Samuel had never before been in a position where he could just join a club.
He'd never had the time, money, or energy required in the past. Something had always conspired, one way or another, to get in his way. Either there was an entrance fee (not going to happen), or some kind of time commitment (similarly not going to happen). The one time he'd found a club that seemed plausible for him to join, he'd been so exhausted that he'd simply never found the time for it.
But Starlight Academy was different. He could eat what he wanted, when he wanted. He had a good bed and a room of his own, and no one was yelling next door loud enough to keep him up, if they yelled at all. It was practically a paradise, heaven on earth served up on an island shaped platter.
It was a bit too much, if Samuel was being honest with himself. He frequently found himself overwhelmed with how much there was to do, retreating back to his room to try and recover.
Which is why, after working up the nerve to go out and do something, Samuel found himself horribly disappointed. The poster in front of the room declared that yes, this was the meeting place for shapeshifters non-anonymous, and a smaller sticky note stuck on top clarified that there was no meeting that week due to the holidays.
He'd put all that effort in, and now he was getting nothing from it.
Samuel fidgeted in front of the door, glancing around nervously as he did. Maybe if he just waited, someone would show up. Maybe it wasn't cancelled at all, and all his effort hadn't gone to waste.
