Call her a curious girl. After all, Siri was exactly that. The trait was so deeply ingrained in her nature that what began as a quick trip to the nearest convenience store eventually turned into a walk in the woods. Although she had been around the island for short while, there was still so much she realized she hadn't explored. The girl was spent most of her time at school, pawing through the library in between classes, clubs, homework, and about six hours of sleep.

As the days went by she did come to the conclusion that she needed to slow down at school and take some time to explore what freedoms her new home gave her. She could go out as she pleased, or so it felt even with the typical school restrictions and curfews. If she wanted ice cream before she began her homework, it was easy enough to obtain. And if she wanted to randomly take a walk in the foods as she ate the ice cream? That was alright, too.

Was she expecting to see more than trees? Perhaps. Siri would have been lying if she tried to say she wasn't hoping to see at least... something. Just something. There was no point in defining it, as the area had already proven itself to be full of the strange and unusual. Being a mere human among a sea of the supernatural was thrilling to say the least.

So, with some vague expectation, the teenager took her walk on a marked path with only her enchanted glasses to set her apart from the other passerbys. A water elemental, a shapeshifter she assumed, some other aura she didn't quite recognize... The more she wore her glasses, the easier it became to tell what was what when looking through them.

Then there was something bright, sudden, and odd. She watched in the direction it had appeared for a moment, half thinking that it was vanish as suddenly as it had appeared. But no, it appeared suddenly and it was just there now it seemed. There was no hesitance after she made the decision to track it down. With half-eaten ice cream still in hand, she ran off the path to whatever it was that made her lenses so confused.

It seemed like there had been years of preparation leading up to that exact moment, and in a way there had been. Years of planning. Years of designing the greatest magic their world had ever seen, the magic that would rip every last bit of mana from the earth itself.

On a more personal level, he'd spent weeks packing what anything and everything he'd thought he'd need, practicing every possible spell. Before the casting even started he'd laced his brand new staff with an automatic translation spell, several spells for resilience to keep this staff going longer than others, and even one that would keep the rain off him if he happened to come out where it was raining.

That was assuming he'd even come out on a world where it could rain. Realistically, there was a chance he would come out on a dead world, nothing but an empty husk. There might not even be any oxygen. He might pass over to another world and then immediately die, for all he knew.

It would be wrong to say he was praying to arrive some place safe, but he was certainly hoping.

That said, when it finally happened - when everything suddenly faded to black - Enelen felt like he'd accidentally left his stomach back on his own world. As he shifted, sliding between worlds, he felt like he was going to puke or maybe cry. Or maybe scream.

And then, just as quickly as it had started, it was over. With no visible transition, he was suddenly in a forest, surrounded by trees. Without even realizing it, he found he'd been holding his breath and took a deep, gasping breath, fingers clutching his staff so tightly it might have splintered if it hadn't been reinforced.

Air. Breathable air, at least close enough to his own world's air that he didn't feel any different. He took another deep breath, and all his worries melted away.

He was safe. He'd manage to land in a habitable world that didn't look all that different from his own. He didn't even have time to consider the possible risks, let alone the odds of it happening, when abruptly there was someone else there.

Surely no one could blame him for letting his guard down, but he actually let out a little yelp of surprise, wheeling around and nearly falling over. But what he was looking at wasn't a monster or some kind of horrifying nightmare... it was just a girl, almost his height but seemingly a few years younger than he was. She also looked distinctly human, and his eyes widened in surprise. Had he actually managed to land on not just a habitable planet, but one with living, breathing humans.

So it was with considerable excitements that he greeted the girl, being perhaps a bit too formal. "Hello! You are a local, yes? To this place?" He was not entirely clear on what 'this place' was, truth be told, but he didn't want to say 'this world' in case he'd landed on a world which was not aware there were other worlds.

Well, this wasn't what she had been expecting, not that she walked into the event with any expectation in the first place. Siri tried to determine whether she was impressed or not impressed at all. Following the strange aura brought her to what seemed to be a boy not too much older than herself. It certainly wasn't someone she recognized, and, for someone who never forgot a face in her life, that meant she had not met this one yet.

She pushed the enchanted glasses to rest on the top her head as she got a better look at him. The first thing that came to mind was teleportation. Perhaps this was another student who was experimenting his powers and was now lost. He did seem a bit disoriented the moment he appeared and then noticed her standing there. Though a grin widened on her face, she was quiet until he could regather himself. She didn't even make any sudden movements until he was ready.

And then came some mildly odd questions.

Just saying 'this place' was vague enough to be a bit intriguing, and it was enough to cause Siri to tilt her head to the side. She took a bite from her slowly melting ice cream as she contemplated the question. Was he asking if she was from the woods? The island? Was there something about her that made her look like one of the locals? There certainly wasn't anything that popped up as physically significant in her mind, as the population was so incredibly diverse. She was, after all, just an average human with an unimpressive build.

