Kelly stomped the snow off of her boots just outside the school. Slowly pulling her striped gloves off, Kelly walked inside. She'd just come from a walk outside, and she could still see her breath in the brittle air. Wow, it's cold! Nothing like California. she thought.
She stood over a heater in the floor for a few minutes to warm up. When she could feel her hands again, she walked into the cafeteria, unbuttoning her coat a tiny bit. She glanced around. A few tables had people sitting at them, but not many. After all, it wasn't really time for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It was a little past 4:00, not the time most people ate.
Inside the cafeteria, she went over to the drink table and ripped open a package of instant cocoa mix. She grabbed a mug from a stack on the table and poured the chocolate powder inside. She filled the mug with hot water and grabbed a spoon to stir it up.
Kelly carried the steaming mug over to a round table. She sat down by herself and sipped her drink slowly, holding her hands around it to warm them up. She wasn't used to the cold weather here... it never snowed where she'd come from. Here was the first time she'd seen it, aside from on TV shows or in movies.
