Cornered and pinned. That’s what Xavier would describe how he felt sometimes. But in this case, he was literally cornered and pinned. He was held against a wall in an alley, along a drecently busy street. Xavier didn’t know how no one could see what was happening, or if maybe they had just decided to turn a blind eye. It was actually an illusion that hid Xavier and this group out of view.

He couldn’t make out how many there were, but he gathered the ring leader was the one who held him. He looked a hit shorter, but certainly well built. He had some animalistic features. Xavier could guess this group were demons.

Xavier was already pretty bruised. His sides ached from them having hit him a few times already. He was suddenly thrown onto the ground. That was definitely more bruises... He groaned and attempted to stand, but was kicked back down. He knew they wouldn’t really go far, it would cause more issues for them if he had to go to the hospital. They could certainly hurt him, and give him enough hurt for the next couple of weeks. But one kick that connected with his left arm wasn’t the best... He felt a very sudden, sharp and intense pain, and he had to hold back a scream. That was gonna hurt for a while...

Xavier made no effort to escape, and made no effort to fight back. He just felt that they would cause so much more trouble for everyone involved. More than it was worth. As long as they didn’t actually go for his life, or for Dani, he could deal with it.

Chloe recognized the signs that the Gatos were around - the subtle shimmer of the air in the alleyway, the feeling of several demons around where she should be able to see them but couldn't. She knew their MO - or so she thought. Hang out under illusory cover, use (usually legal) drugs, and (sometimes) plan crimes. Even after the big shakeups in Manta Carlos's criminal underbelly, they were still at it: stealing, selling drugs, beating people up when people paid them to or when they felt like it. But mostly those guys just hung out and did drugs.

Chloe used to think of them as friends. Her father used to have a business relationship with them. On top of that, Chloe and one of their number, a sort of lust demon, used to feed off of each other every once in a while - and their relationship had nothing to do with her father. Primarily physical though it was.

They had grown apart, for sure, but they would still say hi when they ran into each other. She thought she and Ozzy would just be walking through and saying hi, on her way down to the store. She wasn't expecting to witness a crime in progress. As she got closer, all but one of Xavier's tormentors paused.

"Should we scatter?"

"Relax, they'll be cool. Hey Chloe!"

Chloe stopped in her tracks when she saw the beatdown happening. "Uh... I don't think I want to know what this is." Ozzy stayed close, the mouthpiece of his Golden Horn near his neckline.

"No, no, stay" said one. He was one of their ringleaders, looked a little bit like a jaguar, and always seemed to be scowling. But this was a happy scowl. Chloe had met this man enough times that she could tell. "I have a gift for you. A rat, delivered straight to your doorstep."

Though she was shorter than Xavier, he lifted him easily, one arm gripping the scruff of Xavier's neck. This was when Chloe recognized it was Xavier they were beating up. Their eyes would meet. Xavier would get to watch the horror on her face playing out in real time.

By this point, Xavier was quite beaten. Clearly nothing serious, but definitely bruised. When he was held up, he looked like a bit of a mess. He already had a black eye forming, along with a busted lip. Blood dripped from the corner of his mouth. Thankfully not the internal bleeding kind.

He didn’t look up while they talked to whoever arrived. But when he was lifted and he saw Chloe... his face that would’ve look busted, but blank, just dropped. He could’ve dealt with anything really, but not this. Xavier had been thoroughly beaten up, and very likely had a broken arm, but all he could think was that this was unfair for Chloe. She didn’t deserve to see him again after all that happened, it was too unfair.

Xavier felt like his heart had dropped through the floor. He casted his eyes downwards, desperately trying not to look at her. He felt, and looked, completely ashamed. He wished that he could just run away, but pretty much everything hurt. He doubted he would’ve been able to get out of the demon’s grip anyway.

Xavier attempted to speak a few times, but it was surprisingly hard to form a coherent sentence for a solid 6 seconds. “Just... beat me up... already...” He finally managed to mutter out. “Don’t... get her involved...” His voice was barely more than a murmur.

"Don't worry, horns, he's not gonna try anything."

Chloe wasn't sure what impressed her more: his failure to understand why she was horrified, or the fact that he still called her 'horns' sometimes. That nickname was never going to be a thing.

"We've seen him around, and we noticed he wasn't afraid to show his face around our turf. So we decided to fix that. Call it a public service." He sneered and dropped Xavier back down, resting a foot on the back of the boy's head. "A free course in keeping your stupid face where we don't have to see it. Starlight should hire me."

Chloe didn't want anyone seeking revenge on her behalf. This had to stop. But she also didn't want to make a faux pas with this organized crime group. This would take a little bit of finesse.

"... Well, it looks like you've done an excellent job of teaching him that," Chloe said. She tried to exude the kind of confidence her father used to - the perpetual amusement, thinking all these mortal concerns were so quaint. "But if class is over, would you mind leaving the two of us? It's been a while since I've seen Xavier. We have some catching up to do."

There were some appreciative hoots and laughs from the assembled thugs.

"I can respect that. The illusion has another ten minutes left in it. So, have fun. And - let us know if you ever want to pick up where the old man left off, alright?"

Right. He was still convinced Chloe would get back into the crime world. Chloe assured him she would let him know and forced a smile. After they had all left, she would let out a long breath.

"I'm sorry they did that to you."

Xavier didn’t know Chloe was essentially bluffing, he hadn’t known her long plus it was pretty convincing. So all he could think was ‘Ah. This is fair.’ He hissed to himself as he landed practically directly on the arm he is almost certain is broken. Well, at least he’d be able to come up for a pretty mundane excuse for a broken arm. Everything else might be a bit harder though.

He heard the group walk away, he barely registered the last few words the group had with Chloe. He just remained on the ground, his shoulders tensed up as he waited to get kicked or hit, anything. But that moment never came. Xavier just kept tensing again every time he started to relax, prepared to feel some kind of shot of pain. He finally looked up at Chloe, and his face just showed the pure shock.

She was the one apologising? He was the one who should apologise! Xavier used a nearby wall to forcefully pull himself up. His right hand held his side, trying to help with some of the pain as best he could, while his left arm hung limp at his side. “Why... are you apologising...? I deserve it...” He struggled to form words, but now that he could actually stand, it was a bit easier to talk. Although he kept his gaze to the ground to avoid looking at Chloe.

Chloe helped him up. With her strength, it was easy.

"What? You don't deserve..." She sighed. "Look, from all I've heard, it sounds like you've been through enough."

Man, they did a number on him. She started thinking - how far away is the nearest hospital? And then it hit her how bad it might look bringing Xavier to the hospital looking like this. Fuck, she really didn't think this through. But what other choice did she have at this point. She pinched the bridge of her nose.

"You really didn't want to know what this was," said Ozzy.

"Yeah," said Chloe. "You're right, Ozzy. Thank you." She turned back to Xavier. "We're getting you to the hospital now. You look like you need a doctor. How much walking can you do?"