That being said, she shrugged before anything else. The only way to get through a vague question was to narrow down the meaning through specific answers. "Not exactly, I'm still working on that!" She tried to match his obvious excitement with some of her own natural enthusiasm. She smiled and pointed in what was seemingly a vague direction for anyone unfamiliar with the area. "I'm a student at the Academy, but I've only been on the island for a few weeks. Are you a student as well?" He was dressed like one, but that was certainly not their uniform.

He hadn't even noticed she was eating. In fact, there were a lot of things he wasn't noticing, but the whole thing was rather overwhelming. There was one sun in the sky, just like his world. The earth seemed similar enough, as did the woods. The girl looked human, and while he didn't exactly recognize what she was eating, it looked similar enough to foods from his own world.

She seemed pleasant, but Enelen was not exactly the most discerning person. He hadn't had a lot of exposure to people who meant him harm, which made him particularly trusting despite his teachers recommendations that he be a bit more careful about who he trusted.

He was even more delighted to hear that there was an academy on the island. Schools were, after all, the place he'd spent his entire life. They were his very reason for existence. They were also, unsurprisingly, a good deal rarer and more grand on his own world, which made the whole thing seem like a stroke of amazing luck to have landed so close to one.

"A school? Nearby?" Perhaps he'd spoken to soon. "No, I am not a student yet." The key word being yet. He would join the school, one way or another. He'd approach the grand mage (assuming they even had a grand mage), plead his case, and join academia once more. This world had even more to teach him then his own. "You are a student there, yes? What's it like?" He was so eager to hear that he was paying very little attention to his flimsy attempts at not drawing attention to himself. He'd planned to try and be subtle and act as if he belonged there, but that was clearly not happening in the long run.

Siri was not at all magical in any way. Though very intelligent and observant, the girl was essentially still just a powerless human. She didn’t come from another timeline or universe. Although some would arguably not consider her normal, she was exactly that when set up beside her peers on the island. But perhaps more than anyone she could tell then when something was even more off than usual. She was silent towards his questions at first. She kept the smile on her face, but her eyes were skeptical.

Rather than reply, the girl took a moment to take a few steps closer and then circle around him. She looked him up and down once again. Then, she turned her eyes to the sky and ground. "Starlight Academy. It’s not far. The school is very different than what I’m used to. Not that I’ve ever really been used to school. The students are interesting with all of their neat skills, but the academics are lacking for me. Though I’m not the right person to ask for a relatable opinion, I think," she admitted. She slipped her enchanted glasses back over her eyes and ate more of her ice cream as she repeated the process of circling and scanning the area.

If he had tried to be subtle about his severe lack of knowledge, it had failed him completely. Siri had been attentive enough to realize he was more lost than just a teleporter popping around the island. "No, I don’t think I could offer you much context. I can’t make heads or tails of what I’m seeing here." The teenager tipped the glasses to her nose and peered over the round blue lenses. "Where did you just come from? What are you? Do you have a name? Do you have an age?"

Yes, most would assume that the male at least had a name. Siri, however, wasn’t going to even rule out the possibility that he just spontaneously came into existence until she knew for sure.

He deflated the moment she announced that the academics were lacking, despite her warning not to take her word as law. Academics were literally his life. He wanted to go to the very best schools, to learn everything the new world had to offer.

It was very, very obvious that his cover was blown. So blown he could only wince as she peppered him with questions that were so obviously... well, trying to find out exactly what he'd originally planned to keep secret. Really, it hadn't even lasted a full ten minutes, and he let out a little huff of air and resolved himself to answering.

"I'm from another world entirely, seeking refuge. I'm just a human. My name is Enelen, and I am -" He was forced to pause, trying to remember his own age. "Nineteen."

For some reason it was usually a challenge to get information out of people. The island had its fair share of people with unhappy pasts, and they weren’t that eager to share much with some high school girl they had just met. So, when Enelen gave her a straightforward answer despite his wince and huff, she was almost surprised. He already had her attention, but still her brows seemed to raise in interest. "Fascinating!!"

But what did that really mean. Siri could have formed at least a thousand questions at the drop of a hat with a statement like that. What sort of world? What was wrong with the world? Did he know anything about where he was? Did he have any idea how lucky he might have been to be exactly where he was? She was certainly feeling lucky to have been out that particular evening. She had met everything from near immortals to near-superheroes, but this was the first person she had met to just appear from another world entirely. He might have been disappointed about blowing his own cover, but the girl was twice as excited. The grin on her face probably showed that much.

"Enelen then! I won’t forget it. My name is Sigrid, but they call me Siri. Or whatever really. I’m sixteen, but that’s counting age one at a year after my date of birth as opposed to conception in case there’s a cultural difference. I’ll be seventeen in a few months." Enelen hadn’t asked, but he didn’t need to. In this case, she was happy to clarify before he even had a chance to question her. "I’m just a human as well. No wings or special powers. I’m just clever and I like collecting special things, that’s why I get to come to the Academy."

