Name: Asusuke Hiuchi
Age: 1595, Physically ~30
Birthday: September 20
Gender: Male
Species: God/Shinigami
Category: Supporting Character
Career: Clinical Psychologist/Ghost Whisperer

Appearance Description:

Hiuchi looks like an average Japanese male from his facial features and skin tone to his general build, perhaps a little tall at 5'9", but with nothing non-human about his appearance. He looks much younger than he actually is, though still adult, ambiguously aged anywhere from his 20s-40s, and being clean shaven doesn't help. His black hair is short and wavy, and his eyes are black as well. Whatever his emotions, Hiuchi's expression is usually calmly neutral, and he doesn't laugh much, though he has a genuine smile when he's happy. His clothes are always neat and clean, neither overly casual nor formal. His accent is an unusual mix of mostly Greek and Japanese, and his tone is mid-range and moderate.

Personality Description:
Hiuchi is level-headed, calm, generally steady. The strong but silent type when it comes to his own emotions, but a shoulder to lean on. He has a sort of quiet contentment, perhaps not exuberant, but not overly neurotic either, though he does have a tendency towards depression. He does not experience high levels of positive emotions, but he has learned to deal with any negative, and he is not bitter about the situation, taking happiness where he can.

To Hiuchi, stability and tradition are important, especially family. He is monogamous, very opposites attract with his wife, and a strict but loving father.

His connection to ghosts, mental illness, and the spirit world means he doesn't necessarily see life as precious or death as bad, finding meaning in both, and bringing comfort to both living and dead. After family, Hiuchi's passion is helping people move on - he has compassion for people who are stuck, especially ghosts. Aside from this, he doesn't have many hobbies, but he does have a fondness for traditional Japanese music and can play the taiko drum decently well, knowledge he has been passing down to his daughter.

Active Abilities:
Medium - can make ghosts visible and audible to a person with a personal connection to the ghost (family/lover/close friend) by touching both at the same time. Helps certain ghosts pass on, specifically suicides and other ghosts remaining because of unresolved trauma, not ghosts magically cursed or revenge ghosts.

Calming voice - While touching a willing target, his voice can temporarily clear negative emotions involving sorrow, grief, and guilt, allow the person to talk with a clear mind. Ineffective when either is experiencing high fear or anger.

Ghost-like - Can become intangible to living beings at will for up to 15 minutes, with a resting time of the same amount. Within 10' of undead can do this indefinitely, with a resting time of 15 minutes or less once the undead departs.

Passive Abilities:
Within 10', can sense mental illness, acute trauma, and brain damage. Can distinguish between them and roughly tell the extent of damage.

Ghost connection - Can't be possessed by ghosts/undead spirits, can still be possessed by spirits that are not undead. Can see, hear, and touch ghosts/undead spirits.

Immortal. Ageless. Rapidly regenerates everything except decapitation and physical brain damage, healing cuts in seconds and regenerating whole limbs in hours. Decapitation would kill him, and both brain damage and decapitation would only be healed after full resurrection. If killed, will become a ghost, invisible and immaterial, for a couple weeks, couple months if decapitated or severely brain-damaged.

Immune to poison/disease. Resistant to the brain-affecting effects of drugs - he pretty much can't get drunk, but things such as antidepressants are almost entirely ineffective. Doesn't need food.

Can hold his breath easily for about five minutes, twice that underwater.

Shinigami -
Feels energized in houses and other buildings, or areas such as bridges and cliffs where someone has committed suicide. Will also pick up the lingering last thoughts of anyone who committed suicide within 10' of where he's standing - This only happens once per person. If picking up an object that has been used for a suicide attempt, successful or not, will experience the memories of the attempt through the eyes of whoever used it, starting from most recent memory, only happens the first time he touches unless used more than once and/or by multiple people, can avoid this by wearing gloves.

Weaknesses:
About 3/4 the strength of an average human male with his build.

Affected by weapons and magic that affect ghosts/undead spirits.
His brain cannot be healed with magic. Sensitive to emotion-affecting magic/auras and empathy - can't resist.

Needs to eat rice and tea, won't starve, but will experience crippling depression if going more than a couple days without.

Biography:
Hiuchi was born nearly 1600 years ago in Japan, the product of an odd relationship between a Greco-Roman goddess of ghosts and mental illness and a Japanese Shinigami. The demigod was an adult from birth, though he still needed some time to adjust to being alive. His first 10 years of life were spent in Japan, being raised by both parents as a family unit, among humans but never part of them. His parents both giving him a connection to ghosts, though it was mostly his father who taught him about helping them pass on.

After this, the family split, and Hiuchi travelled to Europe with his mother, though no longer living with her. He traveled predominantly in Greece, where he first came into contact with "modern" ideas of mental illness and began learning about and practicing medicine, later focussing on psychiatry. Sometime in the 1800s, he returned to Japan, regaining contact with his father. Even though psychiatry was still a relatively new idea, and there was always great stigma around mental illness in Japan, Hiuchi felt a great connection to its culture and remained until some 50 years ago.

At that point he again returned to Europe, where he met Euphoria's mother. They fell in love, though their personalities were quite different on the surface, and were eventually married. Then they moved to North America and settled in California. Although already a practicing psychiatrist, upon moving Hiuchi went back to school for clinical psychology, as that was more helpful in his continuing (secret) work with ghosts. He found work in that field, but then moved to Manta Carlos a few months after they had Euphoria.

The island offers a unique opportunity to provide counselling to the undead, though he will continue helping the living as well.

Resources: Lives in a small house with his wife and child. Works full time as a clinical psychologist. Has a decent amount of savings built up over 1500+ years of practicing medicine/psychiatry. Tends to spend wisely.
