It had been almost a week since the last night of the tree lighting. Almost a week since she had drank from Phaedra, the girl everyone talked about. She didn't know why she had done it. It had just happened. She had been so thirsty, and then... on cloud nine. Holy hell her heart had swelled whenever she looked at the spider girl. Thought about her laugh or her scent.

And then an hour after, it all came crashing down. Alma had only ever been so depressed when she found out that she was half lust demon. Her heart was heavy. None of it had been real, but it felt real. So real. She had barely eaten in the past week, and barely drank enough blood to keep her alive. She wanted to cry but she had no more tears left. Why had Phaedra ignored her? Gone off with her boyfriend like she didn't even exist.

Iggy had been supportive, but there was no filling that void that Phaedra had left in her heart. Each day was a little better, but she couldn't help but feel like it would never go away. And everywhere around her, she could smell the same blood as Phaedra. Children of Asmodeus. In fact... she smelled one right now. It gave her a queasy combination of joy and anger.

Leaping down from her hiding spot on the roof, Alma glided towards the ground. She could barely fly right now, so being in the air was dangerous. But that weird sense of urging she had been feeling lately caused her to throw caution to the wind. She had to find out where that scent was coming from. Her eyes scanned the courtyard, looking for the source.

Ah, there he was.

Things had been going fairly well on the island so far for Lysander, or at least as well as they could go for someone who was perpetually starving themselves and hated each time they were finally driven to eat. He'd been worried about running into his relatives here, but aside from the disgusting centipede creature, they'd been surprisingly good. He hadn't even been attacked much aside from a cousin kicking him, which was comparatively better than most of the ways he'd been hurt before.

School still wasn't much help other than giving vague ideas about alchemy and magic bargains. But he'd only been here a short time, so there was at least an illusion of progress, even if it was very slow progress. He'd been alive this long, he could wait a few more years for a solution. It was more hope than he'd had before.

In between classes and almost at the limit of his hunger, the half-demon wasn't really paying attention to the people around him. He didn't see anyone he knew or sense anyone troublesome. And he was a little too preoccupied to pay attention to anyone else. He'd respond if someone spoke to him, but otherwise he was pretty much oblivious.

Alma winged low and crouched on a tree branch as Lysander walked closer, oblivious to her. Okay. She would go down there and ask him. It'd be totally weird, she knew, but she didn't care. Whatever was making her braver, less inhibited made her not care if people saw her as weird. So she would just ask. The worst he could say was no.

But as Lysander moved closer, something shifted. Something about him made her blood boil. God his stupid face made her so angry. And that smell, the smell of lust demon on him made her even angrier as it brought back visions of Phaedra. Alma felt the tears running down her cheek before she knew she was crying.

Her puils dilated, her heart racing. She wasn't thinking anymore. She just wanted his blood. As he got nearer, Alma pounced. Flew down out of the tree, fangs bared. She slammed into Lysander hard, sinking her fangs into his shoulder, through his shirt. Wrapped both arms and legs around him so she could keep a good grip while she drank.

It was so good. So warm and fresh and the way it felt going down was incredible. Alma wondered once again why she had never drank from a person before. There were so many willing people, after all.

The biggest problem with Alma's thinking was that Lysander was not, in fact, a willing blood donor. Not that that was the only thing wrong with attacking another student in the middle of the school's courtyard. She was right that he probably would've said no. He might've been sympathetic about someone who was starving, but he hated being touched and wasn't about to just let anyone bite him, much less a teenager.

Lysander barely managed to keep his balance when he was slammed into. Yelling out in a half-growl and spinning to try and dislodge his unknown assailant. "What the fuck?!" He shouted again when whoever it was bit him - so much for people at the school having better self-control.

The half-demon was somewhat used to being attacked, though never by a vampire. And it had been many years since he'd been attacked by anyone stronger or quicker. Ever since his childhood, he'd avoided most demons of Hell when he was forced to return. He wasn't going to take this without a fight, but he'd been caught off guard and there was nothing much he could do while pinned like this.

So he shifted, hoping the sudden appearance of his wings would loosen the grip of the vampire on his shoulder, or at least distract them enough that they'd let go.

