Owned and operated by Bjorn "Big B" Bjornson, the Bearclaw Bakery & Cafe is beloved by students and citizens alike for its reasonable prices, delicious pastries, and welcoming atmosphere. Though their coffees and teas aren't the finest quality, they are made with care, and fun new drinks with silly names regularly rotate through the menu.

Located in downtown Manta Carlos within a block of the school shuttle bus stop, the BB&C is a modest two-story building of wood and brick. Upstairs is an off-limits apartment where Bjorn makes his home, and downstairs is the business. It boasts mismatched cushions on hand-carved wooden chairs, a collection of sturdy tables, free wi-fi and woven rugs on the hardwood floor. In the winter months, it stays toasty warm with the heat of the large ovens behind the counter and the seasonally spiced drinks. In the summer, patrons are encouraged to sit out in the small patio under the green-and-white striped awning and enjoy a refreshing chilled tea. The single-stall bathroom is clean, wheelchair accessible, and has lavender scented handsoap.

There are a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. The main counter is lovingly polished wood and glass, with the day's sugary treats displayed with handwritten signs on platters. A small bookshelf on the far right wall has a sign stating "take one, leave one" and is usually half-full of battered paperbacks.

Big B is more than willing to employ students and citizens part-time as baristas and bakers, and makes an effort to provide a safe and friendly atmosphere for his customers.
