An Early Morning Run

It was a Saturday, but Charlie was up at five anyway, noisily finishing with her unpacking before sidling off to the bathroom. Amazingly, her roommate had slept through her humming and drawer slamming, and she brushed her teeth with a vague air of disappointment. Although she'd only met her roommate yesterday, she absolutely hated the girl, and she was already trying to get her to request a room change. The girl had introduced herself as Mandy and immediately offered in a bright, sunny voice to give Charlie makeup tips. Every inch of wall space on her side of the room was plastered with posters of teen idols Charlie had never heard of, and garish magazines and tubes of lipstick littered the floor. Charlie had bared her teeth at Mandy in an evil smile and said she was quite alright, thank-you-very-much, mind already racing with ways to make the girl's life miserable. She made as much noise as possible as she dropped her toothbrush back at her room, zipped a green jacket over an off-white A-shirt, knotted a crimson hairband securely around her forehead, and slammed the door pointedly on her way out for good measure.

Her run took her through the courtyard and by the lake, zig-zagging through the quieter streets in town. She wasn't sure when her course changed to point towards the beach, but that was where she ended up an hour and a half later, panting heavily and swabbing ineffectively at the perspiration on her forehead with a bare forearm. Her jacket had ended up tied around her waist before she'd been running for twenty minutes, and the sweat dried refreshingly cool in the morning breeze. She shucked off scuffed trainers and dirty socks as soon as she'd caught her wind, digging her toes into the cool sand appreciatively. She'd never been to a proper beach before, although she'd been to the ocean a few times during the more affordable off-seasons. It had been all pointed rocks and freezing water, and although she'd spent hours climbing around the slippery, craggy boulders and marveling at dead things left stranded there by the tide, Charlie didn't consider it a real beach if the water was too cold to swim in and the coastline was covered in rocks instead of sand.

She dropped backwards on the sand, arms outstretched, knees bent, feet buried up to the ankles. She'd go for a swim, she decided. Running shorts were close enough to boardies for her, and there was no one around to comment or jeer if her shirt got wet. She could always wear her jacket if it wasn't dry by the time she headed back, anyway. She rubbed her closed eyes with thin fingers, yawning widely. The sun was beginning to warm the sand around her, and her long run had left her feeling lazy. She'd go for a swim eventually; right now she was content to lie on the beach and dry off.

Oh what an adventure this was, to explore the island all on his own! Daniel had done that most of the way, mainly he had walked around inside of the city and worked to learn to find his way around to the important places, like the movies and the candystore and of course the toys! Even if he was sure he would not get any toys it was nice to just look at the things inside and dream that some of them could be his and what he would do with them then! Yeah that was really nice to think about, but at the same time It made him sad to.

When the city was no longer fun the little boy had began to try and find some other nice place to have adventure on and then he found the perfect one, the beach of course! Daniel had spent time to watch the water of the sea as it moved in waves, he had never ever seen the sea close like this in his entier life, it was amazing and yet a little scary for someone was little as him, to think that the sea was so waste was hard to do and it made him a little nervous. The little boy followed the beach slowly and he stopped a little now and then as something captured his interest, it could be a bird flying across the sky, or that he noticed a small boat moving in the distance.

He did not really see Charlie when the woman was resting on the sand of the beach, well ne noticed her since he tripped over her legs and feel down on the sand with a little short scream followed by a sound with him against the sand. He closed his eyes as he landed right on the wounds he had, yeah Selia had taken care of them but it still hurt if one hit at the right spots. Daniel slowly sat up from his fall and placed one hand on his forehead as he tried to ignore the pain.

Charlie dropped an arm over her eyes, trying to shield them from the sun. She'd... Take a nap. For a few minutes. And then she'd take a quick swim, to wash away the sweat. And then she'd run back to the Academy and get sweaty again. Her thoughts trailed off, and she yawned again. But first - a nap.

She hadn't been asleep for more then a few minutes when a sharp pain in her leg and a piercing shriek jolted her awake. She jumped up, glancing around furiously for the cause of the two annoyances. "Okay, who the f-" She spotted the small boy huddled on the ground and cut herself off, rolling her eyes and crossing her arms. Sand clung to her skin, stuck in place by almost dry sweat, but she didn't care enough to brush it off. "What, do I look like a rock or something? Can't you look where you're going? What are you, five?" She half-yelled, half-taunted, eyes narrowing in annoyance. He was holding his forehead like he'd cracked his skull. Well, good. Maybe it'd teach him to look where he was going next time.

Daniel froze as he heard the voice and he slowly turned his eyes so that he looked up at the woman that was yelling at him, he looked at her and then he opened his mouth but no sound came, he closed his again and then he looked down onto the sand. "No you do not look like a rock" he said with a low voice, but he did not look up at her, he had learned to not keep eyecontact or people would hurt him.

"I`m sorry.." he then made a pause before he continued. "I´m not five, I´m six" he replied to her question, if he knew she taunted him he did not show that knowledge at all, most likely he was to small to understand taunting. He took a deep breath and then he glanced up at her again. "Your not going to hurt me or something are you? B-b-because I am sorry....s-so you do not have to hurt me...." even if he was more safe around himself, years of torture was nothing that easily dissappeared over night. Daniel still did not trust grown ups all to much and he was very careful around them. Charlie could see in his eyes that he had a mix of fear and confusion, the little boy had very emotional eyes so he was easy to read even for a person with not all that much knowledge in the subject.

She threw her arms up in exasperation, fixing the boy with an quizzical frown. "Are you mental? O' course I'm not gonna hit you! This might be hard to believe, but I'm not in the practice of hittin' preschoolers." He looked terrified, as if he was about to wet himself. You'd think someone as clumsy as he was would have gotten used to being yelled at by now. Or maybe she was just that frightening? Charlie wasn't one to bully five year olds, but the thought still brought a smile to her face.

