The 17 year old walked silently down the long row of stables. She hadnt ridden a horse since she was 15, but she hoped she would remember what she had learned. Jessica found a horse that looked especially gentle. His name was Beri. He was an Appolosa. She opened the door to the stable and stepped in. His reins were already on, and she led him out, heading in the direction of what she hoped was the tack room. It was. She tied Beri's reins to a station nearby and walked into the room. She gathered his saddle blanket, his saddle. The stirups, his bit, and a brush for after. As she turned, she saw a helmet just lying there. Better safe than sorry... she figured as she placed the black velvet helmet on her head and buckled it up. She put the equipment onto the horse, and led it to the arena.

She took a deep breath and flung one leg up onto Beri,as she mounted. She slipped slightly, but steadied herself quikly enough that she didnt fall off. She placed her riding boots into the horses stirrups and urged it foreward. It began to walk. This isnt fast enough... she thought as she tried to get it to trot. It began to gallop. She wasnt ready for that suden burst of speed, and she slipped from the saddle. She landed painfully on her ankle and lay on the ground.

"Better safe than sorry.. HA! Not with me.. something bad ALWAYS happens with ME!" she muttered quietly. Part of her wanted to use her powers to wish away the pain, but she tried to distract herself so she wouldnt feel it. Nothing was working, and no one was there to help her. OH GREAT! she thought as she sighed Im all alone and im hurt..

So sue him. Kane didn't like riding horses. In his opinion, they took glee in his blindness. Mind you, nobody believed him. But he knew the truth. The horid beasts plotted his demise. He heard their thoughts.

And so the blind boy was walking around the trails. Mostly because he liked the lack of people. As usual, the black silk covered his eyes, though most of it was obscured with his unusually unruly hair.

His customary white scarf flipped out behind him in the slight breeze, obscuring a bright green t-shirt, layered over a black longsleeved. His feet made little sound as he paused, feeling the sudden connection of a mind. He though vaguely that they were in pain, but the connection was still too weak for him to be sure.

He moved forward some more, until the connection was stronger, and he deemed that she was indeed hurt. He came into view, and offered a weak, boyish smile at her. "Hi. You seem like you could use some help.." he said in his calm, toneless way. The fact that his voice never changed wasn't creepy, simply calming, like watching a lake on a windless day.

He stayed at a logically safe distance from her, so as to prove that he wasn't a threat, and he didn't plan on moving from that position until she okayed his help.

"Ya... I guess I do.." she said, well, more like whispered. Shetried to get up, but she fell down as soon she she got to her feet. A searing pain went through her ankle as she fell again.

"I think I may have twisted my ankle" she said, barely even noticing the boy. When she finally looked up she noted the silk that covered his eyes. That is strange... Perhaps he is blind.. she thought curiously. SHe hadn't ever met ANYONE that was blind before. He seemed totally normal. He seemed... nice....

She watched him for a moment. He had light hair and was very skinny. He looked very nice. Someone who you would wanna be friends with. Her ankle continued to throb as she sat there, immobile.

That is strange... Perhaps he is blind..

He heard her thoughts, and his mouth twitched in a small quick smile for a split second. This girl thought a lot. So far so good. He cocked his head slightly to the side. "Do you mind if I check? Your ankle, I mean. I've got some first aid experience." he gestured towards her, taking a few steps forward and crouching down in front of her.

He didn't move to check her ankle though, waiting for her permission first. Instead, he busied his fingers with the silk covering his eyes, taking it off, and wrapping it absently around his hand. He flicked his unseeing, vibrant eyes away from her face and in the general direction of her ankle.

"Uhh okay.. sure.... I think I may have sprained it or something... It really hurts..." she said. As he crouched down infront of her, she could feel her cheeks get a little warmer. She wasnt really used ot people being this close to her unless they were about to harm her. He wouldnt do something like that... I hope.. she thought quietly to herself, hopig he wasnt a bad person.

"Im Jessica Lei, by the way..." she said, her ankle still throbbing. It was really starting to hurt not. She sat there quietly for a moment. She said nothign, but her mind was racing.

Who is he?
Why is he here?
Is he a good guy?
Does he want me to grant him a wish?
Should I be afraid of him?

She couldnt help her thoughts, she was always quite cautious.

Kane reached out and touched her ankle gently, somehow knowing exactly where it was. Mostly because her was using her eyes as his own. Once he knew where it was though, he stopped using her sight. He gently felt along the ankle, and did indeed find that it was just twisted. All the while her rampant thoughts ran through his head. He kept a completely serene face, not betraying his amusement.

Deft fingers wrapped the black silk around her ankle in a makeshift bandage quickly, and he smiled. "There. That should hold." he stood, brushing off his knees, and then offered a hand down to her, kind, unseeing, vibrant blue eyes directed at her. "Here, I'll walk you back to the stables, you're gonna need something to put your weight on or you won't be walking for a month." he said, his calm, toneless voice never changing. But he appeared friendly enough.

He used his mental ability to reach into her mind gently, and produce a calming effect. He didn't really care that it was manipulating, but her thoughts of distrust were getting annoying.

She suddenly felt very calm, and was very easily helped up and the two began walking back to the stables. She had been lucky he had been there. SHe would just have to tell the people in charge of the stables where Beri was, but that was no big deal. She turned to the boy.

"Whats your name? " she asked, curiously. He hadnt actually told her than. She watched him intently as she hobbled along the pathway. She was still curious about why he had been wearing the black silk around his eyes, but she decided not to bring that up, yet..

He turned his head in the direction of her voice, strange eyes making contact with hers, though he didn't know it. "I'm Kane..." he paused for a second, trying to decide whether to ask her name or not, since he already knew it. "What's yours?" he finally asked, in his toneless voice, cocking his head to the side to illustrate his point.

His mind, which was doing a sweep of the ground in front of them, found a root that she was about to trip on, and just as she did, he caught her with a strong arm, and lifted her over it. "Careful, you don't want to hurt the other ankle." he said softly, care almost hearable in his voice. Almost. Not quite.

"Im Jessica.. Pleaseure to meet you Kane.. Oh I definetly wouldnt wanna do that..." she said. She still sorta hoped she had the courage to ask if he was blind, but she didt want to sound rude. Instead she managed to avoid the root, but no a tree that seemed to appear out of nowhere. She hit if head first and fell to the ground with a small thud.

"Okay, that didnt hurt at all.. " she said, laughing slightly, but tears were welling up. It actually really hurt. She was also VERY embarassed.

Kane smiled gently when she fell from the tree, and couldn't help but hear her thoughts. "Well, since I've been hearing the question in your voice this whole time, I am blind, and you can't lie to blind people. We're very good at detecting tones." he said, still in his calm toneless voice.

He offered a hand to the direction her voice had come from, and again got it right with amazing accuracy. That was what happened after a life time of blindness. "Are you still ok to walk, or shall I carry you?" he asked, a small, almost teasing smile on his face, though his tone of voice never changed. It wasn't his fault that it didn't change, it just didn't.
