Happening sometime in early April

There was too much noise. Unwanted advice was bombarding them from all directions. Advice telling them to go back. To calm down. To rethink their decision. To not live in the Forbidden Forest.

When the voices stopped, Sela returned to the awake world. It took them a bit to remember where they were. Jao and Myst were awfully distracting. This time for sure Sela would remember to bring the two of them back without a reminder. But now that they were on their own, they could go back to appreciating the denseness of the trees, the strangeness of the flora and fauna...

How they were completely alone and could do whatever they wanted.

That should have made Sela joyful. More than joyful: ecstatic. Students weren't allowed to go to the Forbidden Forest. It had been days now and no one had come looking for Sela here. And if they did, what could they do? Sela would fly away, free, and leave them to be eaten by all the carnivorous animals and plants. Sela could be the carnivorous animal that eats them.

None of that made them feel better. This should have been similar to living in space. It wasn't. Not even a little. They were surrounded by people who they couldn't interact with. People who wouldn't understand what they were and would rather throw them back into school than let them be what they are. They also had to be aware of the dangers lurking in the forest, trying to figure out how to kill a being that wasn't killable. This was freedom, but it wasn't peace.

High above, Vindivir soared on his great wings, making lazy circles in the same ten mile area. He was doing what he'd been taught to do since the day he was born: hunt. His prey? The curious little bundle of light and noise whom until recently had been a regular patron in his library. He hadn't been concerned when they had failed to appear for a few days. Children were often impulsive and changed their habits on a whim. What had concerned him were the rumors that they would not be coming back, having disappeared into the Forbidden Forest.

Their disappearance had sent the old dragon into a rage, long-buried memories of his own son flooding to the surface. They hadn't found them yet?! Absolutely unacceptable! What was their job as school staff if not to protect the children?! That is why he flew, wings nearly flattening the old trees, fire flooding his veins in challenge to the very forces of nature themselves. He had been alive long enough to kill woolly mammoths! Nothing this paltry little garden could offer would stand between him and this wayward child! He would sooner slaughter every last living creature, and burn every last blade of grass to ash, than allow harm to come to them.

After an hour of searching, Vindivir's sharp eyes saw a flash of rainbow deep within the canopy...

Below, Sela would be able to feel the ground beneath their feet beginning to vibrate. A low rumble began to grow louder in the distance, turning steadily into a ear-splitting roar. As it came closer, what was once a vibration began to feel like a small earthquake. The ancient trees swayed as if made of rubber, and rocks that had existed since the creation of the planet crumbled like sand. Then, the sun went dark, replaced for just a split second by endless black. Then, it was gone, and just as soon as the chaos had started, it abruptly ended as the forest around them returned to its previous stasis.

Finally, the world shook violently one last time in a sudden explosion that sent flocks of birds rocketing skyward before settling down permanently.

A few minutes passed, and Sela could hear soft, yet confident footfalls coming closer. Whoever it was, they were human, and they weren't trying to sneak up on them.

Then, from behind a tree, materialized Vindivir, dressed from head to toe in an immaculate three-piece suit. Strapped across his back was no doubt the same two-handed sword which hung above his desk in the library. His hands were clasped loosely together in front, and those fiery, reptilian eyes looked upon Sela with cool neutrality. Neither angry, nor elated. He stayed quiet for a few seconds before his low baritone, marked by a cultured British accent.

"Good afternoon, Sela. How has your jaunt into the wilderness been? Uneventful, I hope?" Vindivir asked casually, eyes calmly scanning for threats. He knew that he could very easily spook them into running, and so kept his temper down. After all, it wasn't their fault. This was a blunder of the school's, making a child feel so isolated that their only recourse was to flee into a monster-infested forest.

The large wings above the trees forced Sela to quickly find a place to hide. The large dragon was almost certainly a person. The island wouldn't accept something that giant flying around potentially causing largescale trouble. If Sela stayed out of the way, they wouldn't be hurt. It was as simple as that.

A prey must have caught the dragon's attention, as some time after their appearance, a large roar sounded throughout the forest and the ground shook beneath Sela. Animals scurried away, and Sela caught a few plants retreating into the ground.

