An Awkward Floating Head

Settling into life at Starlight Academy was fairly easy for Hunter. Due to his amnesia, he had no attachments that kept him rooted anywhere else in the world, so that was a plus. It also kinda helped that he had learned from records after his resurrection that he had no living relations, so that certainly made it easier to come to a island in the middle of nowhere.

However, Hunter had realized something after his first few days living in the dorms. While Hunter had control of when he turned intangible or invisible when he was awake, when he was unconscious...... not so much.

He first realized this when he got to class one day, just actually waking up then, and saw that his right arm had vanished from the visible spectrum. Suddenly the strange looks he got on the way into school that he barely noticed made a bit more sense, and he deduced that it must have happened while he was asleep. While this didn't bother him, he shrugged it off as quickly as he noticed it, he did think it would be awkward if more than a arm or leg appeared missing before he figured out how to get unconscious control of his powers.

... Unfortunately for him, on this morning, more than a arm or leg disappeared over night.

Now, Hunter made it a bad habit to not actually completely wake up until he sat down at a desk in the school building. So it was no surprise that he didn't notice immediately that only his head was visible. And so with that, the young ghost got ready for the day, his outfit vanishing as soon as it slipped onto his invisble body. And so, the now awkwardly floating head made his way through the dorms, his eyes half closed, unaware that others would more than likely react upon seeing a floating head muttering it's way through the student housing building.

The administration center was Paige's destination... at least it was about two hours ago. A chance encounter in her new home would occupy a portion of her time. It was shocking for her, to say the least, when she looked at the clock and the horrific realization that she was late to something on her very first day sank in. Needless to say, the redhead was throwing caution to the wind as she charged through the building; her mind was a jumbled pile of hasty excuses and passionate apologies to a principle that was surely pissed at her for a disgraceful lack of punctuality. What if she got kicked out for this? Then she'd have to head right back to witness protection for the rest of her life, if that dead-end road could even be considered a life...

Such thoughts made Paige even more terrified, to the point where she wasn't even sure which way led to an exit. The bemused stares and laughter of onlooking students wasn't helping her focus, or stay calm. Multiple times Paige thought to ask for directions, but her fear of ridicule kept her in a full sprint that was sure to lead her to some kind of exit... or so she kept telling herself. And then in an instant, she slammed into something, hard. In a split-second, Paige found herself on top of some... guy.

For the initial few seconds, they were face-to-face, and Paige couldn't stop herself thinking about how cute the guy looked. It was hard not to, what with her front row, high-def view of him. Gawd I am such a dork.. she thought as her cheeks reddened.

Paige opened her mouth, wanting to say something witty to alleviate the awkwardness, or maybe, just maybe, something classy, like an improvised pick up line. She could feel the words form, but her mind couldn't get a firm grasp on them. So instead of sounding funny or sophisticated, she just "uh"ed, breathing hot air right into his face.

Now possessed with the spontaneous urge to kill herself, Paige sputtered out choppy, mumbled apologies as she practically scrambled off of his... non-existent body. As she sat beside him, she finally realized that the cute boy was in fact a cute head. "Wha- What... Where...? Your... Your body..." She choked out, managing to make some of her speech comprehensible this time. The urge to scream was rising, as was the familiar feeling of lightheartedness that prophesied a blackout...

In his semi state of consciousness, Hunter began to somewhat notice that students were begin to point and give varied reactions of either laughing or just staring at him. Once again, thanks to his brain's slow processing speed after just having woken up and not gotten to class, he shrugged this off, once again thinking it was just another arm or leg gone missing.

He continued on, the way to the exit having been memorized, and the route easily accessible even by his slogging brain.

He was however unprepared for someone to ram into him head on. Time seemed to slow for Hunter as he began to topple backwards, and then his brain and the rest of reality began to work at normal speed as the surprise woke him up rather quickly, as he fell back onto the floor of the dormitory, his perception of time returning to normal speed. What just happened? He thought to himself, his eyes opening from halfway to wide open.

It was then he began to register that, as such from being practically ran over, there was someone on top of him. A female someone. His now very conscious brain began to examine his 'knocker over', and, from her cute appearance, he almost didn't mind. Orange hair, huh? Suits her- Wait, what am I saying? I just got knocked on the floor by this girl! Being the nice person I am, I still don't mind, but brain, you're getting a little ahead of yourself.

He began to sit up as the other student got up off of him, muttering short apologies, and he just waved them off. And then when he had gotten to lean upwards using his arms, he raised an eyebrow at the young woman. "What about my body? Oh, am I missing a arm or a leg again-?" While asking what she had meant, Hunter began to look down and saw that none of his body was at all visible. His eyes widened to that of surprised saucers, and his jaw dropped a little. "Now I see what you're talking about." He pulled out his music player, and using the screen as a mirror, saw that he was just a floating, talking head. "Oh wow, that is awkward as heck!"

Willing his body back into the visible spectrum, he saw as his outfit bled back into reality. And with that, Hunter sat up a bit more properly as his body came completely back into view, scratching the back of his head sheepishly. "Yeah, I'm sorry for scaring you like that. Y'see, I'm kinda a ghost, and for some reason, when I sleep at night, occasionally a body part or two will turn invisible and I won't notice until I completely wake up. So, if you hadn't ran into me, I wouldn't have noticed it till I got to class."

