's knee on her leg, trying as best she could to perform it herself. She did the motions clumsily, and gradually worked her way to proper replication. After all... after learning such difficult magic and losing it, a few stances and shifts would hardly be insurmountable.

"Well, that's kind of you to say." She wasn't wrong about the added effort of ensuring Adelaida wasn't injured. Though Aliasse was surprised that she even noticed it. "I doubt it. Bones are surprisingly hard to break, and arm bones are usually broken when someone tries to catch themselves when being thrown. Or they try to block a kick without the correct stance or support. Its... not a pleasant sight. That's why I hoped you knew how to fall properly." Aliasse watched Adelaida mimicking the motions, and the more she watched her, the more apparent that Adelaida wasn't just trying to copy something she saw on TV, and that her positioning slowly got a closer and closer approximation. "You're eerily good at mirroring," Aliasse commented with a chuckle, "Are you secretly a 'Chosen One' of Kung Fu?"