Sela kept close to the tree they were hiding in, their body pushing closer against the thick leaves when they heard footsteps approach.

Vindivir appeared. The head librarian they saw every once in a while whenever they took a trip there. Sela enjoyed his presence and often adopted their more child-like form when speaking to him. He seemed to be more jovial with children.

So why was he here?

"It's been plenty eventful," they replied with cautiousness. A firm frown was on their face at how Vinvidir spoke. This wasn't a jaunt, this was home. "How has your jaunt been?"

The ghost of a smile appeared on Vindivir's lips. He took in a deep breath and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

"Well, I should say that it's a bit colder than I'd like. Beautiful weather for a stroll, I admit. I'm afraid I'll have to polish these shoes again once I return home. What, may I ask, brings you this far from school grounds?" Vindivir asked in return. He needed to learn why Sela ran away before he could convince them to return. He had no illusions- where he would normally scoop a child up and walk back to the school grounds with them kicking and screaming, Sela would tolerate no such treatment. Sela would only return of their own free will.

"Your friends, it seems, are quite worried about you." Vindivir added conversationally, as if he were still talking about the weather.

Vinvidir was trying to be cordial and easy to speak to, Sela could tell, but all they felt was tenseness and discomfort. What discomforted them more were the worried "friends." What friends? Delaney was the first one that came to mind. Symlink was up there too. Did the Nap Club count?

"I don't care," they stated plainly, but not completely truthfully. They cared, but only in the sense of them wondering who considered them a friend if this was not a lie by Vinvidir. "I live here. Please go away. I've been taking care of myself. Your shoes will get dirtier if you remain."

Vindivir's smile was touched with bittersweet memory. Listening to Sela reminded him of a summer afternoon some four centuries ago, when his own son had "run away" into the woods after a disagreement that now seemed trivial. When he and Karavir had found their stubborn hatchling, he had spat puffs of fire at them and demanded that they simply "go away".

"Oh, you live here?" asked the old man, looking around and taking in the rather rough scenery. "Had I known, I would have brought a housewarming gift."

Vindivir sighed.

"Sela, why did you run away from school? I've no doubt that you are capable of caring for yourself, but why leave?"

Sela's eyes narrowed at Vinvidir. He was being stubborn, as expected, but they still hoped that he would go away if told to. On top of a branch, their body lost its shape for a few seconds before reforming into their seven-foot-two adult form. He was too close. They were ready to dart away if need be.

"The housewarming gift by an unwanted visitor wouldn't be accepted." Though they lacked the anatomy to make complicated expressions, their voice did more than enough to show their indignation.

"I don't want to be at the school. I don't need school. I have everything I need here."

Vindivir was silent for several, long moments. If he was intimidated by Sela's sudden growth spurt, he wasn't showing it.

"I suppose no one really needs school. When I was born, schools had yet to be invented. In the end, all living creatures need nothing more than a warm place to sleep and food to fill their bellies." he mused with a conceding shrug.

"But, if I may ask, just what is it about 'school' that makes you feel this way, Sela? I wish to help. School, though it be unnecessary, is hardly a bad thing." Asked Vindivir.

"I do not need a warm place to sleep." Nor did they really need food. They've gone without food for a long time before in exchange of many days and weeks of sleep. Something they would prefer to avoid when in such a dangerous area.

"It's unnecessary for me, so I don't want to be there. I don't like the rules. I don't like the people. I don't need to be prepared for the workforce. I'm happy here. I know the laws and can follow them. There's nothing to help."

Vindivir mulled over this information. Then, he signed and trudged over to a fallen log, where he dusted away some dirt and sat, his suit at odds with the untamed wilderness. The old man removed his scabbard from his back and set it on the grass behind him. He could empathize with how Sela felt. Once upon a time, he had lived as they did. Alone, with enough power to ensure he never needed to rely on anyone.

"Nobody alive likes rules, not even I. But they are important." Vindivir chuckled. "Very well, I can see that you need no help. I will leave you in peace. But first, I'd like to ask you something. Sela, has anyone ever taken advantage of you? Forced you into a situation that you didn't enjoy? Lied to you? Hurt you?"