"Anyway, why would I want to hit you? You've taken care of that well enough without my help, smacking your head like that. Serves you right, if you ask me." The boy was doing his best impression of a wounded puppy, fear and bewilderment shining in his eyes - as if he couldn't understand why she was annoyed. She shook her head irritably, dropping back down to the Charlie-shaped impression in the sand. "Alright, I'm done. Go cry to your mum about the scary lady, yeah?"

Mental? Daniel did not get what she said, what was she talking about? He continued to look at her for a moment and then he looked down at the sand for a moment and he began to write with his finger in the sand as he heard the womans voice when she talked. "I see, well then your better then my father....always a good thing" he said lowly before he began to stand up from the ground, as he did so she would be able to see parts of his body under the shirt, it was covered in bandadges, he was a little mummy under there, but he did not care and calmly brushed some sand of his pants.

Daniel then looked out at the sea for a moment and he watched it for another moment and then he turned back to the girl as she began to talk once more. "Well....because dad always told me that the only way to make me learn something was to beat it into me." his voice was very none emotional as he said this. He looked away again and then he shook his head. "No I will not go cry to my mom, that would only give me a beatup for being a whimp. Your not scary at all, there are much scarier things then you. Sorry.....I mean...." he sighed a little and moved the backpack a little on his back it was then that he noticed the little brown teddy that had fallen out when he feel and the boy quickly bent down and picked it up and held it close to himself for a few seconds before he place it back into the backpack again. After this he looked at the girl again for a moment. "I`m Daniel, what´s your name miss?"

She had thrown her arm over her eyes again, but when he began to tell her about his parents beating him she lifted it reluctantly and sat up. She disliked the boy immensely, hated his sniveling and cowering, but that wasn't something she could just ignore. "You tell everyone you meet how you're being beaten?" She couldn't resist asking nastily before sighing reluctantly and demanding: "How come you haven't called child services or run away or something? If you do run around whinging to everyone about it, how come no one else has for you? Go to the police or somethin', don't just sit around complaining." She dropped back to the ground, closing her eyes against the sunlight and promptly ignoring the boy again.

He didn't go away, though. There were a few minutes of silence, and then he piped up again, this time asking her name in his soft, childish squeak of a voice. She sighed pointedly, but answered: "I'm Charlie. Don't call me 'miss' again, or I might think twice about my 'no bullying five-year-olds' rule."

Daniel looked at her and thought of her words. "I already have ran away" was his simple reply to what she said. "and I do not go around telling everyone, I am honest, I tell the truth and you asked me why you would want to hit me so I told you the truth. Would you rather have wanted me to lie?" he continued to look at her and the boy did noot really understand why this woman was so....cold. Daniel was silent for a moment before he continued.

"If I offended you then I am sorry, I do not complain since my life is much better now then it ever was when I was home, I have someone who takes care of me now, and teaches me to read to." he nodded a little as he said this. "She even took care of all the wounds on my back, it hurt when she had to clean them but then the pain went away."

Daniel looked at her when she told her name and he took a steep backwards at her words of the bullying part she said. The boy nodded a little. "Okey, sorry about that then" he said. "...so are youa student on that school with people with special powers?" he was a little curious if she was a student.

"You don't have to lie, but you could try being a bit less straightforward. Puts people off, telling them all your deepest secrets before you even know their names." She shook her head, adding somewhat reluctantly, "good on you for getting out of there, though. Maybe your brain's not entirely empty, after all." She fixed him with a supercilious gaze, as if she doubted it.

"How wonderful," She intoned boredly, digging her toes back into the sand. "You've got a new mum. I'm so happy for you." She hadn't noticed his bandages - until a few minutes ago, she had been trying to go back to sleep - but now she eyed his torso with vague, lazy interest, as if she could see though the shirt to the wounds underneath. "Why don't cry to her, then," She tried hopefully, although she had a feeling it wouldn't work. He appeared to want to stick around.

"Why should I tell you?" She asked, sticking out her chin obstinately. "It's supposed to be secret, isn't it? Unless you've got a power of your own. Super-Clumsiness, maybe?" She teased, grinning evilly.

Daniel thought about her words and she was right about what she said, he should not have talked like that to a person he did not even know?! He nodded a little as he wanted to show he understod what she said. "Yeah I should not have said that, your right Charlie." he said to her calmly, then he was silent for a moment before he started to talk again, if her hard words hurt it did not seem to matter much to him as he did not show anything. "It was hard yeah, but I did it....and my brain is not empthy." those words his dad had said to about him not being a smart kid, but rather stupid and in any other way useless.

To what she said then he actually did smile and nodded. "Yeah she is really nice to me, thanks for being happy for me Charlie" he did not really notice if the girl was serious or just joked or something. "and she was really good at making the pain in my wounds go away, look here....not even the once that hurt when I moved hurts anymore...just stings a little when I run" as he talked he pulled up a piece of the shirt and showed her the bandaged under it. Then the boy frowned a little and examined her for a moment. "But why would I want to cry now? I mean I am not afraid of anything and I meet you Charlie, your cool" he smiled brightly at her when he said this. He did think that this girl was cool, there was something calm nonecaring about the way she talked and acted.

He then thought about what she said about the powers and the boy did blush a little and then he quickly had to think of something he could say to this. "I do not really know about that, I mean all people here have some power and they have the school to help learn to use the powers. But your right, you do not have to tell me what your power is." he shook his head a little to her question about his power. "No my power is not Super-Clumsiness"
