Appearance description:
Bastian is so mixed that it's almost impossible to tell his nationality from the first glance. He has skin the colour of milk-diluted coffee, while his features are an odd blend of Nordic and Eastern-European. Freckles dot the bridge of his nose and his cheeks. He had let his spiky dark hair grow out a bit on top after leaving the military, but he still kept the sides shaved and the top short for efficiency. His eyes are a blend of blue, green and grey, with no particular shade being easily discernible. Some would describe his appearance as handsome, though it is marred with many scars.
His most prominent scars include a burn mark extending from the left side of his lower jaw to his left cheek, a knife wound in his right eyebrow, and a bullet mark near the back of his throat. When he smiles, the left corner of his mouth doesn't lift as much as the right due to the injuries he sustained, leaving his grin permanently lopsided. He also has several bullet scars as the result of a shotgun blast on his back and more general cut-caused scars scattered over his body.
In terms of build he is not particularly tall, standing at about 5'8 (174cm) with an athletic build. His athleticism is not extreme in terms of muscle mass, but constant workout had kept him trim and toned. He doesn't pay much attention to what he wears and you'll normally find him in jeans and a neutral-toned t-shirt, with hoodies added in colder weather. He sometimes wears clothes leftover from his army service in his spare time.

Bastian is nice enough to get by. He makes small talk, is polite to service workers, and can hold a brief conversation with you. He is quite an easy guy to talk to on the surface level. While he doesn't initiate many conversations, he generally is socially aware enough to break silences. He gives off an impression of being overwhelmingly average, a somewhat bland person with not much to him.
He seems to be also quite in control of himself. Due to his EMT and Army medic background, he is capable of staying calm and alert under high stress situations or when fatigued, and had generally desensitised himself to suffering. However, this also means that he can sometimes struggle with identifying his own emotions and sympathising with others. He tries, but it's clear he isn't very used to it.
Bastian hates to lie. As a result, he can sometimes be brutally honest and direct in conversations. If he thinks that you have done something wrong, he will definitely tell you, but if he's impressed he won't hide it. His honesty doesn't discriminate between compliments and insults. He also has a quick, witty sense of humour that he isn't afraid to use, but he does understand when a situation is too serious to joke.
Beyond his outward display of personality, Bastian is actually quite a withdrawn person. He dislikes to talk about his past aside from his time in the army, and will often resort to silence when questioned. Regarding his army background, he tends to operate on a don't-ask, don't-tell basis. He can become very aggressive if pressed for details about his personal life, though he regrets it afterwards. While he isn't a bad person, he tends to push away those that manage to get close to him, with the unfounded belief that his nature will hurt whoever comes close. He is also quite easily aggravated and can be a little over-defensive at times.
In terms of his worldview, Bastian is quite cynical. He believes that the world is a pretty awful place, and he's seen plenty of the horrible things that could happen. He doesn't believe in good unless if it's proven to him and can often be a bit paranoid and suspicious, though that isn't outwardly displayed. He wants to do good, however, and believes that while the world is a nasty place it is still worth fighting for. He harbours a certain disdain towards figures of power and following the societal norm, and while he does not outwardly express it often it is something that heavily influences his actions.
There are some things that he will go out of his way to avoid. Most of his clothing is made of cotton as opposed to synthetics, and he wears earplugs as much as he can get away with it. There are also specific foods that he refuses to eat. He struggles with sleeping, though that's not something that he will reveal to anybody. These are recent developments, and he believes that it is caused by some sensory processing issues, though he has never seen a psychologist before.

Active abilities:
Pain transfer
Bastian has the unique ability to transfer pain from one party to the other, including himself. He himself can only receive pain, and his own pain cannot be transferred. This transfer must take place when he is physically in contact with both the person he wants to take the pain from and the one that he wants to transfer it to.
He can only transfer the physical sensation of pain and discomfort, not symptoms of an illness. For example, if somebody was suffering from food poisoning, the pain transfer will only involve the raw pain and discomfort of the illness, not the actual symptoms.
