Personality Description:
Positive traits: Alana is a keen learner. She’s eager to study and achieve, academically, but she’s also eager to work out what she is and how to manage her powers. She wants the knowledge needed to act responsibly as a gifted person. Alana is creative. She’s an optimist.
Negative traits: She is very wary. Alana takes a while to let anyone in. Alana is also paranoid. She’s afraid of being hunted. She cannot cope with heat much and doesn’t like hot food or drinks. Lukewarm/tepid is fine but she won’t consume anything hotter than that. She can’t cope very well in hot weather and hates the summer. It’s manageable if she can be in cool water most of the time. Otherwise she’s grumpy, panicky and suffers from poor concentration.
Species Abilities:
Powers: Alana is a Wordmage. She can cast ‘words’ by writing a word or phrase. The magic is affected by language choice. For example, the French for ‘cold’ would vary the effect of a cold spell, compared to casting it with the English word for ‘cold’. For Alana, English words work best but they’re harder to cast and often fail. When she discovers or looks up words in other languages, the magic is more likely to succeed. She is still experimenting with her ability. She can only ‘feel’ the magic in simple words. So she knows ‘cold’ can help to cool her down (because she can ‘feel’ the magical possibility in the word), but cannot yet get that ‘word’ to work unless she uses ‘du froid’ or others. Experimenting with several languages is how she realised that language choice affects the strength and/or success of her ‘words’. She has tried different papers, inks and other kinds of writing materials, but they don’t seem to affect the magic. It has to be written on blank paper, as opposed to walls, or random objects etc. If the paper is not blank ‘words’ can fail completely or backfire (odd effects produced such as smoke, a foul smell, the paper catching fire, the page running like it’s drenched in water). The words Alana has mastered are: ‘swim’ (giving her flippered feet and gills) and ‘grow’ (accelerating growth of plant matter). She is somewhat proficient at ‘cold’ as well.
Biography: As a little girl, everything was fairly normal for Alana. Her parents split up when she was eleven, but it was amicable and she coped with it well. Through high school, she was increasingly edged out of her friendship group. She started acting weirdly midway through her first term as a freshman. She would go quiet for long periods of time and then come out with a random word. She never told her parents, but after some Googling, decided there was something wrong with her. Worried, scared and feeling unable to tell anyone, she withdrew into herself and purposefully kept away from people to save herself embarrassment. On her eighteenth birthday she cast her first ‘word’. She felt a strong sensation of needing to be in water, so she went swimming in a lake near her home. While there she had one of her quiet spells. The word that she came out with after was ‘swim’. That was when Alana realised she was something else. A letter from Starlight Academy was waiting for her when she got home from school a few months later, around about the time she could hold her first ‘word’ as long as she wanted with the desired affects at the right strength/intensity.
