Finding a quiet, isolated place wasn't as easy as it sounded. All Avian wanted was a quiet place in the courtyard to settle down and sketch a picture of a tropical screech owl she took several nights ago. But no, the grounds were crowded with chatty students who luckily didn't notice her, like people would overlook a ghost. She finally found a secluded patch of grass and plopped down in relief. Finally! Peace! Her blue striped sundress pooled around her as she slung her backpack in front of her and began rummaging around. Out came a sketchbook, a book stand, a tin of pencils, and a grey putty eraser. She placed the photograph of her little screech owl on the book stand and kept it in place with a paperweight. After finding the owl's basic sketch deep within the bird-filled sketchbook, she opened her tin of pencils and settled with the generic 6B pencil.
Avian adjusted her sun hat and began the owl's shading process, glancing back and forth between her work and the picture. It wasn't long before a canary fluttered down to her shoulder and watched her work. However, this was normal for Avian so she simply ignored the little bird, letting it watch her pencil strokes.

The book Ashiel had borrowed from the library was fully detailed and explained in easy terms how Weapon Manipulation can be developed. After all the time he spent poring over different books, he finally found something interesting. His fingers itched at his sides, already wanting to try some of the exercises out. There were over a thousand different exercises in the book he can try out. All he had to do was look for the one that was right for him.

He was so engrossed in his book that he hadn't realized he was walking straight at someone until it was too late. Ashiel stumbled over them, his eyes catching sight of some drawing tools, stripes, and a type of bird flying away. He rolled and came to a stop a few feet away, with his face on the ground and his ass in the air.

He stayed like that for awhile, not wanting to check if someone had seen the embarrassing moment, but when he heard no one laughing, he sat up and brushed himself off. Ashiel checked the other participant to that great fall and saw all of their scattered utensils and he hurriedly moved to collect them all, all the while muttering a mantra of "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Really, I am."

Avian had barely begun her work when someone tripped over her, knocking her onto her back and staring straight up at the sky. Obviously her little canary flew off which irritated her and obviously her peace was disturbed...which irritated her. She got up, scrambling for her sun, and jammed it back onto her head. She rarely took it off so putting it back on was a top priority. Then she looked at the tripper who was now desperately trying to make amends by picking up her pencils and apologizing profusely, much like she would in such a situation. She carefully watched him as he picked up the pencils, very puzzled by his odd appearance. It wasn't the bleached hair he had, as hers was just as snow white, but the odd attire and gaudy makeup job. He was clearly a freshman or at least an eight grader but even still his appearance was strange! Like she did most people she met, she simply eyed him curiously from under her sun hat like a scientist would eye a rare species.

After picking up all of the pencils and pens lying around, Ashiel looked up at the white-haired girl and quietly handed over everything in his hand. His eyes swept over her form as he tried to assess if he's ever seen her before but quickly came to the conclusion that no, he hasn't. She didn't look much, being as skinny as she was, but Ashiel would be able to remember someone with stark white hair and a huge floppy beach hat.

He wondered if he could use her for his army, and though her appearances may say otherwise, Ashiel gave it a shot.

"Are you a vampire?" he asked, the question coming out quite differently than what he had in mind. But he reasoned to himself that if he was going to ask her to join him, he should at least know if they'd be powerful enough. The hat and the white hair made him guess that this must be a vampire. Quite odd that they decided to stay out in the sun, but Ashiel's seen far worse.

Avian carefully took the pencils from the stranger, making sure as to keep her fingers from touching his like they would burn up at contact. She would have normally began packing up to escape the social situation and draw in a more secluded environment. But this one gazed at her the way she did others, with curiosity and peculiarity. She eyed him right back, cocking her head like sparrows do. Half way through her study of him, he dropped the bomb.
"Are you a vampire?"
Avian's jaw dropped open and she flinched back in shock.
"A-a-a w-what?!" she squeaked nervously.
At first she thought he was making fun of her but seeing the genuine wonder in his eyes made her think he was serious! He actually thought she could be a vampire!
"N-n-no!" she wailed, flailing her arms about, "W-where did th-that come from?!"

Ashiel's shoulders drooped in disappointment when she denied his assumptions of her being a vampire. Though there must be at least one vampire roaming around the island, Ashiel has yet to meet one. Considering their lore is spread throughout the whole world, vampires must truly be fearsome and powerful, just the type of soldier he needs in his army.

Gazing back at the girl, with an unconscious pout on his lips, Ashiel tried to explain himself. "Sorry for assuming you were one then." making sure to apologize first, seeing as that she seemed completely aghast at the idea of being a vampire.

"I just thought the white hair would be something vampire-like, and that the hat is used for keeping away the sun."

"Well...I'm not..." Avian mumbled.
She wondered if there even were vampires on campus but then again, this was Starlight Academy. All kinds of crazy people went there, including herself. Quickly gathering her art supplies and shoving them back into her backpack, she stood up and gave a little bow to the stranger.
"Uh...sorry for tripping...you," she said awkwardly, averting her eyes, "And for not being...vampire..."
As always, she'd avoid any social interaction, especially with people who openly guessed what race she was.

Ashiel waved his hand, "It's fine, it's fine." he said, "I'm the one who should apologize. You were doing nothing wrong. I was the one who wasn't looking where I was going."

He looked at her then, gazing at her and trying to assess what she was. She seemed a little strange, especially with the white hair and her whole ensemble to be quite honest. And Ashiel was trying to find out everything there was about this island and everyone who inhabits it. If she wasn't a vampire, the what was she?

"Um, if it's not rude to ask, if you aren't a vampire? Then what are you exactly?" he repeated his thought out loud while absent minded-ly playing with a pencil he seems to have forgotten to return.

Avian, used to being the one assessing the other, shifted uncomfortably under the stranger's gaze. Now she knew what it was like for others when she looked them up and down like an endangered bird. When he asked her what she was, if not vampiric, she jumped back again, shocked by the stupid question. If she didn't say, he'd probably assume she was half zombie or something.
"I'm a r-regular human girl!" she huffed, holding her sketchbook to her chest defensively, "W-w-what else would I be!?"
Avian was rarely put in situations where anyone got such a reaction out of her. This was one of the reasons she avoided human interaction. The strange thing was the more freaked out by this ...oddity, the more canaries began to gather in the trees behind her, giving off chirps and tunes.

Ashiel frowned in even more disappointment. So she wasn't anything but human. He didn't realize that the Academy accepted all kinds of creatures. He thought the school was set out for those who didn't necessarily fit in within the world of humanity.

"Shame," he managed to mutter, "I suppose there are some people that I would have to evacuate before I take control."

As he mulled over his thoughts, the sound of wings brought his attention back to the girl. His eyes widened at the sudden flock of birds that had gathered behind her. They seemed to be watching their interaction closely, cocking their heads to the side. Ashiel's gaze drifted off from the birds to the girl. So she wasn't normal after all?

"My name's Ashiel. You are?"