The transfer takes place instantaneously. The party receives the pain while it persists until they choose to stop feeling it. New injuries do not have their pain transferred. The targeted pain is removed from the other person while the effect is maintained. This time cannot exceed 12 hours.
This transfer takes 2-10 hours to recharge, depending on the severity of the pain, and can only be done 2 times in a 24 hour period. This pain will never cause death. The party that is receiving the pain must be aware and consenting of this, but the party who is affected by the pain originally does not have to consent.
Reaper's guidance.
As a half reaper, Basti has the ability to guide souls into purgatory, but only if the souls are willing. Occasionally he does have to do some convincing.
Passive abilities:
Reaper's immortality
This ability prevents him from ageing normally, and lets him survive on average 25% longer in situations that will kill a human being, such as asphyxiation, blood loss, or similar. However, if he is shot straight through the brain or through other methods that will instantly kill him, this does not apply. His aging is slowed (half the speed of a normal human being) and will hit a complete stop by the time he is in his early thirties (the exact age is not certain).
Death sense
This is a diluted version of most reapers and their ability to sense souls and the undead. Bastian is only able to sense and see lost souls that had recently (within the last 24hours) left their bodies. He can see them within his visible range, but not through visual barriers such as walls. They appear to him as a semi-transparent version of their physical body, and Bastian is able to interact with them and if willing, escort them to purgatory.
Can you see me?
Bastian has a special form of being slightly invisible that he can’t control. While he is still visible, people generally tend to just automatically categorise him mentally as just another background person. While people can still see him, he will blend into the background no matter what he is doing unless if he is directly interacting with them, seeking them out, or if they are looking for him/trying to interact with him. To look for him, they must know who Bastian is beforehand. Similarly, for somebody that Bastian is looking for to see him, Bastian has to be aware of them beforehand (but they do not have to know Bastian.) Only those that he directly interacts with will be able to see him if nobody is looking for him. Once they interact with him or if he interacts with them, they will be able to notice him from then onwards until he leaves their range of sight.
Weaknesses:
Fuelled by pain
Bastian feeds on pain to survive. This is a need to him similar to how most people need to eat to survive. He still requires food and water, so this is rather a bonus requirement.
The pain can be caused by anything, inflicted on any party, including himself. Only physical pain counts as "pain". He must be in physical contact with the person who is in pain to be fuelled by the person. This physical contact doesn't have to be continuous but must be deliberate and last longer than 3 seconds. If he causes the pain, there is no need for him to be in contact with them. In either circumstance, he does not take away the pain.
Generally speaking, the more intense the pain, the longer it can sustain him for. The pain from an average, shallow cut, if not caused by him, can last him about 3 hours, while the same pain inflicted by him will sustain him for 3 times longer.
Once the countdown runs out, he will not tire out immediately. The symptoms are more gradual. He will first start to experience mild fatigue in every day actions. There will also be mild headaches and nausea that go along with it. (Think altitude sickness.) After 12 hours the headaches and nausea will intensify and the fatigue is serious. He will be unable to walk for more than a minute without needing to rest. Dizziness and nosebleeds become common. Without anything in the next 8 hours, his organs will gradually start to fail. His life becomes threatened at that point. Most medical or supernatural intervention to these symptoms are superficial at best.
Agent of Death
Bastian is an agent of death. Those who are able to sense life will see him as only half-alive, having half the soul of a human being. This means that any spells designed to heal will have the opposite effect of him, causing him injuries instead. Spells designed to resurrect will, while not outright killing him, cause long-term unconsciousness and serious injuries.
Biography:
- Born to single mother, had one older brother. (Marcel, 4 years older)
- Family travelled around Europe for most of his childhood
- Settled down in Berlin when Bastian was 8.
- Mother was absent, worked 2 jobs.
- Bastian & Marcel raised themselves.
- Marcel joined a local gang aged 14 due to a lack of restraint.
- In a confrontation with a rival gang Marcel was shot and killed aged 17
- Mother moved what's left of family to the US
- Bastian did well in school, never really stood out, almost no close friends, few sports.
- Mother diagnosed with late-stage bone cancer in Bastian's senior year
- Spent money on treatment, but she passed before Bastian graduated.
