But How Hard Can I Go, Though?

Rory's biggest challenge was looking for something new to focus on. Back before she was Adrastia that was college and then it was superheroing. Well, she couldn't do that anymore so now Rory had to have something else. If she didn't find something else she'd go fucking insane and never drag herself out of this damned depression.

That was what led Lorelai to sit Angelo (her new caretaker, she guessed) down after school one day and ply him with questions about what it took to be a police officer here and how much he actually got to do, or fight. Was it all busy work? All talking? And how much red tape was there anyway?

She was customarily aggressive about her prodding, but then, would anyone expect Rory to be anything but aggressive in any given pursuit?

"So," she said finally, "if you had to sell being a cop to me, how would you do it? Would you do it at all? Why? Or why not?"

Christ, it was like a fucking interview.

Angelo would have preferred the term guardian, no doubt in small part because that was what was on the paperwork. He was the legal guardian of Jude, Janelle, and now Rory, and he didn't consider himself the father of any of them. That was just... no.

"You're going to make me do the elevator pitch?" Angelo said, kicking his feet up as he leaned back in his chair. An interview. Christ. He hadn't expected this. 'Tell me why being a cop is cool', she'd more or less said.

"It's a chance to make things better in the community. To save people. And sometimes it's hard--there's paperwork for sure--but then you pull some crying kid out of a disaster and everything's good in the world."

He was thinking of someone, although Rory wouldn't know who.

That was a pretty good pitch. It was the same thing she had been doing as a superhero. Mostly for the people with some PR thrown in. Rory still struggled to determine if she enjoyed the adrenaline rush or the helping people part more. She didn't know. All she knew was she couldn't live without this sort of thing. It was an intrinsic part of who she was.

She set her hands on the table and nodded. It didn't sound so terrible when Angelo put it that way. Maybe Lorelai had been thinking about the cops all wrong. Maybe.

"That sounds a lot like what I was doing minus the paperwork. Not that paperwork is an issue for me."

She tapped her chin, relaxing (to the best of her ability) against the back of the chair. "I think I could work toward something like that. Better than being an arena fighter. Or a college professor or something.

"Got any stories you're willing to share with a starry-eyed pupil?"

"Jude gave me the basic rundown of what you can do before you even got here, and honestly? Arena's not a lot of good. Lots of people head there because they're used to fighting. They're used to being the biggest fish in their particular barrel, and then they hop over to Manta Carlos and get their ass handed to them. Happens constantly. Your powers sound neat, and you'd do amazing in the narrow reality, but here? You're dealing with gods, sometimes. Arena fighting really only works out for the absolute best to the best, and you need to know how to make a show of it."

People forgot that, and then they all ended up flat on their back in the end.

"Did Jude tell you about the New Years stuff?"

"Yeah, that's what I figured. Besides," Rory shrugged, "I was never one of the big fighters even back home. I was more of a.... delegator."

When Angelo asked about the New Years Party, that sparked some interest. Jude had mentioned it briefly once but Rory couldn't remember Jude ever going []into[/i] it. She shook her head and leaned forward over the table to hear better.

"No, he didn't. Why, what happened?"

Oh boy, that was a story.

"So, basically, there was a great big gala a ton of people got invited to, in order to show off this really fancy diamond. Only then, right as she was showing it off, someone sprung up an anti-power barrier over the whole mansion and sealed us in. Big hostage situation, gang of werewolves running around, people getting shot, the whole deal. Lots of scared people, but it did get me promoted, because I stared down a werewolf right at the end while it was charging me and the damn thing was so intimidated it stopped and turned back."

Angelo looked pretty pleased with himself, unable to keep the smile off his face.

"At the time the whole thing was terrifying, but in the end we got out pretty well off."

"Holy shit. You stared the dude down hard enough he backed off?" Rory laughed, clear awe in the expression she wore and the way she tried to lean even closer. This dude was a serious badass!

"That sounds like something I would do..." She said after some thought. "I hope everyone was okay? It's weird to think this place has some mass way of turning off powers. My group and I dealt with some things like that, but it wasn't as available back in our home dimension as it seems to be here.

"We just had this scary prison called 'The Birdcage.'"

"I don't think Jude's really grown into it," Angelo said, "but I can be a pretty angry guy if you rile me up. Something like that, putting so many people at risk? No, there was no way I wasn't going to be mad. We did manage to sort everything out--turned out that the owner of the diamond had scammed them and ran off and all that--but we managed to get things under control. The only people who ended up dying were the owner and her family, and that was only because their butler turned the home's security on them. I got the werewolves to surrender, and all the hostages made it out. We busted like... six, seven people in connection to the whole powers-turning-off-fiasco."

The Birdcage sounded... well, maybe not as scary as it probably should have.

"What was it like? We've got a prison of sorts, but it's... pretty different from narrow reality prisons."

What was it like? Rory wished she knew. She'd never wanted to send people there because... well, it sounded terrible. What kind of place could the Birdcage have been that no one knew what was going on inside? Or no one was willing to say?

She drummed her fingers on the table. "Jude's dad was pretty scary, but his anger was the cold kind. Jude... Jude has something in him like that, maybe just not as fine-tuned.

"As for the Birdcage. No one really knew. No one ever got out once they went in and there was never any information about what was happening on the inside. It was a death sentence, but worse. And metahumans went there for pretty much any crime they committed. The first few you were dropped into a simple prison, especially if your powers were mild, like mine. But a few strikes in and..."

Lorelai winced.

"He doesn't talk about his dad much," Angelo said, a frown appearing on his face. "Generalities. Not really. It's..."

There was a pause. "I don't think he really wants to talk to me about him."

Angelo knew better than to push.

"That seems screwed up," Angelo said after she'd finished explaining the birdcage. "One-way ticket... The Islet's is pretty different. If anything, the general complaint is that they take it too nicely. You have people getting out who should be locked up far, far longer."
