"Not even a little?" Shay asked doubtfully. "I mean, I know there's Clement, but I don't think he counts. He's weird. Like I'm weird. He shouldn't have been able to happen, but there he is."
-
Shay was trailed off, then said in a small sort of voice, "I hate him for being a Lich. At least a little." Then her voice rose defensively. "It's not like he was born that way like me or you or Roa. He had to become what he was via murder, and God knows what else. It was a choice. Just because he regrets it now doesn't mean... – All those lives Angelo. If you could hear the way they cried, you might have him for that alone too."

Shay pulled back from the hug but held Angelo's arms as she searched his face, the emotions on her own were unfathomable but struck somewhere deep. She sniffed, then smiled strenuously.

"One kid would be good enough for me. Besides, you say that now, but I'm practically unbearable when I'm joking around with you.

"Actually, you must have some masochistic streak. What's wrong with you? I was ruining your life enough when I was some mod brat who kept fucking up, and now you move me in? Take me under your wing? You are working overtime for those good points, huh?"

She laughed without any humor and gave his arm a little, friendly pat.

"I know it might seem like I don't," Angelo said, "but I do believe people can change. I changed. If you'd met me when I was younger I'm not sure you'd have even recognized me. I was... a very different person back then, and I'm not going to hold it against a lich that they might have been a shitty, awful person. I'm going to hold it against Charlie that he's a shitty, awful person now, and that the island should have probably done something more rigorous then asking 'so, are you going to not murder everyone?' when they let him in."

Alright, maybe a bit too much (justified) anger, and Angelo did his best to reign it back in. It was easier when she started joking-not-joking about having kids and being a masochist, because it give him something that wasn't Charlie to think about and focus on.

"I grew up in a weird, shitty environment, and doing this lets me fix all the mistakes that people made raising me. Giving them a place to go back to. A safe place. Supporting their decisions, even if I don't agree with them. Stuff like that. I'm not saying it was all terrible, but it was... toxic, in a lot of ways."

"Got any stories?" Shay asked as she gave him more space. It was starting to feel weird. All of this. Everything. She imagined she felt like Angelo must have felt back when he was with that Angel. She was standing with this pillar of good, and she was just a tarnished spot on the soil.

"I mean, you've been here a long time, too. Like me..." Shay was quiet. She didn't want to say what she thought next because Angelo wasn't accepting this whole gun as his scythe thing easily.

Shay had always wanted a gun as her scythe. Or maybe cool duel daggers. But that hadn't happened. Not even close. "I like hearing about your old stories. I like hearing about you and your life... it's all weird here. We don't feel like we should be around each other at all. I never thought we'd be here. Can I hold the gun again?"

"I've got a mountain of stories," Angelo said. "But lots of them aren't good." Shay felt scattered to him, lost in thought over something he had no idea about. She was all over the place, seeking stories and being oddly sentimental in a way she often wasn't.

"You can hold the gun, if you want," Angelo said, gesturing towards the room. "But no more stories tonight. It's been a long day of work, and I've gotta go pick up Caelin from a friend's place."

Angelo paused for a long, long moment, staring at her.

"Are you sure you're alright?"

Shay took Angelo's gun and felt the weight of it settle in her hands again. She stared at it while he stared at her. Shay wanted to curl up, ask Angelo to sing something to her. She had never had someone sing something to her. God, how she missed being a kid sometimes.

Shay smiled unconvincingly at Angelo. "Yeah. I'm fine. I'll be here when you get back with Caelin. She'll probably like that..." Shay paused a second, holding the gun (after checking its safety was on) close to her chest.

"I'm just going to take that nap."
