When Regina learned that Jackal had been away on a month-long trip, she was distraught. At the time, that was almost as long as she had been alive! She would need to wait her entire lifetime, again, just to meet him.

She had been thinking about Jackal a lot, over the last month. What would he be like? Regina was sure he would be nice. He was the man responsible for saving her life, after all, and for killing Nasci before she could eat her. In her mind, that made him the closest thing she had to a father - a guardian, someone who had kept her safe, at least at one point. It was a tenuous connection, to be sure, but it was one of the only things Regina felt like she could cling to.

Today, she was finally going to meet him. She knew that he would be coming back today, so she was in the spaceport, holding a sign that said "JACKAL" on it in big letters. This was more to get his attention than to help him identify himself to her. Regina had seen enough pictures of him, and had spent enough time looking at those pictures, that she would recognize him immediately - but there were so many people in this place! it was so crowded and unfamiliar.

Luckily, he was tall. "Hi, Mr. Jackal!" She would start waving at him when she saw him.

Jackal was fucking happy to be off the ship. Not that the ship was bad--Thani had outfitted it with all the creature comforts--but it was cooped up for sure. He'd had Ralf, and he'd had people to talk to, but it had still been a month and a half and he'd watched through almost every piece of media he'd brought along.

He was happy to be off the ship, but he was looking forward to having real earth beneath his feet. The station wasn't enough. So he veeeeeeeeeery nearly cut right past Regina on his way towards the transport station down to Manta Carlos, only to abruptly notice the sign. And the waving.

Jackal slammed to a stop, squinting down at the absolutely tiny girl in front of him.

He didn't know her, right? He scraped the very reaches of his brain trying to remember. Trying to figure out who the hell this was. She obviously knew him, but who the hell was she?

The confusion probably showed on his face as the very, very tall man squinted down at the girl in front of him.

"Uh, hi?" Jackal finally managed, still searching his brain for any kind of recognition and coming up empty handed.

Regina was expecting him not to recognize her. The last time he saw her, she was one egg in a clutch of hundreds. So she came prepared for this.

"I'm Regina. You stopped my mom from killing and eating me a few months ago, and now I'm all grown up!" She grinned. "I've been waiting my whole life to meet you."

While she spoke, Regina folded up her sign, which was really just a large piece of paper, and she put it away in her bag. When she was done, she held out a hand. "Welcome home!"

Stopped her mom. Okay. That was a pretty short list, especially recently, and he was around Dalia enough to not be too surprised by the sudden, uh, aging up.

"All grown up," Jackal repeated, looking down at the very, very little girl.

She sure as hell didn't look fully grown.

But the offered hand was clear enough, and almost instinctively Jackal reached out, taking the hand and giving it a shake.

"So, uh, hi," Jackal said after a moment. What the hell was he supposed to say? She was just... staring up at him. What did she want.

Regina took his hand in both of hers, shaking it, and holding on to it for longer than she was probably supposed to.

"Saving my life is the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me. So I decided, I have to do something to repay you. I made you a cake for when you get home! And... do you want any help with your bags? I'm a lot stronger than I look." She looked up at him with breathless adoration, still holding his hand.

'The nicest thing anyone's ever done for me' sounded really nice until you realized that it was, for a period, literally the only thing anyone had ever done for her, and the bar was in fact being set very, very low.

"You really don't," Jackal said, attempting to extricate his hand from her grip without looking too much like he was trying to physically bolt. "I mean, I was just doing my job, so you don't have to worry about making me a cake or anything. I'm just happy knowing you kids didn't get eaten."

If only he knew.

"Uh, well..."

Damn. Regina didn't know where to start on that. She could probably save the heavy stuff for later, ideally after she'd gotten Jackal to like her. "I already made you the cake..." Regina said.

Finally recognizing that he was trying to leave, she let his hand go, but she would stay right next to him no matter where he went. Like she was glued to Jackal's side. "Besides. Even if it was just... a normal day for you, it was a big deal for me. So I have to show my appreciation."

Okay. Okay. He could do this. She was being weird, but... yeah, she was just a kid, right? She looked like fifteen or sixteen, tops. Maybe even younger. She was just a kid who was... apparently meeting her idol for the first time.

He could do this.

Jackal grinned at her with his too-sharp teeth.

"Sure," he said. "Cake is fine. I'm not going to turn down a cake if you've already made it."

Regina answered his grin with a toothy smile of her own. Sweet helms, he was so handsome when he smiled like that! And how she adored those little leggies on his tail.

There was a saying that the best way to a man's heart was through his stomach - and she was getting there! This is how it could start. Then she would really be safe from her siblings. She might even get him to kill Nasci again.

"You're going to love it. And from what I've heard, you're a big hero now after what you were doing, so you deserve it. The cake's just on the other side of the teleport back home."

He did, in fact, totally want to go home right then. He wanted to go home, drop his stuff, and fall face first into bed. But his apartment wasn't just his apartment. He shared it. And he wasn't going to just burst into his apartment unannounced with a kid on his tail.

Nope, that was a no-go.

"Do you, - okay, hold on," Jackal said, taking a moment to compose himself as he tried to figure out where to go. Not his place. Not Ralfs (that would be extra weird). Oh, that made sense.

"Well, I am pretty hungry," Jackal said, thinking on his feet. "Figured we could go grab food down at this place I know. Nice little breakfast place, serves all day breakfast. Go there a lot. That'd be a nice place to go right about now."