Paige just sat there, mouth agape, as this "ghost" grew a body out of thin air and then explained himself like he'd goofed up and got caught. She got to her feet and stared at the guy for a while before a thought crossed her mind: "Wait, you said you were a ghost? But... I smacked right into you. Ain't ghosts transparent and see-through or somethin'?" She asked, frowning at the idea that she was being played for a fool.

Yeah, 'course he'd probably do somethin' like that. The cute ones were always mean, she moped internally, and her eyes gradually focused on the wallpaper right past his head. This encounter was now officially awkward.

"Well... uh... I'm kind of... new here, and I've never seen a ghost before." She paused and considered the merits of letting this guy know her name, "P-Paige." If the worst came to pass, she could probably avoid him. "I'm real sorry about runnin' into you like that, I wasn't thinkin' straight." She said meekly, staring at the ground.

Hunter noticed the frown upon the girl's face. Clearly she was quite skeptical of his claim, and for good reason. People were raised up on the idea pf ghosts being see-through and intangible, so the idea of a flesh and blood ghost made about as much sense as a breathing rock. "That's all true, but for me, I'm flesh and blood and can become invisible and untouchable whenever I feel like it. Granted my powers go a bit weird when I'm asleep, but I have a grip on them when I'm conscious. I know it's hard to believe, people are raised up on ghost stories after all, so everyone kinda has a preconception of ghosts." Just to emphasize his point, he got on all fours and willed his hand to become intangible and phased it through the floor.

Sitting back up, Hunter continued his explanation, hoping to at least make her think he was telling the truth. "Y'see, I got hit by a car. Took me half an hour or so to bleed out in a ditch on the side of the road. Wake up sometime later, not a scratch on me. I also had no memory of my past except for my name and other basic stuff. I reported the incident to the authorities, and the situation got me put in touch with the school."

The situation was starting to become a little awkward.Well, more so awkward to be correct. It seemed like neither Hunter or the girl across from him were sure as to what to say to the other after that. Finally, after giving an explanation for her actions, and her name, he let out a sigh of relief. Maybe this could be brought back. "Hunter. And don't worry about it. Compared to getting hit by a car, that was nothing." Realizing what he had said, Hunter held up his hands in defense. "W-wait, that sounded a bit not like I wanted it to. What I'm trying to say is, no harm done and I understand what it's like cause I'm pretty new myself."

Groaning, practically facepalming, Hunter began to mutter audibly to himself. "Ugh! Why ya gotta be so awkward self? You try to have a conversation with the cute, nice girl who bumped into you, and then you just go all weird and talk like a moron! It's like you're trying to be a menace to yourself socially!... Maybe I should stop muttering out loud and stop referring to myself as 'you'."

It was true that Paige didn't have anything to say about the boy's story, and she could imagine quite a few people sharing her sentiment. Part of her wanted to think he was crazy and that his story was a load of bull, but the fact that she saw his powers first-hand was enough evidence to consider believing him. Still, the cynic in her kept the possibility of his story being some sort of trick at the forefront of her mind even if she wanted to trust him.

Trust issues aside, Paige was glad to be on good terms with the boy who had introduced himself as Hunter. He seemed like a nice guy so far, considering the circumstances of their encounter; and of course she didn't know what to say to him, she never knew how to talk to new people. Her eyes wandered to the floor, and her mind began to consider a short good-bye and a swift exit, since she probably wasn't going to see him again in a school so ginormous. Then Hunter was red in the face from something he said, and Paige blinked in surprise, not because she was offended, but because of his one-sided conversation with himself. He wasn't even halfway finished before Paige was laughing without really knowing why; she was just so taken aback by this unexpected behavior.

By the time Paige was done laughing, she assumed Hunter was already done talking. Wiping a few tears off her cheek, she looked Hunter right in the eye and grinned, "I'm- I'm sorry, just... I... ain't too good with talkin' to people, and seeing you just... go off like that? That was funny as hell, man." She said, not caring how odd SHE was making herself look for once, "I guess... I guess I'm tryin' to say that it was weird seeing someone else act... uhhh, weird. Yeah." She was back to looking at Hunter from the corner of her eye, and she scratched the back of her neck, her smile was slowly reverting to her default frown.

"So... how old are you?" Paige blurted out the question as soon as it crossed her mind, and for moment she regretted even asking it due to how random it was. "Just... curious, y'know? Was wonderin' if we'd be in any classes together, that kinda thing. Heh heh..." She explained with a few forced chuckles.

While breaking out of the pocket of his own little world of his self conversation, Hunter blinked a couple times in surprise at the reaction Paige was having to him. Normally, most people reacted with raised eyebrows, nervous glances away, or mutters whenever he realized he'd been caught talking to himself, but, much like the first person he had met at the school, she didn't react like he expected.

Once her laughter and explanation had subsided, the young man could agree with her. If one views one's actions as weird, it would be refreshing seeing someone else do it as well. "Well, I'm glad I made you laugh, even if I did look weird going off in the first place." He gave his acquaintance a thumbs up, hoping that by being friendly, other than the benefit of possibly gaining a friend, she'd start being less cynical of him. For some reason, people not believing him bugged him. "I'll chalk that up as being my good deed for the day."

Settling back down to the peace of non-laughter and non-muttering, Hunter half wasn't expecting a question so soon afterwards. He was half expecting another long, drawn-out silence of awkwardness. Maybe there was hope for a conversation after all. "I'm 16, and was born on October 31... Yes, I know a ghost born on Halloween sound cliche as hell, but I can't help it. Anyways, unless you're a sophomore, I don't think we'd be having many classes together."