Alma was not expecting her victim to pop wings. The suddenness of it cause her to lose her grip and fall off. She hadn't drank nearly enough blood to make her feel better, but it was more than enough for the other effect to kick in. Barely able to stand, Alma looked up at Lysander through lidded eyes. Her vision was hazy, everything mildly blurred out. Except him. God he was glorious to look at. So handsome, not too masculine. He had a slight feminine charm about him that just made Alma's stomach tie itself up in knots.

Her tongue was heavy, her speech slurred. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bite you," she meant to say. But it came out garbled and thick, like her mouth was full of peanut butter.
"I think I love you." These words too were incomprehensible as she struggled to find her balance, to stand up. Alma's heart was beating faster and faster, she thought it might explode out of her chest.

As soon as he felt his unknown attacker's grip loosen, Lysander spun around to face them. He wasn't certain what he should do, but punching them in the face was was the first thing that came to mind. Except that even though they had attacked first, starting a fight in the schoolyard was probably not the best idea. The second thought was that he should do was walk away and report this incident, and possibly get his wound checked just in case vampire bites interacted weirdly with him for some reason.

Of course, he'd need to see who the person was before he reported it. When he did see that it was apparently a teenager, he was glad he hadn't decided to punch. Appearances were deceiving but he didn't want to get in trouble if this girl was as young as she looked. That didn't stop him from glaring at her - even a teenager shouldn't be biting random strangers, aura or no aura.

He couldn't make out what she was saying, and he didn't really care. But the way she was looking at him made him uneasy. It wasn't lust - he would've been able to taste that. But it was something, and he didn't like the implications. Hopefully it was just something to do with her being a vampire and not a new aspect of his own abilities to worry about.

It wasn't his problem now - let the teachers sort it out. Still angry, he bit out the words. "What's your name?"

Alma's heart fluttered when he spoke to her. Oh god his voice was so smooth, so comforting. Everything about him made her vibrate and feel light and airy. He asked her name. He looked angry, and rightly so. But if she could just explain to him.

"My name is Al-"

Her eyes went wide as fire ran through her veins. What was happening? Alma fell on her face and when she looked back up, blood was flowing from her eyes as if she were crying uncontrollably. "H-help..." She managed weakly before a slurry of black substance, not quite liquid and wispy like smoke, forced itself up out of her lungs and onto the grass.

A crowd was gathering now, watching the girl spasm and heave up the strange substance and the young looking man in front of her. Alma, for her part, was completely unaware of everything except the distinct feeling they she was going to burn to death from the inside out.

...

That was unexpected.

Lysander was shocked speechless for at least a minute. He'd seen a lot of things in wars and in Hell, but he was pretty sure he'd seen nothing like this outside of a bad horror film. In the back of his mind he wondered if this was some sort of vampire rabies and he hoped he wouldn't catch it.

Then his soldier's discipline kicked in. This girl needed a doctor, and as much as some dark part of him was drawn to the violence, he wasn't a cruel man. He didn't try to touch the girl himself, not only because she might be contagious, but because the timing of this made it seem likely that she was having some kind of reaction to him. Even if it was just because she had drunk his bllood, it was best to be safe.

He turned to the crowd of gawkers and started delegating instead. Pointing at each person in turn and speaking firmly. "You - find the nearest professor and tell them what's happening. You - find a school doctor and bring them out here. You - call the police and tell them a student was attacked by a vampire and now the vampire is bleeding from her eyes and coughing up black goo."

Someone in the crowd may have been a professor, but delegating that way made it more likely that help would come. He hadn't asked for anyone with healing powers in the crowd for pretty much the same reason, and also because he thought someone who was actually a doctor might have a better idea of what was going on. He was still a little annoyed with the girl, but he didn't want her dead.

Now there was nothing to do but wait.

Alma was quiet, if only because any attempt to make noise ended with her vomiting up more of that wispy black stuff. It didn't have a taste exactly, but it burned like hell coming up and left her mouth feeling dry and slimy at the same time. She thought this was the worst of it, but she was dead wrong.

The fire flared up under her skin against and Alma instinctively popped her claws and dug into her arms to try and get it out. It didn't work, a d fresh blood flowed from her wounds, making the pain worse. She was losing a lot of blood now, both from her eyes that didn't seem to want to stop and now the cuts in her arms.

A teacher arrived, or maybe more. She couldn't tell. Her vision was red and hazy besides. She was blacking out, she could tell. She didn't feel the arms carry her away, but she would wake up later in the hospital, still on fire.
