Are you my uncle?

Phillip gazed as the world flew by him on his bus ride. It wasn't like he was sad; after all, he and his parents were somewhat distant. He smushed his face against the window and saw skyscrapers and buildings comprised almost entirely of glass.

"Woah... so cool!" Phillip exclaimed in awe. The world around him seemed so modern and strange compared to his old home. After spending hours with his face pressed against the window, he got bored. He sat staring into blank space until he realized that he had no means of paying his bus fare. Lucky for him, the bus driver kicked him out for accidentally setting the carpet on fire while he was scrounging for money.

Phillip walked the rest of the way, which luckily wasn't a very long distance. More and more buildings seemed to float past him. He noticed that the buildings became more and more...shady. Phillip quickened his pace but kept going. He finally stumbled upon a building that seemed unattended to. One of the lights in the building was flickering on and off. There were definitely ghosts in there, Phillip was sure of it. The address illegible to read, so he approached an elderly man on the bench. The man backed away from him a little bit, but that didn't stop Phillip.

"Hi! Is this the apartment complex?" Phillip asked.

"Oh, why, yes it is!" the man replied. He became more relaxed knowing that Phillip did not mean any harm because his eery appearance made it look like he was a typical resident.

"Thank you old man!" Phillip replied cheerfully, and flashed a crooked grin as he ran up the stairs. The door creaked as it opened and Phillip recklessly ran up the stairs to the third floor. The elevator was vacant, but Phillip thought that ghosts would fly out if he went inside. He finally arrived at his destination. Phillip took a deep breath and knocked on the second door to the elevator. @Ballerina

It was a typical Monday evening in the sense that he was a complete wreck in desperate need of caffeine. Garfield was right, Mondays really were the worst. This Monday in particular had been especially rough to a certain ginger. Juniper had only recently got confirmation that the niece that led him to the island again was indeed there in the least pleasant way possible. Seeing a missing flyer for the kid he had been raising for over ten years was haunting. He was a hot mess trying to figure out what he did wrong for this all to happen.

Juniper placed a large kettle onto the small, probably moldy, stovetop and turned it on. " Should be ready in five minutes, of course not as hot as me, but hot enough," he said to himself, still not used to living completely alone.

He heard a faint thumping noise against his door. While hesitant at first, he walked over to answer, hoping that it wasn't the police. Instead, there appeared to be a small boy through the peephole. The kid looked no older than ten with fiery devilish eyes, the kind of eyes that only two people in the world had.

" No... It couldn't be..." Juniper muttered in disbelief. He did not want to deal with a ghost of his past while something else was already haunting him, but the look in the kid's eyes told him that the boy wouldn't be leaving anytime soon.

" Good evening," He said politely, his usual sass absent. " What brings you here? If you are looking for a soul to take this is the wrong apartment."

A man--or was it a woman?--with long red hair stood blocking the door. Phillip didn't think this could be his uncle based on his appearance aside from the freckles.

"No, sir--er, ma'am...are you Juniper Vincent?" Phillip asked politely trying to walk inside the apartment.

Juniper's eyes widened in disgust, he most definitely was a man, but his long hair and manner of dressing probably said otherwise. While the kid was smiling, it was the creepy kind that gave Juniper the impression he probably shouldn't let the kid go past the door.

" Why of course! You've had to see me on TV at least once. Your parent have seen my late night show right?" He asked, even more offended than before. " If you know my name, you should know my fame as well~"

Juniper stuck out his arm to prevent the rascal from getting any further into his sacred apartment. " I would prefer if my living quarters weren't set ablaze, thank you~", he told the kid, a scowl forming on his face. " What brings you here anyways, do you want an autograph?"

Phillip gave a confused look to Juniper.
"Um...I don't think--OH! I know you! My parents turn the TV off whenever you come on television," he said trying to get further into the apartment, "And I'm not here to get an autograph. Actually, I'm your nephew, and I kind-of-sort-of burned down a barn, so now I'm living with you!"

He rolled his eyes, " of course they do." Juniper was not the least bit surprised, he had met his parents only once and even then they were put off by his flamboyance. To put it softly, they were not his favorite people in the world to begin with, if he wasn't paralyzed with shock he would have been celebrating that those bastards got what they deserved. Instead he stood completely still, like all his bodily functions were about to fail him. He was too famous for this to be the first time for someone hunting him down and claiming to be related, but unlike those times, the kid was right. There was only one nephew who had glowing red eyes and freckles like he did, though he could try to brush it off as a coincidence to get the kid to go away. Of course, that's not what his sister would want.

" Er--wonderful?" Juniper stuttered, opening up the entryway. " I'll try getting you a room at that school, er- Orion Academy? No-- Nightlight School? I don't know buddy but this place isn't too child friendly." He told the kid.

" You're Phillip, correct?"

"Yeah, I'm Alistair Phillip Smith, but I don't like the name Alistair, soooo I go by Phillip!" Phillip replied confidently, "and you must be...uhmmm....June's Hip Hurt!"

"D-don't take it personally, they just were afraid that you were going to influence me and I was going to take after your political opinions, but, uh," Phillip stuttered, "I'm a tweenager now and I'm strong enough to make my own decisions." He pulls his sleeve back and flexes, revealing a rather scrawny arm.

"I've heard of school before!" Phillip said, beaming with joy. His parents didn't respect the ideas of schools, ranting that they were 'cheap tactics to display propaganda' and taught 'unnecessary skillsets'. But Phillip was curious from glancing out of the window every morning seeing children his age going to school. His parents instead taught him what they believed to be the basics (with opinionated word problems, of course). With his undiagnosed dyslexia, he struggled even with that.
"I can't wait to get started!" Phillip exclaimed joyfully.

" Alistair..." He muttered, eyes trailing off for a moment before he quickly regained his composure, " well, I don't like that name either so it's lovely to meet you, Phillip."

" Political opinions, huh? Well I'll have you know that I'm not a good influence, but a perfect influence." Juniper informed him, flipping back a strand of long hair. " Perhaps you will be--almost as charismatic as moi one day, at the very least--you'll know how to make a better impression than this."

" For starters; you should know how to pronounce names, it's quite rude, Phil's Hip. It's Jun-ip-er, you'll get the hang of it soon enough." He said gesturing for Phillip to come in.

" I suppose you will have to stay here for the time being..." He groaned, the place was nowhere near suitable for a child. Mold scattered throughout the bathroom and the wallpaper was grimy, it was the price he payed for a ridiculously cheap apartment. It was not like he would be staying there long either, all he had to do was find his niece and hit the road again.

" No school for you bucko... at least for a few weeks," Juniper sighed, the missing person epidemic was getting out of hand, " your mother would kill me if I let you go missing too."