That was the simplest way to put it. It was a way of telling him the Academy was indeed a fascinating place without overloading him with too much at once. She had to calm herself down and take this one step at a time. "You’re on a planet called Earth. We’re on a group of islands in the middle of a large ocean called the Manta Carlos Islands. You’re lucky to be here since this place is very… unique? I mean, I don’t even know what you would have done about the language barrier anywhere else."

Would there have been a language barrier? He could have been from some near-exact alternate universe for all she knew. There was so much more she needed to know. "Can you tell me how you came here?"

Enelen was... well, not very hard to get information out of. He was no safe. No, he was more like a barn door that swung open at the slightest breeze. He'd always lived a life of being... well, open. He discussed things thoroughly. The only secrets he kept were small discoveries, and even then he didn't keep them long before releasing them to the world.

She certainly looked excited, which was... well, it certainly helped him relax at least. He liked excitement. He loved academic excitement. He was nothing if not curious, and curious minds attracted each other.

They counted ages by the same way, and considering he was likely on another earth - which had been the most likely target - it was likely that they were actually three years apart. Of course, it was possible that the sun took longer, or that a year meant different things, but generally if his universal translation spell was translating right over, it probably meant the same thing. If a year wasn't really a year, or at least a close approximation, it would probably have come out as gibberish to him.

Or at least that was how it was supposed to work.

"My home world is also called earth - or at least something similar. I have a universal translation spell that automatically translates what I hear and what I say into the local language, so while I call it something other than 'earth' most likely, the word is the same so the planet is likely the same." If it wasn't earth, but something else... well, the only way that would make sense was if the inhabitants of the original earth moved to a different planet and also named it earth. "But I'm not familiar with the Manta Carlos Islands. But that might just be my unfamiliarity with geography." It wasn't as if he'd memorized a map of the territories in his home world ahead of time. It likely wouldn't have mattered.

"The earth of my world was dying, so we used the remainder of it's magic to send out those who wished to leave to other worlds. Specifically we targeted other magically active locations, in hopes that it would lead us to other civilizations like our own, as opposed to alternate realities where earth is nothing but a dead husk." In theory, the spell would not travel time at all, but human development couldn't be counted on to run parallel in every universe. "What is unique about this place?" He wasn't entirely clear what she meant by the language barrier. Had she already known about his spell?

Bright-eyed and attentive, Siri listened carefully to the details he seemed happy enough to offer. She was grateful. She did consider that this boy could have been pulling her leg and was just making up something, but the bit of evidence that was there pointed towards that he was telling the truth and she was interested in the world he was inventing either way.

The teenager gave a few quiet nods as he spoke, trying to determine with him whether or not he was certainly just in an alternative version of his own world. However, if it really was just an alternative Earth it was more different than she had initially believed. He said he was just a human. But there was suddenly a possibility that 'just a human' meant different things to the two of them. "Interesting." There was a small head tilt to the side as she ran what he just said through her head again.

"Well, let’s start by taking a few steps back!" She lifted a hand as if to write a mental note in the air before letting it drop back to her side. "You could either be luckier than I thought, or perhaps very unlucky after all. This place is unique because there is a lot of magical activity here, but… just here. Just on these islands. Well, that’s not to say that other parts of the world have a total absence of magic, that’s to say that spells and magic are very rare. Most don’t believe it’s real. And when I say I’m just a human, I’m saying that the most magical thing I can do is this—" Siri held her ice cream between her teeth for a moment so that she could do a classic thumb removal illusion for him. "Tada!"

Still, that revelation only encouraged her to learn more. The curious glimmer had not left her eyes. "Was magic a very big thing where you’re from? If so, it must be incredible. Ooor must have been at some point, anyway."

He wasn't quite sure what the gesture was. It was like she'd drawn something in the air, which wasn't a gesture he was familiar with. A different branch of magic? Writing things in the air? Or just a default spell that let her write in a discrete book by writing on air?

Just there? He didn't quite understand what she was saying when she first said it, his brain slowly trying to wander through the thing. Magic was rare? People didn't believe it? He stared at her, his mouth open slightly into a little 'o'. Did she mean to say that magic was rare?

Of course, even with that explanation, he still assumed everyone had magic. He just assumed it was more suppressed magic, less refined, with less people aware of it. It had taken millions of years of human development before magic had really started showing, and even then magic was hardly a natural part. It had to be taught to be used. So, in his mind, everyone was capable, they just weren't at the same level of his world.

"Everyone has magic. It's a huge deal for us, learning how to use it. What kind of magic you use - which school you focus on - is probably the most important thing that distinguishes you from others. It's like..." He paused, struggling to find a comparison that he felt would work. "Did this world ever have countries? It's like that." It was possible they'd never had countries, or they might have some equivalent. If they did, he'd get the right term and all would be well. That was the magic of translation, after all.

"I suppose it's fortunate this world had a magically active location then." But it wasn't really lucky he'd gotten there. The nature of the spell had launched them towards the most magically active location, so if there was only one settlement, they'd land near it.
