The ocean around Manta Carlos was warmer than in Santa Cruz. Common misconception, but the water off of the California coast is actually cold as hell. Manta Carlos was farther north but also had a smaller landmass, and the currents brought up warm water from the equator. In the fall it still meant wetsuit-worthy temperatures, but it was pretty toasty compared to what Simon was used to all year-round.

Back home this had been one of the best things he found to keep his demon quiet. Who would have thought that waves flying at his face would turn out to be a meditative technique? Surfing was one of the only normal things that was constant in his life. One of the prerequisites for Simon moving to the island was that there had to be easy access to surfable waves. Luckily, Manta Carlos had that in spades.

Simon had been eyeing this particular stretch of coast for a few days-- he usually went up the street to a pointbreak closer to the road, but he'd passed by this break and watched a few beautiful rights roll by and figured it was a wave worth trying. So here he was, watching the ocean slip away from high tide to low tide, ready for a sunset session.

A few people were strolling around the beach for the view of the sinking sun. Simon sat on the sand with his board, bar of wax in one hand, raising the bumps on its surface with every passing stroke. He had yet to meet another surfer around, but he was always happy to strike up a conversation with curious beachgoers.

Blythe walked on the sand of the beach as she stared into the ocean. The wind blew her purple hair back. Sadness in her eyes which seems rare since she was normally always smiling and happy. But truth be told she was rather lonely. Yes, she had Terrance and Sekai but she missed her home. Her father and mother told her it wasn't safe and she needed to stay away from getting wet because that means she would be useless on land and a easy target.

She started to sing
"Flocking to the sea
Crowds of people wait for me
Sea gulls scavenge
Steal ice cream
Worries vanish
Within my dream

I left my soul there,
Down by the sea
I lost control here
Living free

Fishing boats sail past the shore
No singing may-day any more
The sun is shining
The Water's clear
Just you and I walk along the peir

I left my soul there,
Down by the sea
I lost control here
Living free

A cool breeze flows but mind the wasp
Some get stung it's worth the cost
I'd love to stay
The city calls me home
More hassles fuss and lies on the phone

I left my soul there,
Down by the sea
I lost control here
Living free

I left my soul there,
Down by the sea
I lost control with you,
And living, living,
And I, living, by the sea"

Her eyes closed not really paying attention if she put magic or not in it since she was part siren. She started to move and dance a little as she sang. Tears came down her cheek.

At first, Simon thought he was imagining a melody-- played on the mental radio wave that was also responsible for songs getting stuck in your head. He kept working on the board, but the music kept going, and got louder, and finally he looked up and noticed that it wasn't in his head at all.

The girl singing on the beach had a nice voice. He himself wasn't too good a singer unless he'd had a few beers and went to karaoke night, but then it was not skill so much as liquid enthusiasm that made his performance bearable. Maybe even charming. Otherwise? Simon wasn't tone-deaf, but he sure as hell wasn't Freddie Mercury.

He didn't notice the girl crying until she got a little closer. A telltale glint of light in the evening sun was the tip off. The more he looked, the more Simon noticed that she seemed really upset.

He stood and brushed some sand off of the knees of his wetsuit, picking the board up and tucking it under his arm. She wasn't too far off, and was close to where the whitewater broke anyway, so he'd have to pass her no matter what to get into the ocean. Might as well check in, right?

He jogged towards the sea and stopped a few feet away, careful to put a respectful amount of personal space between them.

"Hey, uh, are you okay?"

The purple hair girl jumped and looked at the male she dried her tears and smiled at him. Is she okay she heard him asked she walked up to him so he would be closer and they wouldn't have to yell. "Just a little home sick. But thank you very much for asking." She said the waves came close to her bear feet and blythe backed up and feel on her ass. " no no no can't get wet." She said mainly to herself the. To him the fact she had gills on her side so she didn't really where any two piece clothing. "My name is Blythe Solcas." She said smiling at him hiding her pain through the smiles.
