Smokey had tried to wait. They didn't want to reveal their great memory to Angelo too soon. There was the chance they'd be hit with a "How do you know you have a perfect memory if you just got the wish?" and then they would have been put in an awkward position. And realistically, there was still the chance now. Despite that, they gave in to their excitement and called up Angelo, telling them they were on their way to his house to tell him some great news about their life.

After arriving and having the door opened for them, Smokey jumped right into what had them so hyper. "Angelo! One of my friends, Riley, the un-undead one, gave me the wish he won from that game you helped with! I had to wait until it set in, but I really think it worked." Or it could be the placebo effect they feared, but they trusted the Twelve.

Some 'great news'. Angelo had very different opinions about 'great news about their life'. He was a teenager. He was dating someone. And he was fully expecting Smokey to gush about some new guy (or girl) they'd started dating.

I got a wish was not what he was expecting, and he paused for a moment before flagging Smokey over to the couch, flopping down himself.

"Power stuff, right?" He said, trying not to look amused. He already knew. He'd known the moment Smokey entered the room. But he was willing to play along anyway.

Rolling their eyes, Smokey replied with a sarcastic, but friendly, "Wow, how'd you know?". Then, they got nice and comfortable on the couch, resisting the urge to perch themself on it like a bird and instead sit like a normal person.

Now, time for the story.

"Riley came to me out of nowhere to give me his wish! I thought about it long and hard, and as you already know, now my memory is perfect, but I learned from you! So no issues with emotions. Though, now that I'm here, I feel bad for just bragging..." They genuinely did. Angelo already knew, and it's been enough time for him to probably be over it, but it was just exciting to talk about. He needed to share their happiness. "But that's not the only reason why. We could be great study buddies and learn things together, and I can keep up with you. We'd be one of the smartest duos out there."

There was, at least for a moment, a pang of guilt. Smokey was a creature intended to gather knowledge. That was their purpose, or at least part of it. Their entire species had been made for this.

But Angelo had been bonded to something that was more or less the incarnation of knowledge. It had changed him in ways he was still discovering. There was still, even with Giltenn gone, that gnawing desire to learn more. To go farther.

It had pushed him in ways he doubted he would have been pushed otherwise. To being able to consume knowledge at a voracious rate.

But saying I can read faster than you, I'm already miles ahead would be an awful thing to say. Smokey was excited, and he tried to be excited too, even if it probably didn't come across as entirely genuine. Angelo was equal parts great and terrible at lying. Hiding who his father was? Sure, he was among the best. Trying to lie to save his friends feelings?

Not so much.

"Don't feel bad for bragging," Angelo said. "Making a wish is always exciting. And getting new powers is exciting too. I guess you've already tested it?"

Something was off. Was it Smokey's anxiety or their attention to detail that Angelo look like he didn't care much for their new ability? He said not to feel bad for bragging, but shouldn't they were making him feel bad or they were being obnoxious? Smokey was aware they could be too much at times, even with their friends, but they tried to find that sweet spot where they weren't ruining other's enjoyment.

"Yeah!" they replied, forcing down their worries and focusing on the great news. "I focused on small stuff I don't usually care about and would forget quickly. Right after my wish was granted, I read a few chapters of a book about space and learned juggling. I still remember everything perfectly!"

Smokey giggled excitedly and leaned back into the couch. "I'm happy this will make learning so much easier. I'm still deciding what I want to do with this now."

"When I first started noticing," Angelo said, "I did that test they use. Putting objects on a tray and you memorize them for a few seconds, and then the tray gets taken away. Helped me realize the limitations on mine."

"There's a lot of perks," he added after a moment. "Reading books is a big thing. Consuming media. Once you start reading textbooks, it speeds up how much you can learn pretty quickly."

Smokey had wanted to ask what Angelo's limitations were. That was what they meant to ask. Instead, what came out was, "I was hoping you'd be more excited."

A hand went to cover their mouth as their eyes widened. "That sounded bad! I meant I was hoping this could be a chance for us to hang out more. For us to have more in common. I think we'd make a great team together. Don't you think?"

Was that coming on too strong? How were you supposed to be "subtle" about a crush when you were raised to be open about your emotions and knew no romance would come out of this? Smokey hoped to Ilada that Angelo would just assume they were being their weird, way-too-clingy self.

Ouch. That was guilt, right there in verbal form, because Smokey was right. He should have been more excited. They'd got a new shiny toy, and he wasn't even properly excited for them, and he couldn't even fake being properly excited for them.

He was being a shitty friend, and he knew it, dragging his fingers through his hair and exhaling hard through his nose as he tried to pull himself together.

"Sorry. I know this is going to sound like it's not you, it's me, but it is. I should be excited. It's nice to have someone else with a memory like mine." Aside from Caissa, who had never seemed to like him all that much. "I'm just... I guess.. distracted from education? From knowledge. For my own reasons." He wasn't sure if it would help to say it, but mercifully for Smokey Angelo didn't get any of the I have a crush vibe, just the Angelo you're being a shitty friend he was projecting onto them.

Smokey felt like they got kicked in the stomach. They weren't exactly sure why. Was it because they spoke about thinking? Or how they made Angelo feel bad? Or how now, of all times, he seemed to be "distracted from knowledge?" A flare of anger rose up in Smokey that died just as quickly. That had to be boosted by Roa. Mild annoyance was normal. That wasn't normal.

Times like these made Smokey wish they were more okay with lying to a close friend.

"Oh." Reel back that disappointment there. "That's fine! I'm happy to know you think it's nice, but if something's wrong, tell me. I'm your friend. I want us to share happiness, and if something's wrong, work together to fix it." And reel back that crush there too. "Just thought this was something we could both understand. Me, a creature made to gather knowledge. You a... a human who's just a giant nerd with giant nerd powers."

The whole thing was awkward. No way around it. He shifted uncomfortably on his seat, feeling like his emotional discomfort was giving him physical discomfort.

"It's not - it's not like that. It's not like there's something wrong. I just..."

He forced himself to breath, to try and flip it around and see it from Smokey's point of view. Oricenta liked honesty, didn't they? Was he doing more harm then good by trying to dance around the point?

"I was just expecting something different. Relationship stuff, or something like that. Not... power stuff. I set my expectations wrong, and then I didn't want to... to demean your accomplishment. A wish is a cool thing. It's a good thing. I just... couldn't figure out what to say without sounding like I was naysaying it, and I'm shit at lying about things like this." He didn't want to disappoint them, and he knew he already was.
