Name: Basanti Sharma
Class: None
Subject/Work: Therapist and Psychiatrist for Starlight Academy
Age: 44
Birthday: February 14th
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Appearance Description: A larger-set brown-skinned, black-haired woman with horn-rimmed glasses and her hair tied back in a braid sits at the bar before you. Her black leather jacket somehow works together well with her deep blue and brown floral print shirt and matching deep blue skinny jeans with black open-toe shoes.
A silver locket hangs loosely from her neck by its chain, a secret visibly hidden from the world. Her golden-amber eyes stare silently into bar, almost as if lost in deep thought or memories.
Personality Description: Basanti is a woman who's had little to fear from the life she's lead, yet bears the burden of the world on her shoulders and has seen some of the worst the world has to offer.
She is stand-offish and maybe a touch brutish when not thinking about helping the person she's speaking with, but she is very sensitive to others' emotions and likes to be very involved with other people and help them with their problems and requests when she's on duty.
Basanti is arguably not a good person- she is just good at her job and enjoys doing what she does.
She might not necessarily be an alcoholic, but she has a good tolerance for alcohol and drinks on a near-daily basis at her favorite dive bar in Manta Carlos.
Powers:
Telepathy
Basanti is able to read peoples' emotions easily within about a mile unless their emotions are fully inhuman. When she gets very close to people, she is able to enter their mind and create a virtual telepathic environment shared between the two together.
Branches-
- Sentient Entity Detection
Species Abilities: Basanti is a middle-aged woman with no special powers inherent to her physical being other than the mutation that granted her powers.
Biography:
Born to a British father and a Hindu priestess in India, Basanti lead a double life of loyalty to her father and his nation, and empathic closeness to her mother and her religion. Despite Basanti's closeness with her mother, her father drove a wedge between them the day he sternly recommend that she serve in the army. She willingly enlisted and turned her back on her mother's wishes, which broke her heart. She never saw her mother again, and after she left the army and realized what her father did to her, she cut ties with him and never looked back.
As a part of the medicine corps of the UK Army, Basanti went through standard training but never saw actual combat action after moving through school programs on the government's dime. She spent her time dutifully as both a medic and a licensed psychiatrist, helping soldiers with the effects war had on their brains and souls, and was very successful- seemingly as if able to jump into their head and get to know the ins and outs of their struggles.
It wasn't long before she recognized her power awakened by honing her emotional sensibilities, and she was terrified. She began to experience horrific events repeatedly with each new person wracked by war anxiety, depression, addiction, PTSD and more. She started breaking down piece by piece, beginning to live through each person's experiences through their eyes, unable to do anything but watch what they saw, feel what they felt, know what they know- that war is hell.
Because of her work, Basanti fell into a deep depression, feeling unable to do anything to help herself and feeling trapped with her lot in life. Before she even had the chance to do anything rash, a letter appeared- a headmistress of a prestigious school for people like herself was aware of her awakened power. The letter invited her to come to the school to finish Basanti's higher-level studies and get better oriented with her powers.
This letter immediately brought a calm Basanti had not felt in months, and any thoughts of abandoning her post or worse washed away from her. She began exchanging letters back and forth with the school, explaining her powers and discussing the furthering of her education.
By the time she finished her round in the army and discharged honorably, she had travel plans prepared to head straight for Starlight Academy.
Basanti now considers this to be the biggest mistake of her life. Upon learning she left the army, Basanti's father abandoned her, doing so to treat her the way she abandoned her career, and Basanti never found her mother despite years of searching. In response to her father, she angrily decided to adopt her mother's maiden name, which has so far prevented him from finding where she's gone.
While she believes it was a mistake to have gone back to school at Starlight Academy, she doesn't resent the school and is actually quite proud of it and its accomplishments as well as her role there- Basanti operates a psychiatry practice for the school and occasionally for the people of Manta Carlos.
Basanti suffers from depression, but has built up a strong tolerance for other peoples' shocking experiences- she's seen so much that has left her more than a little jaded.

Powers:
Telepathy
Basanti is able to read peoples' emotions easily within about a mile unless their emotions are fully inhuman. When she gets very close to people, she is able to enter their mind and create a virtual telepathic environment shared between the two together.
Branches-
- Sentient Entity Detection
Without mental immunities or perfectly masked emotions, Basanti is able to know the existence of specific people within a large range (a couple hundred miles), assuming she is familiar enough with the person's emotions to know who they are. This power becomes most useful within a mile of a person she is trying to read- most feelings are very vague when far enough out, though still distinguishable enough with familiarity on Basanti's part.
- Emotional ReadingUnless she is trying to read something fully inhuman or capable of shielding its mind, Basanti is able to get a very good picture of emotions a person is feeling. People who know how to mask their emotions or manifest them in physical ways (such as auras or spiritual projection) often find themselves facing a very uncomfortable Basanti as these are the people she is least able to read.
- Visualization TelepathyAt very close ranges, Basanti is able to bind herself and other people inside of one of their minds. Since doing this exposes the host to potential emotional or memory damage, she rarely brings others in with her unless she is absolutely sure she can trust them, and when working with clients commonly begins by starting by bringing her client into her own mind to get them acclimated.
Interacting with images and environments summoned in such a place can permanently change how a person remembers or feels about what is inside their head. What was previously there is never really truly lost, simply overwritten- changes are made like an animation cel laid on top of another, subtly different from before.
In some particularly strong memories, it is possible for Basanti and her host to lose themselves to the memory, and to have them replay in a way that is akin to a first-person dream. These are most often the clients that Basanti has to work hardest with, as she is least able to help them while conjoined with a person in such a state.
Despite its effects, it is very hard for Basanti to use this offensively- a person who resists will often find themselves torn between their mind and reality, and while disorienting, will not necessarily stop them from reacting to her invasion.

While not able to contest mental powers with other telepaths in any way, Basanti is completely immune to the effects of them herself and thus is always fully in control of her own being. Even if they wanted to speak with her, other telepaths have no way to communicate with using their own powers.
- Enhanced MemoryBasanti remembers everything she has ever seen in others' memories as if she herself had lived them. This has proven both a blessing and a curse in her lifetime.
